Episode 410
Something Nice Back Home

Considering the amount of eye-rolling I did during this episode, I’m surprised my eyes haven’t stuck to the back of my head. Seriously! I was so not impressed with the opening scenes of Jackass’s flash-forward.

So, let’s get the recap out of the way so we can get to the better parts of this episode.
The flash forward this week belongs to Jackass – who is happily living in the future with Kate and Aaron. But Jackass’s paranoia comes into play and he begins to suspect Kate of…. something. Eventually he insults her and leaves her crying with Aaron, effectively ending their relationship.

The cooler part of the flash forward was Jackass visiting Hurley at the mental hospital. Hurley has a message from Charlie for Jackass. He also tells Jackass that someone will be visiting him. Later, Jackass sees his supposedly dead father in his waiting room.

Back on the island, Jackass’s appendix needs to be removed. Juliet, along with Nurse Kate and Anesthetist Bernard operate on Jackass and remove the offending appendix. On a trip to the medical station to gather the needed medical instruments for the impromptu surgery, Jin discovers that Charlotte understands Korean. He threatens her and gets her to promise to take Sun with her off the island when they leave.

Meanwhile, Sawyer, Claire, Aaron and Miles are heading back to the beach. Miles, using his ghostbusting experience finds Danielle’s and Karl’s bodies in the jungle. Sawyer finds Miles’s constant ogling of Claire upsetting and has a word with him. The next morning, Sawyer awakes to find that Claire and Aaron have disappeared.

Miles informs him that she walked off in the middle of the night with someone she calls “Dad”. A frantic Sawyer finds Aaron, alone and abandoned in the jungle.

I suppose we should chat about Jackass’s flash forward first. There are several important points we can conclude from this episode.

• The first obvious point is that at some point after Kate’s trial, Kate and Jackass get together. Whatever Jackass’s issue with Aaron was, he’s worked through it and he wants to marry Kate and raise Aaron as his very own. Jackass also seems to know that Aaron is his nephew, telling Kate that she is not even related to Aaron. Or maybe he doesn’t, and that was just thrown in for effect.

It is not surprising that these two end up together – it’s been waiting to happen ever these two first meet. What is surprising is the speedy and thorough way in which Jackass ends the relationship. I don’t doubt that he loves Kate, but he completely alienates her.

Is this because he believes Hurley’s message from Charlie? Or is this because Jackass is beginning a course of very self-destructive behaviour? This is the start of Jackass’s decent into the alcoholic, bearded suicidal nutter we saw on the Season 3 finale.

• Hurley’s message to Jackass. Well actually, it’s Charlie’s message. “You’re not supposed to raise him Jack” is what Charlie says to Jackass. Hurley also informs Jackass that he’d be getting a visitor soon too. Even though Jackass thinks that this is just a part of Hurley’s craziness, deep down he wonders.

This also ties in nicely with what Claire’s physic tells her – that Aaron should not be raised by another – or “an other” depending on how you look at it. So, is Jackass an Other, or does it just mean that Aaron should not be raised by anyone but Claire? And why isn’t Kate having any ghostly visitations if she has custody of Aaron??

Is Charlie’s ghost still linked to the island? One would assume so, and right
now we have no other option but to believe that Charlie’s ghost is not only keeping Hurley company, but he is also linked to the island somehow.

Sigh. I miss Charlie, dammit! I know this is so totally off topic, but I miss him. I miss his presence on the show; I miss what he brought to Lost.

• Jin discovering that Charlotte understands Korean was pretty cool. It’s amazing how much I’ve grown to like Jin. I never cared much for him during season one, but somehow, since then, I’ve grown very fond of him. Anyway, Jin uses his previous thuggish ways to threaten Charlotte.

This is important for several reasons. The first is that Charlotte has promised to take Sun back with her when she leaves the island. Whether she really intends living up to her promise is another thing though. And whether she would put Daniel’s life in jeopardy remains to be seen.

Daniel is so cute the way he acts around her, but I wonder about his and Charlotte’s motives for offering help. I like Daniel, and would like to believe that he intends helping but right now I am unsure of his reasons.

• Is anyone else surprised that Keamy and his men are still alive? Did the monster let them get away on Benry’s orders or did it have a moment of compassion? I doubt it. Benry wanted them dead, I am sure, after they so coldly killed his daughter. And the monster has killed before. So why didn’t it kill them this time??

• Where is Claire?? I just cannot see Claire willingly going anywhere with Christian Shepard. And just when did she start calling Christian “dad”? The last time (that we saw) she didn’t want anything to do with him. And now she’s calling him dad and following him into the jungle.

Apart from her willingly following Christian, Claire would never leave Aaron. I just can’t believe she would leave him in the middle of the jungle unattended. So, where is Claire?? And why was Miles looking at her so oddly? We know Miles is good at his Ghostbusting job… so… is it Charlie that Miles detects? Christian? Jacob? Ethan?? Where is Claire? And if Miles saw her leave in the middle of the night, why didn’t he stop her? The “restraining order” imposed by Sawyer wouldn’t have stopped him.

• I’ve saved the most interesting one for last – Christian Shepard. What is this man’s story? Is he dead? We’ve seen him around the island, we’ve seen him in Jackass’s flash forwards, and we’ve seen him in Jacob’s hut. And now we have seen his holding Aaron. If he’s dead, how can he hold Aaron?!?

Argh! So many questions. I really don’t have a theory about Christian. The fact is that I just don’t know what to think. Do you have any theories?!?! Any? At all??

Some minor points for consideration are:

• Jackass says that Sawyer choose to stay behind on the island. If so, why did only 5 of them choose to leave? Jin staying behind without Sun and Claire staying behind without Aaron. I have trouble believing that Jin or Claire would choose to remain behind without Sun/Aaron. I would prefer to believe that they did not have a choice, because the only other option is that they are dead, and I don’t want them to be dead.

• Daniel has feelings for Charlotte. Sweet!

• Both Miles and Daniel declare that they did not sign up to kill people on the island. Miles and Frank Lapidus have helped the Losties out on occasion. Daniel seems to want to help them, but like I’ve stated earlier, I’m still unsure of his and Charlotte’s motives.

• How cute is Sawyer these days!! I love how protective he is over Claire and Aaron. It’s like he’s a completely different person. I can so easily see him assume the leadership role on the island once Jackass leaves.

•  Jackass's illness could be more than just an appendix.  Rose mentions that on this island, people are cured.  Benry also got ill instead of better.  Does this mean that the island is not happy with Jackass??

Jackass’s flashes or most of them anyway, have usually bored me to tears. Jackass, for various reasons, infuriates me. He is such a control freak that he actually wants to be in control of his own damned surgery. But I feel sorry for him. More and more I am realizing that Jackass is just as lost as everyone else.
I also wanted to mention Juliet and what she does for Kate at the end of the episode. Poor Juliet. She deserves better than Jack anyway. I really like Juliet, and I wouldn’t want her killed or harmed.

I have mixed feelings about this episode. Half the time I was exasperated, and the other half I was highly entertained. Still, I’d like a lot less Jackass-Kate next time and more Christian Shepard!

What we have learnt:

• Jackass and Kate get together after Kate’s trial, but their relationship doesn’t last very long.
• Hurley is in a bad way at the mental hospital, now refusing to take his medication
• Jackass sees his dead father once he leaves the island
• Keamy and his men survived the monster attack

New Questions

• Where is Claire?
• Why did Keamy and his men survive the monster attack?
• Does Jackass believe that Charlie visits Hurley?
• Just what/who is Christian Shepard???

Interesting Trivia (from this site)

• When Jack see's his Dad in the seating area late at night, it can be seen that he is wearing white sneakers instead of shoes.

• The toy Jack trips over at the beginning of the episode is a replica of the Millenium Falcon (Han Solo´s ship from Star Wars IV-VI)

• The book that Jack is reading to Aaron is Alice in Wonderland. It’s the latest of several references to Lewis Carroll on the show, including the titles for a number of episodes (”White Rabbit” and “Through the Looking Glass”).

The passage that Jack reads is as follows : “I wonder if I’ve been changed in the night? Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I’m not the same, the next question is ‘Who in the world am I?’ Ah, that’s the great puzzle!”

• A nurse shows jack X-rays of someone's L4 vertebra. Ben's tumor was on his L4 vertebra.

So many questions!!!  But I think I can answer one: Claire calls Christian "Dad" because she doesn't even know his real name (I think...I know she doesn't know his last name, I'm not sure about the first name).

There's a very interesting Claire theory that's going around, but I'm not gonna mention it yet...I'm gonna see if someone else comes up with it.  :)

As for Christian--and Charlie--we've seen both of them do physical things (Charlie slapping Hurley) even though they're dead and supposedly "ghosts".  Are they really just manisfestations of the Smoke Monster?  Maybe that allows them to do physical things.  (Notice that when Christian appears, a SMOKE detector goes off in the hospital!)

As for the Smoke Monster, I think we're just supposed to assume that Keamy's men escaped it somehow.  (It's not invulnerable--Locke escaped its grasp with dynamite.)  After all, if Keamy and his men died then and there, the plot would have come to a complete halt.  It's a shame though, because it makes Smokey (and the last episode) a lot less awesome in retrospect. :(

Very good point Lingo!
Would also love to hear your theory, but I'll wait :)

RE Christian = Smoke Monster.  That's so interesting!!!!

Hi guys, I dont usually post comments (love reading the blog) but something has been bothering me for quite some time now.

My question:  Do you guys think Jack's father is really dead?

In the finale of Season 3 during his druken rage in the hospital Jack says to one of the doctors something like "you find my father and if he's drunker than I am....".  He was talking about his dad in the present tense.  I know that this could all be part of his hallucination and ofcourse being drunk as well.  But do you think there is a slight possibility that he is alive?  My suspicion has increased ever since Claire saw Christian in this episode.

Plus I'm dying to know who was in that darn coffin!!!  I hope they will reveal it this season.

Thanks Six for an awesome blog - I read it every week!

Hi Sgirl.  Thank you for the comments; it's much appreciated.

The question you pose re Christian Shepard is vitally important.  I am not sure what to think of him at all.  There are times when I think he's alive and times when I just know he's dead.  They've written it very well.

We've discussed Christian quite a bit on the forums.  Feel free to pop by :)

Great recap again.

I think that Christian is dead, but because his body landed on the island, it became part of the mystisism (spelling is bad) of the island.  Or maybe it is just the moster?!?

I'll post the Claire stuff in the forum episode thread.

So much for my kidney transplant theory.

I am however even more convinced that Claire is dying. She seems to have some head/brain trauma from the explosion. I don't suppose the writers feel the need to keep her around after killing off the hobbit.

I believe Christian is dead, there is a long list of dead people that have appeared to the living and in some cases influenced there paths. Anna Lucia, Ben's mother, Charlie, possibly the dude in the slippers that Hurley sees(not sure if he is dead though)

Coop, please have a peek at the forums and the thread for this episode.  Lingo posted his Claire theory and it is mind-blowing; and if it turns out to be true... then WOW!

>>I don't suppose the writers feel the need to keep her around after killing off the hobbit.<<
Which really pisses me off.  They ought to have just killed her instead of my Charlie.
