A Boy Called Siya (Documentary)On: Tuesday, 6 January 2009 at 21h00
Duration: 1 hour
Siya Noveve is a bright-eyed, lively 13 year old boy with a gentle sense of humor. When Siya was 8, he was diagnosed with DMD - Ducheme Muscular Dystrophy - an X-chromosome linked degenerative disorder affecting all the muscles of the body. It is the most severe form of Muscular Dystrophy.
It is generally inherited by boys from their mothers who are not affected -occasionally women are affected in a milder, through a condition called "limp girdle" weakness. At present there is no cure and DMD is eventually fatal.
This documentary follows Siya's story as he faces a debilitating and ultimately, fatal, disorder. It also follows his mother, who wants to fight for her son, who wants to carry hope for him and wants the world to understand his situation.
It Happened To Me: Bipolar (Documentary)On: Tuesday, 13 January 2009 at 21h00
Duration: 1 hour
One moment they’re charming, interesting and full of life. The next thing, they go “mad”. They turn against you, shout and wail. You break off all ties with them. The truth is, these people are suffering either of the two most misunderstood mental illness: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or Bipolar Disorder (more commonly known as manic depression).
Both these diseases afflict at least one out of every 100 people in South Africa. Yet most people are unaware of their affliction and don’t get any treatment. This is especially true for the black communities of our country, for whom psychological and psychiatric services are most always unavailable or too expensive.
Through two main characters this documentary explores what exactly these disorders are and how they affect the daily lives of the sufferers and their loved ones.
*Please note: this documentary was originally scheduled to be on in December, under the title Cancer Of The Soul.
