S.O.S

Episode 19
S.O.S

I’ve always thought of Rose, and then Bernard, as scenery. I guess because Rose has been in and out of both seasons and we have never seen anything that even hinted at her back-story. So, I was surprised that they have finally decided to move her from out of the “scenery” category into the “mainstream” lot.

This was actually the lowest rated episode of Lost yet, but I thought it was … interesting, in a way. We learnt quite a bit about Rose and Bernard. Rose and Bernard meet when Rose’s car gets stuck in snow, and he helps her get it out.

They go for coffee, start dating and before we know it, Bernard’s on one knee asking Rose to marry him. Only thing, Rose hesitates, and then drops the bombshell – She’s dying. She has cancer and it’s in remission and at most has a year to live.

Bernard still wants to marry her and marry her he does. They go off to Australia on their honeymoon, but Bernard has ulterior motives … he wants Rose to visit a faith-healer. Rose agrees for Bernard’s sake… the faith- healer is unable to help her, but she tells Bernard that she’s been cured.

On the island, Bernard decides that everyone’s too complacent. He’s decided that everyone’s just accepted things, and he is going to do something about it. He gets Hurley to round up Libby, Jin, Sun and some other losties… Jim and Frozo and some other nameless extras. He tries to rally them together to build a massive S.O.S on the beach.

Rose wants to know if this has been run past Jack. Bernard's a little surprised. You need to check with Jack to get permission to build a giant SOS sign? Bernard tries to joke about it  "He's not the president; he's a doctor”  Rose yells out that Bernard's a dentist, which causes some snickering. She tells Bernard (away from the others, although that didn’t stop them eavesdropping) that he’s giving them false hope.

Bernard is hurt, but trudges along. Slowly, but ever so surely, his task force starts lessening, until he’s all out on his lonesome, placing lava rocks on the beach. Finally Rose, approaches him and tells him that the faith-healer didn’t cure her, but she’s sure the island did. They embrace. Ahh. Happy days.

Ok, did I say that it was interesting? I meant that it was interesting in a boring way. But regardless, Bernard does have a point… people have become comfortable living on the island. As Hurley pointed out “Dude, we built a raft…it was blown up” Faced with monsters, Others and Dharma, I would have tried something drastic like Bernard did.

So, now to the more interesting and less boring part of the episode.

At the hatch, Ana-Lucia is reading something, and Jack breezes in to chat to Fake Henry. Ana-Lucia is now a part of the Jack Corporation and Jack needs her to stay to keep an eye on Locke... so she stay she does.

Locke is down in the hatch too (kindof obsessed, isn’t he??) trying to recall the map. He’s not making any progress and is steadily getting more frustrated. Jack has to even prod him into entering the numbers. Finally questioning things, Locke?

Some time later Locke goes to speak to Fake Henry, but the door stays shut when there’s no gun around. He hollers at Fake Henry through the door “Did you enter the numbers??” Was he really expecting Fake Henry to answer? Inside the armory, Fake Henry says nothing, but a great smile lights up his pale, beaten up face.

Locke leaves the hatch and goes to his sea-gazing spot where he encounters Rose. After chatting to her for a while, and after realising she knows his secret, he returns to the hatch where he attacks his map drawing task with gusto. Poor Locke. I wish I could just e-mail him the map.

Meanwhile, Jack goes to change Fake Henry’s bandages. Fake Henry doesn’t look at him or talk to him but grunts in pain when Jack changes the dressing. He tells Fake Henry that he’s going to cross the line. Ooooohhh. Big Brave Jack. He tells Fake Henry that he’s going to swap him for Walt, which causes Henry to finally respond “They’re never going to give you Walt” Geez. Even I could have told you that Jack, so I really don’t know why you look so stunned!!

So, he goes off and enlists Kate’s help instead. He and Kate trundle off into the jungle. Kate finds a doll and picks it up. Sadly, it didn’t blow up in her face like I wanted, but she and Jack get caught in one of Danielle’s traps.

And this scene goes on for about a hundred years, with Jack struggling to reach the gun, which fortunately he tucked into his waistband above his backside, only he can't reach it, so Kate grabs it, taking great pains not to shoot off his ass. And they bicker about who's going to try to shoot the rope that's holding them up, with Kate taking the first shot and missing. So Jack wants to try, and of course the doctor is a great shot, and the net comes crashing down in such a way that Kate winds up on top of Jack.

Oh Puh-leeze!!! Get a room already!!!!!!

As they continue on the great Trek, Jack asks what Kate meant when she said the Others were sophisticated, and she fills him in on her excursion with Claire where they went into the jungle and found another hatch. She explains about the lockers, with the ratty clothes and the makeup kit and fake beard. Jack wants to know when she was going to tell him this. Kate says "When you decided to let me back in the club"

So, after what seems like an eternity, they reach the clearing. Jack starts shouting out to the trees that he's back, and he's got their man, and if they want him back they're going to have to come on out. Kate tries to get him to calm down, but he's too busy yelling at grass. "I know you're out there! I know you can hear me!" and so forth. "Jack, they're not here," says Kate, but Jack keeps yelling about how he'll be right there… blah blah blah

So, now its night, and Jack and Kate are huddled by a fire. Kate apologises to Jack for kissing him, but he says he’s not sorry. Why am I not surprised? They hear a sound in the bush and see someone running towards them with a torch. Thinking it’s the Others they get to their feet, mentally preparing themselves.

The person runs right up to them and falls flat on his face; they roll him over and are shocked to discover that it's a practically unconscious Michael. Finally!! I was wondering if we were ever going to see Michael again!!

Well, truthfully, it was a boring episode. But the two good things to come out of it was Fake Henry’s creepy smile and Michael. Last week I said I wonder if we could trust Fake Henry. The man has a plan far more complex than I realised. I’m changing my mind about his plan and whether he expected Sayid to dig up that grave.

I just hope next week’s episode is more exciting.
