LostSeason 5, Episode 2The LieWell, this week’s episode was not quite as action packed as last weeks, but an enjoyable episode none-the-less. But then again, I’ve never met a Lost episode that I didn’t like (Except for maybe Jack’s tattoo episode).
Let’s get the recap out of the way so we can focus on more important things.
Off the island, Hurley is still trying to wake Sayid up. He’s pulled over by Ana-Lucia who tells him to basically get his act together and take Sayid somewhere safe. So Hurley takes him home. While there, his father gets a visit from the police who are looking for Hurley and are now staked out outside the place. Hurley’s dad takes Sayid to Jack who revives him. Sayid is not happy to know that Ben now knows where Hurley is.
Meanwhile, Ben visits Hurley and tries to convince him to return with him to the island. Hurley hands himself over to the police instead, telling Ben that he will never join him.
Kate and Sun get together and Kate tells Sun about the lawyer who came around asking for DNA samples. Sun tells Kate that she needs to do whatever she has to to keep Aaron. Sun also tells her that she doesn’t blame her (Kate) for Jin’s death.
Ben takes Locke’s body for storage and pays a visit to Mrs Hawkings who tells him that they have a 70 hour window to get back to the island.
On the island, time seems to be somewhat stable for now. Sawyer sadly finds a shirt while the others try and get food, water and a fire going… all except Neil/Frogurt who just bitches and moans. Some time later, they are attacked by people shooting fire-arrows at them and they run into the jungle where Juliet and Sawyer are captured by people claiming that the island is theirs. Locke arrives and conveniently saves them.
Well.
Hurley has always been a favourite of mine. I think that many people tend to overlook Jorge Gracia’s fantastic portrayal of this lost, tortured soul. He has handled Hurley so tenderly and lovingly (I think so anyway) and he manages to not only make us laugh but care deeply for this wonderful character.
Anyway, this is not the first time that Hurley hasn’t accepted anything blindly and opted to do his own thing. And I
love it. I love that this great teddy-bear of a man is slowly turning out to be a formidable character on this show.
I still don’t trust Ben, but half of me wanted Hurley to go with him. The other half wanted Hurley to turn and run as far away from Ben as he could possibly get. I don’t doubt that something will happen and Hurley will return to the island. But maybe his return would be more on his terms than on Ben’s.
Anyway, the key points from the episode are:
• Hurley handing himself over to the police.
• Ben and Oracle Woman (Mrs Hawking) are in cahoots. She tells him that they have a 70 hr window in which they can return to the island. How did she calculate that time frame? Also, I’m sure by now that everyone is also thinking that Mrs Hawking is Daniel Faraday’s mother. It just has to be so. Daniel wouldn’t send Desmond to someone who wouldn’t know how to help them. But… Daniel tells Des that his mother is at Oxford. Unless there is a town called Oxford in the US, how does Ben get to her so quickly?
She’s obviously some kind of scientist and has determined where in time they are. And what about geographical location? If she says that they have 70 hours, then I’m sure she has some idea of where the island is. And
why is it so key that the Oceanic Six return to the island? Why does it have to be all six of them? What will happen if they don’t? Do Ben and his people so fear Widmore getting his hands on the island or it something more catastrophical?
• Ben tells Jack to go home and pack whatever he wants to take with him because he can never go back home again. Why??? And would Jack even want to?
• Hurley is still seeing dead people. His vision of Ana-Lucia was pretty cool. It seems to me that the dead folk of the island are trying to help Hurley, as illustrated in this episode. Ana-Lucia gives him advice and generally helps him out a bit.
• Sun and Kate meeting up was interesting. She tells Kate that if they wanted to expose the lie, then they would. I think that it further adds weight to the theory that Ben is behind this. She also tells Kate that she doesn’t blame her for Jin’s death.
I don’t know. There’s something about Sun that I can’t put my finger on. Was it just me, or did it seem that she was very shrewd during the conversation? She’s up to something.
• Who attacked our Losties on the island? Could it be the Others? Or people from Dharma? Firstly, we need to determine
when in time they are. It could be anything. They could be in the past because Bernard has to start a fire manually. Or they could be in the future as there seems to be clothes lying about..
If it’s the past, then it’s most definitely either Dharma or the Others. More likely Others because the Others seem like they would resort to flaming arrows. If it’s the future… then I have absolutely no clue. It can’t be the Others, because surely they would be aware that they could stumble across the losties. Oh Lord, my nose is now bleeding like Charlotte’s.
Speaking of Charlotte, I’m pretty sure that Daniel knows what’s going on with her.
• Isn’t it cute how Sawyer is suddenly so protective over Juliet? I love this change in Sawyer. I remember thinking last night that a few seasons ago, Sawyer would have turned and ran and wouldn’t have cared who got shot and who didn’t. He’s really grown as a person.
• Is Locke really dead? The woman at the butcher shop asks Ben the same question and while we didn’t hear his answer, his look said it all.
• Daniel appears to be trying to work out when in time they are by looking at the stars. Ooh. Definitely a case for them being in the past. It would be very difficult to work out when you are if you have no idea where the stars are supposed to be in the future.
That’s all I have for you this week. I don’t think my brain was meant to ponder the science of time-travel. Sometimes I wonder why I even try making sense of this all when I know that next week, or the next, all my theories will be blown to shreds. But, it’s fun. And it makes watching the show all that more exciting (for me at least).
