Episode 318
D.O.C

You know all those theories you have in your head? The ones you’ve been lovingly nurturing since Season one? And the one’s you’ve picked up along the way? Ja, well… here’s what you need to do… throw them all away. The writers are clearly determined to keep us as confused as possible.

In last night’s excellent episode, we learn who the father of Sun’s baby is. I was so convinced that the child would be Jae-Lee’s, but it turns out that Jin is the daddy after all. That’s good news for the awesome, kung-foo fighting Jin. But it’s not that good news for Sun.

According to Juliet, women who fall pregnant on the island don’t make it past their second trimester. Sun figures that she has two months to live. I feel really bad for Sun. She wanted this child to be Jin’s so much…

You know, I really find Jin’s and Sun’s relationship so interesting.

What’s so interesting is seeing how this relationship has developed, and I am not just talking about their relationship on the island. All the time, I’ve been thinking that Jin is the mean culprit behind their initial unhappiness, but it turns out that Sun herself is the one responsible for Jin working for her father.

So, let me see if I have this right… Sun, in order to protect Jin’s honour, borrows money from her father to pay off Jin’s biological mother – who is a prostitute. Mr Paik correctly guesses that the money has something to do with Jin and remarks that Jin will now be working for him. Sun accepts the deal. And Jin doesn’t even know anything about it!!! So then Sun spends her time feeling neglected and unloved and then has an affair! Jin isn’t quite the nasty guy I thought he was!

I’m quite disappointed in Sun. I really, really like Sun. Of all the women on the island, I think that she’s the most likeable and just the nicest. Maybe I liked her better when I thought that she’s a strong woman despite that she had been a ‘victim’. Doesn’t work so well when you stop and think and realise that she really has never been a ‘victim’.

What I do like, however, is her attitude towards both Jackass and Juliet. First, I am glad that she wasn’t having any of Jackass’s… interrogation. I think that while Jack is not working with the Others, his relationship with Juliet is clouding his judgement. And Juliet…. Juliet herself is such an enigma.

How is it possible that I can feel so uneasy about a person and feel so sorry for them in the same breath? While she and Sun where in the hatch, every fibre of my being was screaming out for Sun not to trust Juliet, and yet… at the end when Juliet tells Benry that she hates him... I feel for her. But I still don’t trust her. I cannot wait to see how this all plays out. And I can’t wait to see how she’s going to get a “sample” from Kate. Ha.

Anyway, on the other side of the island, Desmond and company run into yet another unexpected visitor – Mikhail. Mikhail is supposed to be dead!!! The look on all their faces pretty much reflected just what everyone else was felling – shock! Mikhail alive!!! Unbelievable!! Didn’t we see him die an unpleasant death in “Par Avion”?

But here is the thing. As hard as I try to remember, did anyone actually check his pulse? I remember Kate shimming up that pole and squatting next to him… Help me out here… did anyone actually check that he really was dead? Or did they (like us) just assume he was dead??

Well, in any case, the now undead Mikhail helps Desmond and co patch parachute-woman up. Parachute woman is not much help and keeps mumbling in all types of languages except English. She saves her English for the best part of the episode – when she reveals to Hurley that they (the outside world) found the plane of Oceanic flight 815 and that there were no survivors!

Whoa!!!!! This could mean so many things. It could mean firstly that they found the wreckage of some of the plane and no survivors. Or it could mean that I’ve completely lost the plot here and that all these people are dead, trapped on an island from which they are trying to escape. Whatever the case may be, I am now more sure than ever that the losties will not leave this island alive.

For some reason, Michael and Walt keep popping up in my head whenever I think about parachute woman’s words about finding the plane. If Michael and Walt followed Benry’s directions, they ought to have found some civilization by now… surely!!!

I am in awe of this damned show. It doesn’t take much to impress me, and right now I’m so impressed I could die.

Still no Locke though! Show yourself Locke… you got some explaining to do!

Other little snippets I found interesting:

• Jin being the child of a prostitute and someone in his father’s village. We are not sure if Mr Kwon is really Jin’s biological father. I wonder if this is going to be a future storyline??
• Jin’s sudden kung-foo fighting skills!! I told you that it doesn’t take much to impress me, and nothing impresses me like a bit of kung-foo on the side!
• Hurley’s “call” home. Awww.

What we learnt this week

• Jin is the father of Sun’s baby
• They fell pregnant on the island
• Juliet is there, under Benry’s orders, to collect ‘samples’ from all the women at camp
• Mikhail is still very much alive
• The outside world believes that everyone on Flight 815 is dead

Interesting Trivia

• After Mikhail is done treating Naomi's wound, she says in Portuguese "Eu não estou só" which means "I am not alone", not "Thank you" as Mikhail translates.
