On Carte Blanche this Sunday, 17 August 2008:

Metal Theft

It’s not just the theft, its damage, injury and even loss of life. And it’s a problem worldwide. The demand for metal to support growth in China and India has dramatically pushed up the price of scrap metal and thieves are literally making off with anything from drain covers and railings to railway tracks and radiators.

Carte Blanche looks at the problem in South Africa and finds out just how easy it is to sell stolen scrap metal to unscrupulous dealers.

Abandoned babies

A staggering 900 babies are abandoned in South Africa every year and there is a dire shortage of adoptive and foster parents. Lenise and Alan Hamilton have fostered 39 babies in the past 12 years as a way of making a difference to give  back to society.

Carte Blanche is doing the same over the next six weeks as part of the show's 20th birthday campaign and this Sunday we look at the needs of hospitals and charities.

Presenter: Derek Watts
Producer: Joy Summers

Poaching

Fancy some fresh warthog or an impala for the braai tonight? In some parts of the bushveld you can simply place an order with the local poacher. Carte Blanche hears all from a fourth generation poacher who calls himself a “traditional hunter” and claims he has an ancestral right to the land and its animals. Game farm owners naturally think otherwise.

Presenter: Bongani Bingwa

Still Stoked

It started as fun in the sun when he surfed his first wave in Durban at the age of seven. He later made a name for himself as King of the Super Tube and capped it with a world title in 1977. Carte Blanche speaks to surfing legend Shaun Tomson about life, love, the loss of his son, and his new movie Bustin' Down the Door.

Presenter: Bonita Gorrie-Nuttall
Producer: Nikki Berriman
