Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (17 June 2012):

Elton Stole My Song

Guy Hobbs 2
Guys Hobbs 1

It was a Top 10 hit in many parts of the world in the eighties and supposedly described Elton John’s crush on an East German border guard during the Cold War. But South African photographer Guy Hobbs is crying foul.

He’s accused Sir Elton and his song-writer Bernie Taupin of cribbing the lyrics of “Nikita” - a tune he once sent them for consideration, titled "Natasha". Has he any hope of winning a court battle against this music legend? Carte Blanche looks at some precedents.

Producer: Angus Begg
Presenter: Derek Watts
Journalist: Amalia Christoforou

Carolina Water

Mining houses deny responsibility, so what's turning Carolina's water into the quality of battery acid at times? Carte Blanche investigates this Mpumalanga mining town where pristine water has become contaminated and residents say it’s time government stopped pussy-footing around.

Producer: Joy Summers
Presenters: Devi Sankaree Govender & Chantal Rutter Dros

All at Sea

The Cape of Storms is littered with dead ships that are becoming long-term problems, with owners refusing or unable to pay up for repairs. The crew of the “Panos Earth” was abandoned and became virtual prisoners on board, caught in a dispute between owners and insurers. And with no pollution control legislation in place, we're sitting ducks should disaster strike. Carte Blanche finds out if our law-makers are stuck in the doldrums.

Producer: Liz Fish
Presenter: Derek Watts

Waleed Rashed

As Egyptians go to the polls on the final day of the presidential elections, we speak to Waleed Rashed, a young Egyptian who played a critical role in the Arab Spring uprising that led to Hosni Mubarak’s downfall. Carte Blanche caught up with this young twitter activist on a recent visit to South Africa.

Producer: Susan Comrie
Presenter: Derek Watts

Carte Blanche is on Sundays at 19h00.
