Episode 13
The Long Con

So, I am going to do something I’ve never done before – I’m going to agree with Kate. And No, I’ve not been kidnapped and swapped with evil aliens, nor have I been brainwashed. I have to agree with Kate, Sawyer wants people to hate him.

“I’m not a good person” he tells Charlie. I find it very interesting the way he’s chosen to phrase that sentence. It’s not “Don’t trust me” or “Don’t mess with me” etc, it’s “I’m not a good person” Who says something like that?? The amateur shrink in me reckons that Sawyer just doesn’t like himself.

He wants people to hate him because he probably hates himself. It doesn’t excuse his behaviour, however. I really like Sawyer, but it seems that all my favourites are determined to make themselves as unlikable as possible.

When I saw the preview for this episode and saw that there was a botched kidnapping involving Sun, for some reason I just knew that Charlie was involved. What is going on with the boy? Alienating himself is clearly not enough. If word of this gets out (and I am sure it will), he’ll have a lynch mob after him.

In Sawyer’s Flashback we learn how Sawyer tried to con a woman out of six hundred thousand dollars, only to fall for her. After his partner threatens both his and her life, Sawyer urges her to take the money and run.

He even goes as far as stuffing the money in a bag and leading her out of the back door. He tells her that he loves her. Later, he returns to the house for the money. She was the long con after all.

Anyway… Jack is placing all the weapons in the armory, where he sees Charlie’s Virgin Mary statues. Locke tells him that he ought to lock up the medication as well. He hints that Sawyer has been helping himself to the medication. So Jack heads for the beach.

Sawyer returns from a dip in the ocean to find Jack rummaging in his little shack. He and Jack have a face off over ownership of the meds. Sawyer claims it's a case of "Finders Keepers." And that's just fine with Jack. He just found them in Sawyer's tent, and now he's keeping them. Ooh. If looks could kill, Jack would be sprawled dead on the beach.

Later while Ana-Lucia tries to weasel the combination for the armory out of Jack, Sawyer and Kate are bonding. He spoils it though, when he tells her about the army that Jack and Ana-Lucia are trying to get together. Kate doesn't know what he's talking about, and is even more confused when Sawyer asks if she doesn't know about their little army. "Guess I'm not the only one on the outs with the doc," says Sawyer, satisfied.

Sun, meanwhile, is working in her garden when she’s interrupted by movement in the bushes. It’s Vincent (By the way – who’s looking after Vincent now? Michael’s gone after Walt and poor ole Shannon’s dead). Suddenly someone jams a bag over her head, binds her wrists, and drags her away while she screams and fights back.

Sawyer and Kate hear her screams and run off into the jungle. They find Sun, hurt and unconscious, lying on the ground. Kate checks for a pulse, discovers she's breathing, and Sawyer yells for her to go get Jack. He actually has to say it a couple of times, like, Thanks for your help, Kate.

They bring her back to camp where Ana Lucia leads everyone to arrive at the only possible conclusion. The Others are back…Ana Lucia wants to go after them. But Locke argues for caution, at least until Sun wakes up and is able to tell them exactly what happened.

But Sawyer and Kate are not happy and decide to do a little investigation of their own. They find a black piece of cloth that was used on the attack on Sun. Sawyer is a master of this game, and it’s not before long that he leads Kate to believe that Ana-Lucia is behind the attack.

Kate immediately runs of to find Jack and interrogate him about Ana-Lucia. Jack stoically refuses to answer but also does a bit of interrogating of Ana-Lucia later. She seems incredulous that anyone could ever suspect her. Yeah, Ana… Kill anyone recently?

Meanwhile, Sun wakes up but is unable to tell them who attacked her. Jin gets all agitated and eventually sums up in one word “Gun”. While the great debate over the guns is happening, Sawyer and Kate are catching up on the latest events, when the thing happens that makes me almost giddy with glee.

The look between Kate and Ana-Lucia. So it begins. And about time too.

Kate convinces Sawyer to go to Locke and tell him that Jack’s about to open the armory – breaking the agreement they made earlier. Sawyer updates him and Locke decides to move the guns. Hhmmm…. Since when did you start trusting Sawyer, Locke??

Later, Jack arrives to find that Locke’s emptied out the armory. He goes storming off to find Locke. He finds Locke on the beach and demands to be taken to the new hiding place, but Locke doesn't want to take him there. In the end, it turns out he won't have to.

Whatever happened to Sawyer’s adage of “Finder’s, keepers”??? Sawyer turns up and fires a shot into the air. He goes on about how his things were stolen while he way away. His beer, his shaving cream etc etc. But, what the hell, they can keep the shaving cream and batteries. But if anyone on this island needs a gun? They need to come to Sawyer.

Later, Kate confronts him. "You run, I con. Tiger don't change their stripes," he says. Kate just stares at him, looking hurt, for a long while, before getting up and walking away. And even later, he meets up with his co-conspirator – Charlie. Charlie was responsible for the attack on Sun. He asks that Sawyer never reveal it was him. Since when did everyone start trusting Sawyer?!?!?!!

In other Island news, Hurley tries to cheer Sayid up by giving him the short wave radio that Bernard had. Sayid doesn’t seem interested, but later, approaches Hurley with what seems an antennae, wires and the radio. They try tuning the radio and pick up what seems to be a radio station playing music. “Maybe it’s from another time” says Hurley. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
