Only 14 days left before the end of a year-long competition and 19-year-old Zoë Zana from Cape Town, the last woman left in Idols SA Season 9, had to watch her Idols dreams fade before her eyes last night (Tuesday, 12 November) when she garnered the fewest votes this week.
Even though judges Randall Abrahams, Gareth Cliff and Unathi Msengana predicted in the early stages of this season that the competition would be dominated by the ladies this year, this marks the first time in the history of Idols that there is an all-male Top 3.
In the Top 4 Spectacular at the Moreleta Park Church Auditorium in Pretoria this past weekend each contestant performed two songs: a hit from a performer who left us too soon and a contemporary hit that charted in October 2013.
Sonke and Zoë also teamed up for a duet, followed by Musa and Brenden from Graskop.
The Strepsils Scream O’Meter measured the live audience’s response and Musa and Brenden won Round 1 in a tie, and Brenden took Round 2 as well, with Musa in second place. Sonke and Zoë rounded out the bottom half in both rounds.
But, shockingly, when the votes were counted the Scream O’Meter was proved wrong, and Musa found himself in the hot seat for the first time in this competition. Sonke was safe. But judge Randall Abrahams said whoever survived the cut still had a chance to win the competition.
To lighten the tension in the room, South African superstar Zonke - who helped mentor the Top 4 for last week’s performance - performed her latest hit, “Feelings”.
Now there is only one more chance for the remaining Top 3 contestants to compete for a place in the Idols Finalé on Tuesday, 26 November.
This Friday, 15 November, The Top 3 will each perform three numbers: one chosen for them by the Idols judges, one selected by the Idols Musical Director RJ Benjamin, and one hit of their own choosing. Tickets for that show are now available from Computicket.
Fans can also meet Brenden, Musa and Sonke in person this Saturday [16 November] when they will be signing autographs at the Truworths flagship store in Sandton City at 10:00am.
