Episode 409
The Shape of Things to Come

So, what’s up with Jackass? I’m serious; what’s up with the guy? Kidney trouble? I’m surprised that we haven’t had a Jackass Flash as yet. We’re 9 episodes into the season and no Jack-flash. Weird … and we’ve usually had about 10 or 15 by now. But I’m not complaining!! I can wait.

I know… I know… after everything that happened, how can I even wonder why there hasn’t been a Jack-Flash as yet… I guess it’s easier wondering about Jack than … Alex!!! Oh, my God!!! Alex! They killed Alex. Oh my God! They killed her!! Just like that! Oh, frak! Alex!

Nothing in this episode surprised me more than that. I just can’t believe that they would so cold-bloodedly murder Alex. I really, really believed that they would strike some kind of deal, or that someone would kill Kimmy before he killed Alex. Wow.

Anyway, before I get ahead of myself, let’s get the recap out of the way first. The story picks up where episode left – with Widmore’s men capturing Alex. They march Alex to Lockeville where she deactivates the sonic fence which in turn sets off “an alarm” in the camp.

Benry tells Locke that he needs to stick with him as they would not kill Locke as long as he is with Benry. Widmore’s men send in Miles with a radio to negotiate, and Kimmy tries using Alex as a pawn. Benry, believing that they would not harm Alex tries talking his way out of it. But they murder Alex, right in front of Benry’s eyes.

That’s when Benry gets mad and somehow summons the monster to help him out. While ole Smokey is busy killing Widmore’s men, Benry sends the losties into the jungle while he takes a moment to say goodbye to his daughter.

When he rejoins the losties, everyone is all for heading back to the beach, but Locke and Benry need Hurley to take them to Jacob’s cabin. Sawyer and Claire (with Aaron) head off for the beach with Hurley’s promise to join them soon.

On the beach, the other losties find a body washed ashore. They learn from Daniel that it’s the ship’s doctor. Daniel eventually sets up a crude system where he is able to send a message via Morse code to the ship. He tells the losties that everything is fine and that the helicopter will arrive for them the next day. Bernard (who knows a thing or two about Morse code) reveals his lie. Daniel is forced to admit that they were never going to help the losties off the island.

Oh, yes. The flash this week belonged to that evil sneak Benry. It’s a flash-forward and reveals some interesting things. Namely how he recruited Sayid and I think most importantly, the extent of his “relationship” with Charles Widmore.

Key Points are :

• The relationship between Benry and Charles Widmore goes further than any of us ever realized. He blames Widmore for Alex’s death, and intends finding Penny and killing her in retribution. Widmore doesn’t seem at all phased though, telling Benry that he’ll never find her.

I don’t know how to put this all into words; mostly because I know that we are on the cusp of an important revelation here, and that we tether on that fine line between when we know nothing and when we know it all. All I know is that this standing “arrangement” between Widmore and Benry is important.

Benry utters the words “He changed the rules” when Alex was so cold-bloodedly murdered. Who changed the rules? Who made the rules in the first place? “He” could refer to Widmore, or it could refer to Jacob. Initially, I assumed he meant Widmore because he now holds Widmore responsible for Alex’s death. But it could also mean that since he can’t hold Jacob responsible, or that he can’t physically harm Jacob, Widmore’s his proxy.

Also, Widmore claims that whatever Benry got, he took from Widmore. And he further states that the island is his and always was. Interesting.

• Alex’s death. Oh, My God! I just cannot get over it. Yes, Benry should not have allowed it to get to that point. For heaven sakes, it’s his daughter! His daughter!! But I feel for him, I do. The look on his face when it happened was just crazy heart-breaking. An Emmy moment there for sure! Give the man his award, he deserves it!

Shame man. I didn’t ever think I could feel sorry for Benry, but I did. He clearly didn’t believe that they would actually kill her, but he should not have taken the chance either.

Rest in Peace Alex.

• Benry summoning the Monster. Holy Smokes!!!! Did he summon it or did he turn it on? How did it know where to go and who to attack? So many questions. But whatever. He got the thing to come in and do his bidding!!! And Benry, that miserable frakker. I believed him when he told Locke in an earlier episode that he didn’t know what the monster was.

Hmmm. Maybe he’s not lying. Maybe he doesn’t know what it is, but merely knows how to control it/summon it? But that does this mean that he is behind the Pilot’s death and Eko’s death as well? Or does the monster have some sort of free reign??

• How did Benry end up in the Sarah Dessert wearing a Dharma jacket? And why doesn’t he know the date? Is Benry jumping/time traveling?? What was cool though, was seeing him pull off that Super-Sayid move on those two Arabs. Impressive!

• Speaking of Super-Sayid (who looked very dapper in his black suit), we finally get to see how he gets roped in to working for Benry. I don’t want to say “Sucker” but seriously, Benry set that one up so well. He further demonstrates how good he is at manipulating people. He is the master.

And Sayid … poor, broken-hearted Sayid falls for it. He has been so well manipulated that to him it seems that though he suggests working for Benry. Sayid, it seems, can’t get away from his ghosts. He’s such a tortured soul. I worry about Sayid.

• A minorish point is that both Benry and Locke realize that Hurley is the one to lead them to Jacob’s hut. I can’t wait to see this scene. Is Hurley the key here?

• Doctor Ray washing up dead on the beach. Ooh. We didn’t see that happen. Who killed him? And why? And why is Daniel lying about the Morse code? Ok, stupid question. But now he’s been forced to admit that they were never there to rescue the losties. Also a very interesting thing was Daniel saying that time was relative (or something like that). What does Daniel know and isn’t telling us. Oh, ok. Again. Stupid question!

• My question at the beginning of the article. What’s up with Jackass?? I guess we’ll find out soon. I’m betting next episode. What if the Morse code that Daniel received (about the Doctor being okay) refers to Jackass and not Dr Ray??

• I think that Sawyer has been written into Lost for two very important reasons. Ok, there are more reasons than just two, but these are my two important reasons. The first is the eye-candy value, naturally. And secondly, have you noticed how he asks the questions we wish somebody would. Like “What you do that for?” and “Who the hell is Nikki?” and “How’d you get here?” and “Where do you think you’re going?”.

And speaking of Sawyer, when did he stop being Mr Selfish-Loner-BadBoy and become Mr Concerned-for-all? How adorable was he yesterday… calling Claire “sweetheart” and vowing to kill Locke if he “harmed a hair on Hurley’s curly head”. Adorable!!!!!

Waiting three weeks for this episode was so worth it. Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather we didn’t have to wait, but this was one of the most intense, insane episodes with mad monsters, bullets flying all over the place, people dying, Morse Code, exploding cottages and supposed time travel. What more could one ask for?!?!?

New Questions this week

• What is the nature of the relationship / arrangement between Charles Widmore and Benry?
• Who changed the rules? What are the rules? Who made the rules?
• How did Ben summon Smokey? What is Smokey?
• How did Benry get into the middle of the Sarah Dessert?
• Where is Penny hiding?
• What’s wrong with Jackass?

Answers to questions received this week

• We know how Benry recruited Sayid, but here, I am positive there’s more to the story.
• We know who killed Danielle and now Alex.
• Jackass and co find out the truth about their rescue.

Interesting Trivia (from this site)

• Ben appears in the Tunisian desert wearing a Dharma parka with the name Halliwax on it. This was the name used by familiar Dharma orientation film host aka; Marvin Candle/Mark Wickmund in the Orchid Station orientation film, originally shown at Comic-con 2007. The film features Halliwax referring to the station's secret and dangerous nature, as he holds one bunny labeled 15; another appears behind him, causing him to panic. Something else drops from above, as the Dr. warns not to let the two touch. Tunisia is where Charlotte found a Polar Bear skeleton wearing a Dharma Hydra collar in Confirmed Dead.

• In the desert when Ben killed the 2 men, the AK-47 he used was clearly in the "safe" position. He would've needed to move it up into the "fire" position to actually use the weapon.

• While playing Risk, Hurley says "Australia's the key to the whole game." Flight Oceanic 815 departed from Sydney, Australia.

• In Charles Widmore's room, next to his bed, we can see the painting of the "Black Rock", which he bought on episode 4.05 - The Constant.
• This episode flashes forward to October 24th, 2005. 13 months after Oceanic 815 crashed on the island.

• Dean Moriarty: When Ben checks into the Tunisian hotel he uses this alias. Dean Moriarty is the name of the free-wheeling, free spirited friend of Jack Kerouac's narrator, Sal Paradise, in Kerouac's classic novel On the Road. The character is a based on the author's real-life friend Neal Cassady.

• "The Shape of Things to Come" is a book written by H.G. Wells.

To borrow a phrase from you six, frakking hell!
Awesome episode.  Awesome roller coaster ride.

also can't believe that alex was murdered so coldly.  Didn't expect that one.

The scenes with the monster had me practically off my seat!  My son loves the monster and he ran around whopping.  But he's only 12 :)
All the questions that this now presents.  wow.  incredible.

this show just gets better.

this episode rates a 10/10 for me.

Yum, Sarah Dessert.  I gotta know, is it pie, cake, or ice cream?  ;)

I just loved the way Widmore talked to Ben.  "Don't look at me with those horrible little eyes of yours."  Hee!  There was a whole LOT of mysterious subtext in that conversation.  Ben says he "can't" kill Widmore: why??  Widmore says that the island is his, and always was--does that mean he controlled DHARMA?  Considering his men on his boat just found the island, how will he lose it again?  When he says to Ben, "I know WHO you are, WHAT you are," what does he mean??  And Ben says Widmore will "be sorry for changing the rules," so I think that answers that question.

What an excellent way to get lost back on track.

The title of the episode is spooky. Like it belongs just after a 3 week break and I get the feeling its a message to the viewers that the episodes that follow will be different and as alarming as this one was.

One other thing, we have a possible answer to Claire not leaving the island. That blast could not have left her unscathed and everybody looked surprised that she is even walking. My theory is she dies of internal injuries and obviously Jack is the one trying to save her, hence his guilt in the future. Perhaps he even takes her kidney for a transplant to himself.

>>Yum, Sarah Dessert. I gotta know, is it pie, cake, or ice cream? ;)<<
Arghhhh!!!!  my spelling sucks!!!
*pulls out hair in frustration, has a tantrum, goes on a rampage and drinks everyone's coffee and eats everyone's sandwiches*

Ermm, it's chocolate pudding ;)
It's been well established that my spelling is pathetic... even with damned spell-checker.  :)

Hey Coop.  I love your theory about Jack taking Claire's kidney. LOL
