Man of faith, Man of science

Season 2, Episode 1
Man of Faith, Man of Science

How brilliant was the opening episode last night??? I was almost too excited (when a person gets this excited about watching TV, you know they need a life) to concentrate, but luckily the opening sequence had me riveted.

It showed us a man going through usual morning mundane tasks – breakfast, exercise. But wait, what’s that that he’s injecting into his arm. And just who is he anyway? At this point I knew that he wasn’t one of the usual survivors because firstly, you couldn’t see his face; and secondly – his body type just didn’t fit any of the regulars.

Hmm…. So I started thinking that just maybe he’s one of the new survivors that we have been hearing about. But that’s an odd way to start the show. So, I had all these weird and wonderful half-formed theories formulating, when BHAM! Oh my God. The man is in the hatch!!! In the hatch!!!!

Topside, Jack and Locke were busy peering into the hatch. Locke wanted to go down the hatch, but Jack insists that they go back to the caves. According to him, there’s no way to get everyone down into the hatch before “the Others” get there. Locke agrees after a while, but you could see that he wasn’t going to let the hatch go unexplored. “What are so afraid of” he asks Jack.

*Flashback (condensed)*
This is a Jack-centric episode. We see him being his usual hero-type and working on a patient in ER. She tells him that she wants to dance at her wedding – She is the woman that he eventually marries. She has a broken back and he is to operate. Before the op begins, she tells him that it’s ok, she knows that she will not dance at her wedding. “I’ll fix you” he promises. Later Jack seems to be running off his despair in a stadium. He bumps into someone. They chat. The guy’s name is Desmond and tells Jack that miracles happen if you just believe.

Desmond tells Jack that he was studying to be a doctor. “Maybe I’ll see you in another lifetime, brother” says Desmond, before going. Back at the hospital, Sarah can miraculously move her feet.
*End Flashback*

Meanwhile, back at the caves, Charlie is telling everyone that there are no Others, that Danielle was crazy and that the Others are a figment of her imagination. Jack returns and tells everyone that everything will be ok as long as they all stick together. Locke delivers the news that he’s returning to the hatch. He means to get to the bottom of it.

Shannon is looking for Vincent. She can’t let Walt down – he’s trusted her and she’s lost the dog. Somewhat desperately, she rushes off into the jungle looking for Vincent. Sayid, after trying to convince her not to stray into the jungle, runs off behind her. They see Vincent, and try to corner him. Sayid runs off after Vincent, and Shannon stumbles and falls.

She hears whispers and screams out for Sayid. Suddenly, in one of the freakiest moments in this episode…there is Walt directly in front of her! He’s dripping wet and looking utterly terrified. He whispers something and Sayid comes running back, but Walt has disappeared.

Kate, meanwhile, decides to join Locke at the hatch. Locke ties the harness around her and lowers her into the hatch. The harness slips and Kate is lurched further into the hatch before Locke can get a grip. Kate hears someone at the bottom. In the second wow moment, a bright dazzling light suddenly floods the hatch. Kate is gone.

At the caves, Jack decides to go to the hatch. He lowers himself into the hatch and starts exploring. He hears sounds and takes out the gun he brought with him. Suddenly music fills the hatch, and a light is switched on. Jack ducks behind a wall. He turns and sees Locke, but Locke has a gun pointed at his head. He finds himself at a standoff. The gun-wielding man steps into the light and says “Put the down down or I’ll blow his brains out, brother” It’s Desmond!!! Looking all manical.

Oh wow! I swear I sat in front of the TV for at least 5 minutes just gob-smacked! Desmond! In the Hatch! What the….. ????.

Let’s start at the beginning actually, before I get too wound up in the Desmond story. Jack’s flashback was illuminating in so far as we met Desmond, who smiled too much. What was just a chance meeting has now come around to haunt Jack. Just who is Desmond? And what’s he doing in the hatch? Is it just circumstance that brought them together again?

Personally, I don’t believe in co-incidences, so as far as I am concerned, there’s more to it that meets the eye. But what? I have no clue…I guess if I knew the answer to that then I would know the secrets of the island. So, at least we have discovered what’s in the hatch and the source of the magnetic force. And I am sure that most of you want to know what I want to know too… what’s Desmond doing there?

All the equipment sings of years ago… Desmond’s been there for a while, judging from the crazy look in his eye.

The “vision” of Walt, on the otherhand, was just too freaky. Did Shannon imagine it?? Was Walt really there, and if he was, how did he get away and why did he disappear when Shannon turned her back? I’m more inclined to believe that it’s one of Walt’s freaky abilities. Notice that Vincent was just there moments ago, and Walt really loves that dog. My take is that because of Walt’s freaky abilities, he was reaching out for help and because he loves and trusts the dog, he appears where Vincent seemed to be.

Make sense? Doesn’t to me either!

I now have more questions that ever! Argghhh! Waiting a whole week for episode 2 is going to drive me crazy. So, what do you think? I am so anxious to hear what everyone else thought. Let me know.
