Coming up on Carte Blanche this Sunday (14 May):

Fire Chief in Hot Water

Our emergency services aren’t always what they’re meant to be. Slow response times, lack of equipment and training are just some of the problems dogging the EMS. So how come part of the budget in the busiest metro, Johannesburg, is used for parties, overseas trips and fashion shows? Ask the boss, say insiders.

Carte Blanche finds out if the executive head of what’s described on their website as “a leading world-class African emergency management service” has been fully accountable.

Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender

Earth Race

Kiwi Pete Bethune may hold an MBA, but he’s more concerned with the business of protecting the earth from the unscrupulous.

After his boat was crushed by a Japanese whaler in the Antarctic, he leapt aboard the vessel from a jetski, in an attempt to arrest the captain. Instead, he landed up in jail himself.

Now he’s free and wants the earth to be that way too. Carte Blanche caught up with him in Cape Town.

Producer: Angus Begg

Election 2011

In what’s been a year of service delivery protests and growing dissatisfaction with local government, South Africans go to the polls in a few days’ time for an election that could spring some surprises.

Carte Blanche examines the mood in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, a traditional ANC stronghold, and speaks to leading players in the battle for the Cape Town Metro to find out if change is in the air there too.

Producer: Kim Cloete
Presenter: Chantal Rutter
Journalist: Leila Dougan

The Maestro of Sterkspruit

For nearly three decades, Bunny Ashley-Botha was musical director at the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir.

Now, he’s on the other side of the mountain, in Sterkspruit, where he’s established a choir at a rural school. And there’s a lot more to the sweet sounds emanating from the hills. Carte Blanche tracks down the maestro and his choristers.

Producer: Este de Klerk
Presenter: Bongani Bingwa

Caret Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.
