Last night on Idols:
From the press release:With only three weeks to go before the Final, when South Africa’s new Idol will be announced, the pressure is on for the Top 5 contestants. It's clear that the battle is well and truly on, as the finalists perform better and better with each Spectacular.
In fact, even the four Idols judges are struggling to make up their minds. Dave Thompson adopted a points system to score the contestants’ performances this week, while Mara Louw and Gareth Cliff said that this year’s Final should have three contestants vying for the title.
The Top 5 Idols worked hard at rehearsing two songs each for this week’s Spectacular, in the theme of “Seasons and Colours”, which means the contestants could sing any song with a colour or a season in the title.
Song 1
MunroMunro du Toit kicked the show off in high gear with Just Jinjer’s “Paradise in Summertime”. “8 out of 10,” Dave said generously. “You are absolutely fantastic!” Mara praised. “I want you to win this competition,” she confessed.
“Dude, I can’t believe you’re still here, but I’m very glad you are,” Gareth laughed. Randall reserved his comment until Munro’s second song.
Jody Young Jody Williams showed a completely different side to her personality with the Michael Jackson hit “Black Or White”. “Tonight you appeared to be back - I’ll give you 7 out of 10,” said Dave. “I enjoyed it, you came alive a little bit,” said Mara, “but you still have a little problem with a shrieking sound.”
Gareth said it was very well done and Jody was brave to have chosen that song, and Randall enjoyed that she had a lot of energy, “but that didn’t mean that the singing was great.”
Tender Tender Mavundla’s first song was the Cindi Lauper Eighties classic - later also covered by Phil Collins - “True Colours”. Dave said he was “pretty bored” for most of the song, but Mara reiterated that Tender has “such talent. You used every emotion of that song,” she praised and awarded Tender “10 out of 10!”
Gareth agreed that it was the “best singing so far tonight”. Randall felt he wasn’t even in the position to judge her. “You’re a professional,” he said.
Daniel Daniel Büys chose the Van Morrison classic “Brown Eyed Girl”. “It’s 7, Daniel… No 6…” Dave equivocated. Mara reminded Dan again that it’s a competition, not a concert. “I was bored,” she complained.
“It’s a bit of a corny song, but I think you pulled it off,” Gareth comforted him. “You really have to focus on the singing, and that was a bit like your jeans - washed out,” said Randall.
Andriëtte Elton John’s “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues” was the first choice for Andriëtte Norman. Dave complained that he’d run out of numbers to give. “10!” Gareth suggested, but Dave would have none of it. Mara gave her a 9.
Gareth said Andriëtte and Tender would be his idea of a powerful Final. Randall said he really wanted to know where she got that soul from. “It’s unbelieveable!”
Jody Williams’s second song was the stirring Céline Dion ballad “The Colour Of My Love”. Dave thought it was “an improvement, vocally.” Mara admitted that Jody has a bright future, but “you just need to grow in terms of training yourself,” she advised.
“You’re our little angel,” Gareth said, and predicted that she would be in the Final. “Throughout that song you were ever so slightly sharp, and you need to work on that,” Randall cautioned.
Daniel
Daniel Büys also chose a ballad, Coldplay’s “Yellow”, for his second turn on stage. “You are a damn good singer,” Dave admitted. But Mara was disappointed.
“I don’t think they get the song,” said Gareth, and lectured a little on Coldplay. “I think you did a very, very good job,” he soothed. “The truth is, consistency makes winners,” said Randall. Your performance was alright, but inconsistent.”
AndriëtteAndriëtte Norman chose the Alannah Myles hit “Black Velvet” as her second song. “The benchmark for that song is now set by Andriëtte,” Dave praised in his solemn way. “Girl, you’re cooking!” Mara raved.
“The woman’s got soul,” Gareth twanged. “That song is actually about Elvis,” Randall lectured. “And he would have said, ‘Hunny - thank you’,” he drawled in his finest Elvis impersonation, reducing Colin Moss to giggles.
Munro Munro du Toit sat still for a change for Limp Bizkit’s “Behind Blue Eyes”. “Challenging, wasn’t it,” Dave smiled. “But that personality carried it off.” Mara was very impressed with how Munro interprets the lyrics of all his songs. “Congratulations,” she praised. “I can’t fault that performance,”
Gareth raved. “The reason you’re still here is that you have to do your best at every stage of the competition, and you’re the one person who gives it one-hundred-and-ten percent every time,” said Randall.
Tender And Tender Mavundla closed the show with the Tina Turner Bond theme, “Goldeneye”. “You did a fantastic job with a crap song,” Dave grumbled. “I agree with Dave - it’s not really a hot number,” said Mara, “but you rock!”
“It’s on - we’re on our way to a really spectacular Top 3,” said Gareth. “It started off OK and it got better. You’ll be in the Final,” Randall predicted.
