Coming up on Discovery this February, 2008:

Wreck Rescue
Premiere date: Tuesday, 5 February at 15h05

There are thousands of them scattered across the country. Some are badly broken and need major mechanical repairs. Most require surgery. All need serious tinkering and TLC if they are ever to go back on the road.

These much-loved classic cars may be wrecks, but their devoted owners definitely think they’re worth rescuing.

Mark Evans leaves his workshop behind to help inspire and motivate five other amateur car restorers, all of them committed to finishing their garage projects within 40 weeks.

Each episode follows one enthusiast’s attempt to re-commission, restore or transform a much-loved motor to achieve a driving ambition - from chauffeuring a daughter to her dream wedding, to taking part in a classic rally.

Mark Williams' Big Bangs
Premiere date: Wednesday, 6 February at 17h30

mark_williams

Mark Williams' Big Bangs is a new four-part documentary that traces the history of all things explosive - from humble beginnings with ninth-century Chinese alchemists to the present day.

Mark, best known for his roles in the sketch comedy show The Fast Show, will learn about the history of explosives by creating some impressive blasts of his own. His chronological journey takes him to, among other places, China, Denmark, Germany, Istanbul and Belgium.

Each location plays host to a re-creation of an almighty bang, demonstrating the big sparks of that time. His exploration of the world of explosions leads Mark to create a firecracker from bamboo sticks, climb Mount Etna to find sulphur, build a musket and fire a machine gun. Not to mention blowing up a huge building, the destruction of a Ford Escort by cannon, explosions to clear potential avalanches and the dismantling of a railway line.

Wrecks To Riches
Premiere date: Thursday, 14 February at 17h30

wreck_to_riches

In Wrecks to Riches mechanics scour salvage yards for complete write-offs that they believe they can not only repair, but sell at a profit. These crafty mechanics need to turn scruffy wrecks into stunning vintage cars, worth high prices.

With a limited starting budget, the team finds the first low budget car and, if all goes well, uses the profit from that job to move up the motor chain to a superior car such as a Lexus or even an MG.

The investments are high but the return can be even higher. However, if all goes wrong and they fail in this risky challenge, the money lost comes out of their own pockets.

Most Deadly
Premiere date: Monday, 25 February at 21h00

most deadly

Most Deadly combines dramatic events with science and emotion. It marvels at how quickly, unexpectedly and disastrously things can turn, escalate or run rampant.

The show's cameras are placed at the point where the most deadly of events have occurred, showing the incredible and often long-term impact the event had on structures, people and the future.

How Do They Do It? 4
Premiere date: Tuesday, 26 February at 19h30

How Do They Do It? returns for it's fourth season to further investigate how people take for granted many of the objects that make up the modern world - mobile phones, sunglasses, concrete, pencils, railway tracks, trainers, tyres… even water. These simple things are often the products of the most extraordinary, highly sophisticated engineering and production processes.

As the modern world becomes progressively automated and mechanised, we grow further removed from the way things are made and how things are done.

How Do They Do It? reveals how our comfortable, modern way of life relies on the problem-solving genius of engineers and the vision of industrial designers who are constantly striving to make things better.

Each segment in How Do They Do It? starts with something very familiar, but then transports us to somewhere quite out of the ordinary. Each story takes us behind the scenes to show how to do the things and make the things that form the modern world. Each episode reveals the hidden stories behind our everyday lives.
