On Carte Blanche Consumer this week (20 May):

Fake R200

Shops and the public have been warned to be on the lookout for fake R200 notes. A million bucks’ worth of them is believed to be in circulation, ostensibly mass-produced in Lesotho.

But how do you know if your wallet is home to these counterfeit notes and what should you do with them? Carte Blanche Consumer finds out.

Producer: Sophia Phirippides

AARTO

The Administrative of Road Traffic Offences Act has been described as South Africa’s first comprehensive plan to tackle lawlessness on the roads. It’s intended to keep traffic violations out of court and deal with them through a points demerit system. But how exactly does this work? Carte Blanche Consumer makes sense of it all.

Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Producer: Bernadette Cook
Journalist: Susan Comrie

Parrot Scam

In the world of exotic birds, the rarer the species, the higher the price. So when fertilized parrot eggs are advertised at rock bottom prices, collectors naturally show an interest. But is this a scheme that may never hatch? Carte Blanche Consumer ruffles some feathers.

Producer: Ashleigh Hamilton

People’s Choice: Wine

This week some consumers at a local pub join us to find out if they can tell plonk from pinotage. Or does it all taste the same after a few glasses?

Producer: Hayley Horan

Caret Blanche Consumer is on M-Net on Thursdays at 19h00.

The answer to the wine question: it all tastes the same after one sip. I'm convinced the whole wine-conoisseur-thing's a case of Emporer's New Clothes.
