The second stage of the Idols sifting process happened in last night's episode and the contestants have been narrowed to a Top 24.
As from next week Sunday (16 Sept.) the 24 will start singing for our votes to get them into the Top 10 which means we can eventually start taking charge of getting rid of the beyond-useless ones ourselves.
Here's an official rundown from M-Net about how the episode got to choosing the final 24:
Idols Theatre Stage Part 2Broadcast date: Tuesday 11 September 2007
On the third day of the gruelling Theatre Stage in M-Net’s Idols there were 16 boys and 16 girls left in the competition.
Just as the relief started to sink in that they had made it through to Top 32, the stunned contestants were told that they would be singing duets the next morning, and that they only had that night to choose a partner, choose a song, and prepare a performance. One more day left - one last chance to make it to the Top 24.
Jackoleen Aasvoël and Lucky Linksteen, decked out in matching outfits, set the tone for an exciting day. Jody Williams and Richard Hala did Cape Town proud with an even more powerful performance and Tender Mavudla and Richard Mtsweni kept raising the bar.
Rob Warren improvised a dynamic opening to his duet with Carla Louw and they delivered a professional, sexy rendition of “Signed, Sealed, Delivered… I’m Yours”, but then Caroline Borole and Bjorn Blignaut upped the game even further with their performance of the same song.
Stevie Wonder’s classic hit really seemed to get the contestants hot and bothered and Andriëtte Norman’s version with Dominic Momberg amazed even Randall. “Andriëtte, you’ve been a revelation,” he marvelled. “You were dead in your first audition, but my God, you’ve come alive!” By the time Belinda Cherry and Daniel Buys took to the stage things were really getting hot – ending in a sexy smooch.
The talent on display was truly inspiring, but there was only space for 24 in the next phase. One by one the contestants had to face the judges alone to hear their fate. Their response to the results showed that this competition would deliver its fair share of Divas, as Tender’s triumphant “What’s my name?!” exclamation, Dudu’s lap of honour and Caroline’s victory dance demonstrated!
Not everyone was as cocky, though. Liza Bronner, Heidi Booysen and Jackoleen Aasvoël were clearly shocked to get a yes, and Dominic Momberg was philosophical. “Sweet,” was his laconic response. Laconic is not Peter Moss’s style, though, and his scream of joy raised the roof.
Belinda and Daniel had some explaining to do about That Kiss, but it worked, and they’re in. “I was wrong about you initially,” Gareth apologised to Peter Simeoni, whom he had mocked when Peter first auditioned in Season 2. This time he happily admitted, “You can sing”.
