Oscars Buzz 2013

Nominees for the 85th Academy Awards were announced in Tinseltown at the end of last week in the build-up to the ceremony coming up in February.

The list was revealed by entertainment multitasker Seth MacFarlane who'll be hosting the awards. He was joined by actress Emma Stone - who won't be hosting the ceremony with him. She's also been aptly excluded from the nominee list.

The three nominated films that blow our hair back most are:

Searching for Sugar Man - nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category and definitely deserves to win.

In case you haven't seen it, it's made by Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul and follows two South Africans in their search for their musical hero Rodriguez which sparks a revival of his music and career. It's currently available on DStv Box Office and on DVD.

Asad - a short film produced by Capetonian Rafiq Samsodien and directed by American Bryan Buckley. The flik was filmed in Paternoster and centres round a Somali boy struggling to survive his war-torn Somalia. Paternoster becomes Somalia. It's been nominated for Best Live Action Short Film.

Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained - nominated in five categories including Best Motion Picture and Best Screenplay.

Really? I thought Skyfall a bit overrated - not as exciting as Casino Royale and not as enjoyable as The Hobbit over this festive season. We haven't seen most of these films yet as South Africans so 'deserving' can only be decided once you have seen all of them.

No nomination for Leonardo DiCaprio, AGAIN! Why do the Oscars hate this guy?
