The second season of
So You Think You Can Dance SA reached the Finale countdown in last night's results show (13 October).
Six dancers remained at the start of it and by the end of the half-hour 23-year-old
Boipelo Maphafo and 20-year-old
Ashley Beyers were eliminated by the judges, after a signature gush (versus his usual chin-ring rant) by head judge
Harold van Buuren.
No matter how much you want to smack him, there's no denying that Harold knows how to take his time to build the sense of occasion and drama - which was important, considering all the moments where things seemed very rushed and unfocused. Was is just us or did you also feel that there was an overall atmosphere of: "Let's get this over with as quickly as possible"?
The show started with feedback to the remaining six contestants, host
Sade Giliberti announced that Boipelo and Ash; and
Shelley Christians and
Darren Hammond had been voted into the bottom two couples, leaving
Lulu Mlangeni and
Carl Davids safe.
Each of the danger zones had to dance for their lives, the judges deliberated; and Boipelo and Ash were eliminated - when it should have been Boipelo and Darren. Not only because of Ash's tattoos but also, as Harold said, Ash has been a strong live audience favourite, which is what the competition is all about.
This Saturday (16 October) each of the four go head-to-head, dancing for themselves only, in both in couples and solo. Votes will be for each of the four individually. The show starts half an hour early -
at 18h00 and
runs an hour-and-a-half.
In contrast to previous weeks where voting started at the end of the show, voting lines will open at the start and stay open for an hour. The dancers will perform for votes and one will win the title of Mzansi's Favourite Dancer - and R250 000 - in the last half hour.
Routines in the show include a pantsula choreographed by Lefty Mbenenge, a contemporary piece by Kelsey Middleton, a hip-hop number by Craig Johnson, and a rumba by Rafick Hoosain.
Starting next week, at 18h30: Relentless. A new local reality show in which people have to spontaneously accomplish difficult tasks to win cash. The set-up is that people are randomly approached while they're out and about, shopping, at sports stadiums etc.
They're asked if they want to win something and then given a spur of the moment, relentless challenge which they need to do successfully to win. No news yet on who'll be presenting, we'll keep you posted when we hear more.
