Coming up on Sunday's Carte Blanche (4 October, 2009):

Shoot to Kill

From the start, President Jacob Zuma’s administration made it clear it wouldn’t be soft on criminals. Earlier this month, police minister Nathi Mthetwa indicated that an amendment to Section 49 of the Criminal Procedure Act was on the cards. This week it was enforced.

But, giving police more power to deal with criminals has alarm bells ringing for many. Carte Blanche looks at possible consequences of a trigger-happy police force.

Presenter: Bongani Bingwa
Producer: Backyard Productions
Journalist: Susan Comrie

On Zimbabwean soil

10 years ago, Zimbabwe was called the bread basket of Africa. But a disastrous land reform policy initiated by Robert Mugabe and his self-styled war veterans saw it reduced to nothing short of a basket case. Now, under a government of national unity, the country is spluttering to life. But what’s happening on the farms? Carte Blanche reports from a more media-friendly Zimbabwe.

Presenter: Annika Larsen
Producer: Thando Sibanda
Journalist: Amalia Christoforou

Midlands

From the disastrous land reform of Zimbabwe, to South Africa, where some believe things are heading the same way. A stand-off between farmers and so-called land invaders in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands is becoming ugly. Carte Blanche looks at a government programme that seems to be failing.

Presenter: Bongani Bingwa
Producer: Carol Albertyn Christie

Flying High

Imagine an offer of R10-million to leave a job with “immediate effect” because you were allegedly not any good at it. Or did former SAA boss Khaya Ngqula deserve his golden handshake because he put in place the cost-cutting measures that now see the national airline chalking up a profit of R400-million? Carte Blanche investigates whether SAA’s turnaround is as remarkable as it seems on paper.

Presenter: Devi Sankaree Govender
Producer: Este de Klerk
Journalist: Amalia Christoforou

Carte Blanche is on M-Net on Sundays at 19h00.
