Moments to Ponder (11/12/13)

Something wonderful happened the other day. In the morning on my work to work a taxi comes to fetch us to the main taxi rank. At one of the little stops on the way a man comes running from a distance, frantically waving at us to wait for him. Our driver is pulling out, presumably because another taxi is also there collecting passengers.
I tell the driver that we are leaving someone behind. Two passengers, women, impatiently point out that the other taxi is available for the man. But something has told me the man will lose both rides if I don't speak up. And true to my premonition, the other taxi pulls out and passes us, full. And the man is left standing there.

But our driver had heard me. He stopped, and the man ran up to us and got in.

And this is where it gets really wonderful. The same day,  I knock off work and the sky is a heavy, sullen grey. The wind is kicking up dust and trees are reeling. To get a taxi, I have to walk at least 15 minutes towards the heart of Sandton, pushing out my thumb for every possible taxi that might be going my way(from Morningside to Olievenhoutbosch, roughly 20 kilometres apart)

By now the wind is blowing little stinging pellets into my face. A taxi comes down the road. But it's not one of mine. Not my colour, not my registration. I look away...but wait a minute, someone inside the taxi pushed out a thumb! I raise mine back. The tax practically brings traffic to a halt as it screeches into the tiniest of spaces alongside the road. I run and get in, just as the heavens finally open.
