The hunting party

Episode 11 – The Hunting Party

What is it about Jack that grates on my nerves? I find him infuriating, demanding and just bloody annoying. Of all the survivors, I think that his back story is the most boring. Yes, I even find Kate’s story intriguing, but during Jack’s flashbacks, I find myself tempted to go channel hopping.

He is a control freak of the worst kind, and becomes highly irrational when under pressure. We see it in his flashbacks, and we see it on the island. His constant need to always be right and always be the good guy often overwhelms what could be a very wonderful guy beneath.

In last night’s episode, Jack operated on a man who most doctors had written off. I doubt he would have operated on had Gabriella (the man’s daughter) not sweet talked him so. Jack spends most of the next weeks doing tests and neglecting his wife.

He eventually operates and the patient dies. Gabriella meets him in the car park where she thanks him, and kisses him passionately. He breaks away and goes home where Sarah informs him that she has met someone else and is leaving him. “You always need to be fixing something” she tells him.

That’s the first great truth that been said to Jack this episode. Jack is always looking to be fixing something – that’s because he’s broken himself. We still don’t know what his full story is and I doubt we ever will, but something in this guy needs to be fixed.

Back on the island, a clearly frantic and out-of-control Michael knocks Locke out and locks him and Jack in the armory. Michael states that he needs to find his son and he needs to do it alone. Kate and Sawyer let them out and Jack immediately states that he’s going after Michael. Sawyer decides to go along.

mikegun

Kate, as usual, wants to tag along, but Jack refuses to allow it. While tracking Michael, Jack is irritable because Sawyer is around, and quite frankly, acts like a juvenile. Get over it Jack! For an intelligent man, he treats Sawyer very childishly, making snide remarks and snubbing him.

The second great truth of the episode is Locke telling Jack “Who are we to tell anyone what they can and cannot do” Bravo Locke! I knew I liked you for a reason. Jack gets very dictatorial. I understand his need to keep everyone safe, but always assuming he knows what’s best is not always the route to go.

Anyway, they hear gunshot and race towards it. See, that’s where the problems on this island start – they run towards danger!! The find casings from Michael’s gun. It’s getting dark but Jack insists they forge ahead. Eventually it’s quite dark out and an argument breaks out between Locke and Jack.

Locke wants to go back saying that Michael will not return without Walt. Jack insists (again) that they continue. Suddenly they are interrupted by another person who sides with Locke. He says that they should return. It’s the same guy who shot Sawyer on the raft!

Finally!! We get to see interaction with the Others! He tells them they should go back to where they came from and when Sawyer makes a move, a shot is fired and Sawyer’s ear is grazed with a bullet. Jack demands to know where Michael is and what happened to Walt. The man tells him that Walt is fine and that Michael will never find them. He goes on to tell them that their curiosity is going to get them killed and orders Jack, Locke and Sawyer to give up their weapons and turn around - this is Their island and the only reason our survivors are living on it is because They allow it.

Wow! Actually very true. Our survivors are the outsiders on this island. They (the Others) broke up the tailies survivors so easily that I am sure that they have staked out our original survivors from the very beginning.

Jack calls his bluff, telling him that he’s sure that they are in the majority and that “Zeke” (as Sawyer calls him) is probably alone. “Zeke” calls out and immediately about 20 or so torches light up, surrounding Jack, Locke and Sawyer. Zeke is obviously not alone. He again states that they should turn around and go back. Locke tries to talk some sense to Jack but Jack is adamant that they will not go without Michael.

Zeke brings out his trump card – a bound and gagged Kate (who took it upon herself to follow them). Zeke states that if they do not turn around he will be forced to shoot her in front of them. After a brief stand-off Jack relents. They are released and they head back to their camp.

On the journey home, Kate tries apologising, but Jack gives her the cold shoulder and brushes her off. Kate’s quite upset, as she should be. Eventually Sawyer tells her that he would have done exactly the same thing had Jack told him that he couldn’t tag along too.

Jack seeks Ana-Lucia and asks her if she can help him train an army. Very interesting option Jack. I think he’s realised just how dangerous the Others are. Apart from being physically superior, and knowing the island exceptionally well, they are also intelligent. Makes them all the more dangerous.

Kate following the guys is just so typical. She wants to be in the middle of everything! But, while saying that I wonder what would have happened had the Others not found Kate. Jack would not have backed down and I’m sure it would’ve resulted in the deaths of Jack, Locke and Sawyer.

Jack is just a contradiction. On the one hand, I don’t deny that he does do a good job of leader for the group - despite his unreasonableness sometimes. On the other, he’s like a little kid the way he’s treating both Sawyer and Kate. I hold no love for Kate, but seriously, Jack is being very childish.

In other island news, Hurley has a crush on Libby. Awww. How cute. He and Charlie contemplate their love lives over music that neither of them knows. Later Charlie sees Locke playing with Aaron and is quite torn up.

Sun finally asserts herself and refuses to allow Jin to do a Kate and follow Jack & co. Jin later tells her that he doesn’t like to be told what to do and she replies that for the past 4 years, she was told what to do and she didn’t like it either. You go girl!
