The ABC network has announced they will be pursuing a spin-off of the highly popular medical drama Grey's Anatomy.
The as-yet-untitled pilot will be headlined by one of the show's most popular characters: neonatal surgeon Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepherd, played by Kate Walsh.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes is currently working on a pilot, which will air as a special two-hour episode of Grey's.
Dr. Montgomery-Shepherd first appeared in the Season 1 finale, arriving outside the Seattle Grace Hospital looking for her estranged husband (Dr. McDreamy, played by Patrick Dempsey), and spotting him with his lover, Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).
She instantly confronted Meredith, asking her if she was the one sleeping with her husband. Fortunately for Meredith, she was saved from the nasty encounter by the end of the season.
Walsh was originally only scheduled to appear in a few episodes, but she made her character so instantly appealing she quickly became a regular cast member.
Now she's getting her very own series - if ABC like the pilot and decide to run with it.
According to reports Walsh will have to leave Grey's Anatomy, although that may not be a bad thing as she's fast running out of people to fight with.
It is not yet clear whether any of the other Grey's cast will be going with her.

| It could have been worse. A spin-off with Addison I can live with. |

On the one hand, yay Addison! I think she's underused on the show and I would totally love an Addison's Anatomy type show.
On the other hand, spinoffs are always iffy. The new cast might not have the acting chemistry the original GA lot have and the writing might not be up to scratch either. Is Shonda Rhimes producing? If not, then the show might suffer for not having her at the helm. If so, then the show and GA might suffer for her having to work on two shows at once.
I hope this show is successful and as enjoyable as original recipe Grey's.
I'm surprised they didn't go with the obvious and spin off a show about an underground fight club at Seattle Grace and centred around Burke, McDreamy and George ;-). |

| Addison's Anatomy? Are they going to work her out of Grey's? Reminds me of the dramatic twists and turns involved in explaining Worf's continued presence on Deep Space Nine. By the way, I think this is a really crappy idea. |
