Episode 16
The Whole Truth

After the brilliantness of last week’s episode, I feel vaguely bereft. What the heck was this drivel that we witnessed last night? After waxing lyrical about the excellent writing on this show, I was really let down yesterday.

The one complaint that I have about this show, is that every now and again, they put in an entirely bland episode. Luckily, however, last night’s episode was saved from being the most boring Lost episode ever by that wonderfully, weasely Henry Gale, and the going ons in the hatch.

We witnessed another flashback of Sun’s further illustrating why she ought to have left Jin. Sun and Jin have been trying to fall pregnant for a year. Jin is especially desperate for a baby as he believes that by presenting his father-in-law with a grandchild, his father-in-law would look on him more kindly. Perhaps he would then be promoted from Henchman to Honcho.

He suggests that they go see a doctor. Meanwhile, Sun has been meeting secretly with Jae-Lee (he of the matchmaker saga) for English lessons. Sun and Jin go see a fertility doctor who tells them that Sun cannot have children. Jin gets all upset and confronts her. She says (in one of the two best lines of the episode) “I wanted to trap the son of a fisherman” Ouch. That had to hurt.

Sun confides in Jae-Lee that she wants to move to America. He advises her not to run away from her problems, and that running away will solve nothing. Later, Sun is waylaid by the distraught fertility doctor, who tells her that he lied – the problem is not with her but with Jin. He was just too scared to tell Jin the truth.

Meanwhile, back on the island, Sun and Jin have a bit of a spat when Jin insists that Sun not work in her garden alone. She races off and is stumbled apon by Rose and Bernard who are bickering. Do married people on this island never stop bickering?? They offer her water and tell her she ought to talk to Jack.

Instead, she approaches Sawyer – who is wearing his geeky glasses. Is it possible that a man can look so hot and so geeky at the same time?? In any case, she gets a home pregnancy test from him and goes off to find her confidante Kate, who helps her bear the agonizing wait – all of 2 minutes.

The test confirms it – Sun’s gonna be a mommy. They speak to Jack, and he says that these tests are pretty reliable, and congratulates her on the baby.

Jin meanwhile, is fishing. He sees Bernard and tries to give him advice about his netting technique, but Bernard explains that he is looking for oysters, when Sawyer walks up and congratulates Jin. But Jin couldn’t understand a word.

It was actually quite cool they way they did that whole bit, with us not being able to understand what Sawyer and Bernard were saying…giving us a hint of what Jin was experiencing. What would have been cooler, though, is if they had Korean subtitles (ala Austin Powers style) for Jin.

Jin goes back to Sun’s garden and tries to rectify his little hissy fit by replanting the plants he pulled out. Sun find him there and tells him that she’s pregnant. Jin is ecstatic, but then Sun tells him what the fertility doctor said. Sun assured him that he was the only man she’d ever been with. Jin accepts her word and tells her that it is then a miracle.

But I’m wondering if it really is his baby. For some reason, I don’t believe Sun. Maybe I am so desperate to spice up an otherwise dull flashback, but there was a lot of sexual tension between Sun and Jae-Lee. I don’t believe that the whole truth is out in the open.

Meanwhile, Locke approaches Ana-Lucia for help on the Henry Gale situation. He wants her to interrogate Henry Gale, and after he locks Ana-Lucia in with Henry Gale, he tells Jack about it. Jack listens in at the door, he can’t hear anything.

Jack says, "How do you know he hasn't snapped her neck, John?" Locke responds with, "How do you know she hasn't snapped his?" Oh, touché! Inside the hatch, Ana-Lucia is chatting, quite amicably, with Henry Gale.

She tells him about how she threw Nathan into the pit. At this point, Henry Gale is probably wondering if everyone who comes into his “cell” is going to bore him with tales from the past. She gets him to draw her a map to where his balloon is supposedly located. When Ana-Lucia steps out of Henry’s “cell”, she doesn’t mention the map to either Locke or Jack.

Instead, she approaches Sayid, and wishes to speak to him alone – as he is with Charlie at the moment. But Sayid and Charlie are now chums, and Ana-Lucia is forced to reveal her info in front of Charlie. She reveals the map etc etc, and when asked why she didn’t mention this to Locke and Jack, she says that “Locke and Jack are too busy worrying about Locke and Jack” (my other choice for best line of the episode).

So sets off our party of 3 to track down the balloon. Ana-Lucia notices that Charlie has a gun. No, Charlie, she wasn’t looking at your bum – that would’ve been me! Charlie hands the gun over to Sayid. I am really enjoying this smug interaction between Charlie and Sayid. Charlie’s got a bit of attitude now... and I kinda like it!

Later that night, after they’ve made camp and Charlie is dreaming of fame, Ana-Lucia apologises to Sayid about shooting Shannon. Sayid says that Ana-Lucia didn’t kill Shannon, it was the Others. Ermm… I’m pretty sure I saw Ana-Lucia pull the trigger.

So, in the morning they reach the clearing where the balloon’s supposed to be. Surprise, surprise! It’s not there. They head off in different directions to search “thoroughly”.

Back at the hatch, Henry Gale is invited to breakfast by Jack. Locke and Jack seem to be determined to outdo each other by seeing what they can do without informing the other. Grow up, boys! Because Henry Gale is no idiot, he knows what he’s doing and I’m sure he snickers quietly to himself and rubs his hands with glee as he realises how easy it is to manipulate the both of them!!

Henry Gale gets quite chatty – telling them that this is probably his reward for drawing Ana-Lucia the map. Jack and Locke are both “huh??? Map, what map!??” "To my balloon," says Henry, and Locke and Jack look at each other to confirm that the other doesn't know anything about it. Henry acts surprised. "Wow, you guys have some real trust issues, don't you?" he says.

Oh Henry, you sly goat. He then goes on with one of the best soliloquies I’ve heard in this show.

"Of course, if I was one of them -- these people that you seem to think are your enemies -- what would I do?" Wait, don't answer. He'll tell you. Jack and Locke stare at him, transfixed. "Well, there'd be no balloon, so I'd draw a map to a real secluded place like a cave or some underbrush -- good place for a trap, an ambush." Jack and Locke exchange alarmed glances. "And when your friends go there, a bunch of my people would be waiting for them. Then they'd use them to trade for me." "I guess it's a good thing I'm not one of them, huh?"

I guess the episode was not as boring as I originally thought afterall!
