Episode 7 – The other 48 Days

This latest offering offered us a peak into what happened to the survivors of the crash from the tail section of the plane. Quite frankly, I’ve been sitting here for a couple of hours staring into the artwork of my 7 year old niece, trying to figure out just how to write this recap.

I’m lost for words. Not because the episode was so brilliant, totally shocking us into silence and all that, but because I found this particular episode to be a bit bland. For some reason, I was expecting it to be a bit more dramatic, which is what I said to a friend a few minutes ago. Although, I suppose, it was dramatic. What these people have had to endure is quite intense. Our original survivors have had some tense situations, but nothing quite like this.

It was good, but I couldn’t quite feel all what I know I should be feeling for those tailies.  What my friend reckons is that we have not had an opportunity to emotionally bond with the tailies, hence my proclamation that this was a bit bland.

I guess she’s right in a way. If we look at Ana-Lucia, she is quite aggressive, and I remember stating that I don’t like her very much. But if we look at what they have endured, then it’s completely understandable why she is so aggressive. I even felt a twinge of sympathy for her.

We have had an entire season to get to know the original cast of survivors, and just a few episodes to get to know these tailies. And I know I have been quite harsh with Ana-Lucia. I’m not prepared to change my opinion of her just yet though.

Anyway, the show starts with a piece of the tailgate crashing into the ocean. Ana-Lucia emerges from the water and swims to shore. A little boy with a teddy bear (aha!) is crying for his sister, who is floating in the water. Mr Eko pulls her out and Ana-Lucia performs CPR on the little girl.

She promises the girl that she will re-unite her with her mother. All around Ana-Lucia, there is chaos, and people screaming, reminiscent of the pilot episode of season 1. A clinical psychologist helps a man with his broken leg.

Suddenly, a man (Goodwin) runs out of the jungle screaming for help. Ana-Lucia rushes forward to help, and assists Bernard, who is still in his seat, which is now precariously perched on a tree. Goodwin, who claims to have been in the Peace Corps, builds a fire and Bernard enquires about his wife Rose.

That night, 3 of the survivors are taken while everyone was asleep. Mr Eko kills two of the Others with a rock when they try taking him. From that moment, he does not speak. The next morning, after Ana-Lucia suggests that they leave the beach, a guy called Nathan says that they should stay on the beach, to keep the signal fires going.

On Day 5, the guy with the broken leg dies. On Day 12, the Others appear once more on the beach and take 9 more, including the 2 children. Ana-Lucia kills one of the Others, and finds a knife and a list of the nine that were taken. They decide it would be safer to leave the beach and head into the jungle.

They make their camp near a stream, which is surrounded by fruit trees. Ana-Lucia starts digging a pit. When it is done, she turns it into a cage of sorts and knocks Nathan out and throws him into the pit. I must say that up until that point I also suspected Nathan. But once she knocked him out, I knew he couldn’t be one of the Others, it’s never that easy.

Ana-Lucia keeps Nathan prisoner for days, demanding that he divulge the location of the children. She finds a banana peel hidden from view one day and demands to know who has been feeding Nathan. Mr Eko, who is still not speaking, was the culprit. Ana-Lucia confides in Goodwin that she intends torturing Nathan the following day.

That night, Goodwin frees Nathan. He hands him a bundle of what we can only assume to be food, and informs him of Ana-Lucia’s plan to torture him. He advises Nathan to head for the beach. When Nathan turns to leave, Goodwin attacks him and breaks his neck.

The next day, the tailies move again, and stumble across one of the Dharma bunkers. They find an old bible, a glass eye and a radio. Ana-Lucia tries to find a signal, but Goodwin tells her that they need to be on higher ground. He volunteers to do it, but Ana-Lucia virtually insists that she go along.

While resting after a laborious climb, she reveals that she knows that Goodwin is one of the Others. I was just beginning to suspect Goodwin – the way he was looking at Ana-Lucia while she slept was a bit creepy. Ana-Lucia is quite sharp, and I am impressed with the way she put it all together.

She demands to know where the children are. Goodwin informs here that the kids are ok, and that they are all “better off” now. He also says that Nathan was not on the list because he was not a good person. Ana-Lucia and Goodwin get into a struggle for the knife, and she ends up impaling him on a piece of sharpened branch.

She returns to the camp site, but does not reveal Goodwin’s "betrayal". On Day 41, Bernard picks up Boone’s transmission from the wreckage. “We're the survivors of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815" says Boone, those infamous words before his doomed crash. Bernard replies with "We're the survivors of flight 815.”

At that point Ana-Lucia takes the radio and switches it off. She says that it’s the Others (who the tailies refer to as Them) trying to trick them. “This is our life now” she tells the few remaining survivors. She heads off into the jungle, and starts crying. I did feel for her at this point. I really did. I cannot even begin to fathom what it must be like to have this on your shoulders. Mr Eko appears and speaks for the first time in 40 days, telling her that everything will be ok.

She asks him why it took him 40 days to speak, and he replies with "Why did it take you 40 days to cry?"

The final days of the 48 days are shown in an excellent montage of events. I absolutely loved that montage, the images and the music were excellently chosen. It ended with the moment that episode 6 ended with – Sayid’s stricken face, and his moving towards Ana-Lucia.

And there we have it – the other 48 days. Quite a few questions were answered here, like who Ana-Lucia meant when she asked Mr Eko if he had seen the children, and who it was that Boone spoke to. It’s also, in true Lost spirit, presented us with many questions too.

Ana-Lucia says that 10 minutes after the crash, Goodwin appeared in their little group. I am not sure how long it took for Ethan to appear in the camp of our original survivors. Just because we didn’t see him for a few episodes, does not mean that he wasn’t there from the onset.

This island is quite huge, so how did they get to the survivors so quickly? And its quite obvious that the Others are quite intelligent as well. Ethan, apart from being an excellent tracker and in great physical shape, was intelligent as well. It makes the Others more dangerous than ever, strong intellectually and physically.

More questions!! This show is going t o drive me insane trying to work out the innumerable clues, and trying to figure out just what the heck is going on. I’ve been told that it just gets better. Fasten your seatbelts people, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Oh, and before I forget, I have another new favourite too (goes into my list of faves with Charlie, Sayid, Sawyer and Hurley). I think that Mr Eko is just too cool, and I really like him.
