New on SABC1 in December:

Usindiso (Redemption)
Premiere date:
Tuesday 4 December at 20h30

A 13-part drama series that tells the story of two young female singers - black and white - and their charismatic, enigmatic leader, Winston, using the backdrop of a gospel singing group and church in the inner city of Johannesburg.

Brenda is black, 20 something, feisty, a singer of the jazzy gospel school who used to lead the gospel group of the ambitious flawed dreamer and preacher, Winston. Enter Gabriella, a white, 17ish, Madonna faced rock chick with attitude and she turns the failing gospel group around. As the girls battle for gospel stardom, against the backdrop of music and small miracles in a church in the inner city, personal tensions inside and political tensions outside the church grow and threaten to tear the group apart.

Usindiso combines the sounds of gospel music, with a story about love, the conflict between private and public personas, failure, betrayal, redemption and rock and roll.

Counting The Booty (Documentary) - It's Okay To Be Gay
On:
Tuesday 4 December 2007 at 21h00

Two gay people in a long standing stable relationship would like to get married as they have adopted children across the colour line, and while the law is sometimes supportive, their loved ones and society are not always on their side.

We look at the context of the current South African Parliament that has recently passed the bill allowing the formalisation of gay civil unions. The South African constitution being one of the most progressive throughout the world discourages discrimination of any kind and South Africa is now only 1 of 5 international countries to recognise gay marriage rights.

We look at the dynamics of this family, their relationship with each other, with their own parents, with their adopted children, the relationship between the children, and the relationship with friends, colleagues, neighbours and their immediate circle. We cover issues of how rights protected by the constitution clash with issues of religion, marriage and parenthood within accepted stereotypes and accepted norms within society.

We look at this group of close friends, from different cultural backgrounds, while they go to college together, play sport together and socialize together. We then enter their homes and see how they interact with their parents, other friends and family. Is the point of departure for these friends - different careers, cross-cultural marriages and adopting other religions and the issue of raising children under a different set of rules? Are these “close” friends really close – are we forming a one race identity or is it a question of an emergent SA Identity?

Christmas Programmes:

Second Chance (Christmas Special)
On: 24 December at 21h00

This Christmas on SABC 1, SAFTA nominated Television Director/Producer Thokozani Nkosi presents Christopher “Gunman” Kubheka as Max,  a has-been “Gospel star” who’s making ends meet by playing guitar for donations at parking lots in and around Jozi’s Northern suburbs.

As a misguided youth, Max enters the Gospel music industry with a 1994 hit album “Thetha nam”, purely to make money, there is nothing Gospel about his lifestyle. Soon his fans catch on to his wayward ways and his star begins to dim. By year 2000 Max is a distant memory in the Gospel music arena. Out of frustration he drowns himself in booze and becomes a hopeless out-of-pocket alcoholic.

The problem, though, is not only that he drinks excessively, it is also that each time he gets drunk he gets aggressive and usually ends up being nabbed by the cops for one or other drunken misdemeanor. Having gotten on the wrong side of the law far too many times, Max is eventually sentenced to two weeks of community service.

He is to spend the next two weeks, preceding Christmas day, coaching a church choir in a nearby township. His challenge is that the goal of the choir is to win the annual Gospel Gold Christmas carol competition and he’s the man they are looking up to, to help them qualify and hopefully win.

As the story unfolds, this punishment turns out to be a blessing in disguise, as the journey he takes with the choir re-awakens his hopes and introduces him to the true meaning of “Gospel”. This becomes his Second Chance to put his life back together.

Also starring Lebo “Elle” Tisane (Muvhango), Sello Motloung (Jozi H), Nnekwa (Jam Alley), Tshepo Maseko (Isidingo) and special appearances by Rebecca Malope, Vuyo Mokoena and Fezile Makhanya (SABC 1 brand ambassador).
