In the season premiere: Dexter has reported Rita's death and the case is handed over to the FBI as the killing has all the earmarks of the Trinity killer.
Dexter is in something of a fog. He can't grieve and even delays telling the children of their mother's death until they return from the Keys with their grandparents.
