On Motswako this Monday (15 March 2010):

The South African art scene has been hit by yet another controversy and this time it’s of international proportions. The Creative Workers’ Union of South Africa is lambasting international big budget movie companies for making South African period pieces that star American actors.

Most recently, the movie Invictus starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela has sparked an uproar, leaving South African actors feeling that there is not enough appreciation and acknowledgement for home-grown talent to fit the bill.

Motswako chats to Nakedi Ribane of the Creative Workers’ Union, as well as to Tumisho Masha, who has been in big budget movies such as Catch A Fire and Drum. Together with host Penny Lebyane they hash out the realities facing the South African film industry, as well as the effects on local actors.

Motswako is on SABC2 on Mondays at 21h30.
