Lost
Episode 511
Whatever happened happened

Wow. I think for the first time since Lost started, I genuinely felt sorry for Kate. Her having to have to give up Aaron was truly a moving moment. Everyone knows that I am not a Kate fan and Kate-centric episodes have always left me cold, but I really did feel for her. I think that at that point she really did believe that she was doing the right thing.

This week’s flashback belonged to Kate and her life off the island. Kate tracks down Sawyer’s old girlfriend Cassidy and his daughter Clementine. She befriends Cassidy and opens up to her about the island and Sawyer. Cassidy tells her that Sawyer broker her (Kate’s) heart.

Years later, immediately after Kate takes off from the quay-side after the losties “meeting” with Ben, Kate and Aaron go into a supermarket where she looses Aaron. She eventually finds Aaron with a blonde woman. She’s distraught and goes to Cassidy, where she admits that while she was scared she wondered when it would happen. Cassidy tells her that it was because Kate took Aaron, and that she was the one who needed Aaron, not the other way around.

A very tearful Kate goes to Claire’s mother and tells her about Aaron. She leaves Aaron with her saying that she’s going back to the island to find Claire.

Meanwhile, on the island, things are getting drastic as Juliet battles to save young Ben’s life. When Juliet informs Sawyer that the Dharma doctor is away, Sawyer tries to get Jackass to help. Jackass refuses. He tells Kate that whatever happens, they know that Ben will live. Kate is upset and leaves the cabin (even though Sawyer has ordered Miles to keep Jackass, Kate and Hurley together).

She goes to the Dharma hospital and offers to donate blood. Meanwhile, Sawyer has figured out that Ben let Sayid out of the prison. Juliet tells Kate that Ben is going to die. She says that the Others could help. She helps Kate get Ben into one of the buses and tells her that Sawyer will try and stop her and that she’ll give Kate as much of a head start as possible. Kate leaves.

A very distraught Juliet goes to visit Jackass and wants to know why he returned. He says he doesn’t know as yet.

Kate reaches the sonic fence where Sawyer catches up to her. He says that he’s not there to stop her but to help her. When he’s prodded by Kate why he’s helping her, he tells her that he’s doing it for Juliet as she believes it’s wrong to let a child die, even if it is young Ben.

They head off into Other territory. As they walk, Kate tells Sawyer about Clementine. Sawyer tells her that it would have never worked between them (him and Kate) just as he would never have been a good father to Clementine. He also tells Kate that he’s done a lot of growing up in the past three years when she asks why it’s working between him and Juliet.

They are surrounded by Others and Sawyer demands to be taken to Richard and they continue walking. Richard strolls out of the jungle and they hand Ben over. But Richard says that whatever they are going to do to Ben is going to wipe his memory; he will forget everything. Kate and Sawyer still agree that this is the only way. Richard takes Ben past the temple to a door. After a moment of slight …hesitation, he opens the door and enters.

A side point is a conversation between Hurley and Miles about the “whatever happened, happened” rule. Yay for Hurley for asking questions we all want answers to.

Anyway, back in 2007, Ben finally regains consciousness and awakens to find Locke sitting at his bedside.

Key points from this episode are:

• We know now what happened to Aaron, and how Kate got onto Flight 316. Like I have stated, I really did feel for Kate. Well, at least nothing sinister has happened to Aaron and he’s safe with his granny. Bit of an anti-climax that. Sigh. But I find that with Kate’s flashbacks, they’ve always been a bit of a let down.

Anyway, Kate tells Mrs Littleton that she’s going back to find Claire. I wonder how true that it is. I’m 100% sure that Sawyer had something to do with it. I know I’m going to regret saying this… but as much as I chortled with absolute glee when Kate found out that Sawyer’s with Juliet now, I sorta felt sorry for her. But it was so fleeting that it’s forgettable. And not worth mentioning.

I’m of the opinion that the woman we saw in the supermarket holding Aaron’s hand is Claire – a much older Claire, but I’m willing to bet that it’s Claire. So, either Claire has moved with our Losties to 1977, or she gets there by other means. But considering her father is in 2007, who knows….

• Kate tells the truth about the big lie that the Oceanic six have been living. Hmmm. Ok, I understand why she would tell Mrs Littleton, but what’s the reason for telling Cassidy? Unless it was her only link to Sawyer, whom she maybe really did love after all.

• On the island, Kate is slowly reverting back to the role of island girl from desperate housewife. And again, as much as I hate Kate, I’d rather hate island-girl Kate that desperate housewife Kate. At least when she’s island girl, she tries. And sometimes she screws up and sometimes she gets things right.

Her taking Ben to the Others… well, considering that they had no choice in the matter was the right thing - hand him over or let him die – there is no choice, in my opinion. As Juliet said, no matter what he grows up to be, he’s still a little boy. And also considering the Losties past in which Ben makes quite an appearance, there was no choice.

I like that Sawyer helped her. I do believe that Sawyer loves Juliet, but I think that there’ll always be a connection between these two. And apart from that – it was great to see Sawyer strutting about the jungle again.

• Well, at least we know now how Ben joined the Others. Hmmm. Two very interesting points here – firstly, when Richard first meets Ben, he tells him that he needs to wait. I wonder if Richard knew that this would happen.

• The second point involves our resident jackass – Jack. Well, Jackass, how does it feel to be responsible for sending Ben into the Others arms? Yes, yes… whatever happened happened. But who’s to say that it’s always Jackass who is somewhat responsible for this? Jackass was an ass of note in this episode.

When did he develop the Locke complex anyway? He suddenly seems to have a lot of faith in the island.

• Who the hell is Richard Alpert? I would absolutely love to see a flashback for this guy. Seriously.

• I’m of the opinion that Ben knew that Locke would be alive. I just think that Ben’s an Oscar winning actor.

Anyway, this is yet again a short article due to time constraints etc. Sometimes it doesn’t help to have a life… plus one-handed typing is really difficult.

What we learnt this week

• Kate befriends Cassidy and spills the beans to her
• Not content with that, Kate also spills the beans to Mrs Littleton and leaves Aaron with her.
• Jackass refuses to operate on Ben. Whatever happened to the Hippocratic Oath?
• Kate and Sawyer hand Ben over to Richard

New Questions this week

• What is Richard going to do with Ben?
• Where is Sayid?

Interesting Trivia (from this site)

• The Patsy Cline song played in this episode was "She's Got You." This was also played on a DHARMA radio last season when Kate and Claire were living together.

• Kate sings "Catch A Falling Star" to Aaron when he is asleep. This was the same lullaby that Claire asked Arlene Stewart to sing to Aaron when she was going to give him away for adoption in "Raised by Another" and this song also plays in Aaron's would-be nursery in The Staff station as the mobile spins in the episode Maternity Leave.

• The episode was first broadcast on April 1st, 2009 (i.e., March 32nd), and it shares a number of themes with the story March Has 32 Days from Mystery Tales No. 40, the comic book that was one of Richard's items presented to John Locke as a test in "Cabin Fever". In the 1956 story, a time traveler successfully alters history when he relives a day in his own past.

• The discussion of Hurley and Miles alludes the Cassandra complex:

The curse of having knowledge of the future, but being unable to alter the path of events or any ability to convince others as to the validity of one's predictions.

• The episode title could be an allusion to a Douglas Adams (Sci-Fi and Comedy author) quote from his book in the Hitchhiker's Guide Trilogy. "Anything that happens, happens. Anything that, in happening, causes something else to happen, causes something else to happen. Anything that, in happening, causes itself to happen again, happens again. It doesn't necessarily do it in chronological order, though."

• Hurley: “Checking to see if I'm disappearing... Back To The Future, man.”

This is in reference to the 1985 movie, starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly. In this movie, he played a teen who travelled back in time 30 years in the past to 1955 and ended up hindering his parents' courtship. When it looked like his parents were not going to end up together, and therefore he would not be born, his hand started to go numb and disappear.

Thanks for posting it again, Alexino.  :)

Ah, come on.  I'm not that bad.  Surely.

True, true.  I'll wait to see, however.

Its a small point but, how did Kate know about the flight? They only found out after seeing Ellie so she probably called Sun or Hurley, but everyone seemed surprised to see each other before the flight.

Coop.. didnt Kate go straight to Jack after dropping Aaron off with Claire's mother? I mean she still forced Jack not to ask her where Aaron is. That is how she found out about hte flight.

Upon hearing the KARL theory, Damon and Carlton burst out loud laughing in one of their podcasts.  I think it's safe to say that that is a coincidence.  :)

You mentioned that Ben's healing would wipe his memory, but Richard said that he'd also lose his "innocence".  I think that's important.

Yes, I forgot about that.  I wonder what they are going to do to him!
