Mohinder

Four months after the events in Kirby Plaza, Mohinder gives a lecture in Cairo in which he states that he's discovered a virus that only targets people with abilities. There's not much of an audience, so people clearly aren't buying into the Sureshes' theories.

After the lecture, a man approaches Mohinder and asks him to sign a copy of Chandra's book. The man mentions Mohinder's sister and Mohinder reacts by slamming him up against a wall and demanding to know who he is.

Mohinder correctly guesses that the man is from the Company and he says that he doesn't want anything to do with them. The man replies by saying that Chandra's book is being filed in the parapsychology section together with hypnosis and alien abductions and the Company are the only people who would take him seriously. The Company representative’s name doesn’t get revealed yet, but for ease of recapping I’m going to use his real name, which is Bob.

Mohinder agrees to listen to what Bob has to say, and over a cup of coffee, Bob offers him the resources to research the disease which killed Shanti, Mohinder’s sister, and which is the virus Mohinder referred to in his lecture. When Mohinder says that the research will be expensive, Bob says that it won’t be a problem, and he demonstrates why by turning his teaspoon into gold.

Maya and Alejandro

In Honduras, two new characters are shown running away from a police car. The two of them, Maya and Alejandro, manage to evade it by taking refuge in a building.

While they wait for the coast to clear, Maya tells Alejandro that she can't run any more. When he tells her that they have no choice, she says that if they're caught then people will die.

His response is that people will die if they don't run, and that by Tuesday they'll be in America. The police car has gone, so the two of them continue on their way, passing by a wanted poster with drawings of the two of them and the word “Homicidio”.

In the evening, the two of them meet up with a driver who says we will take them to within six hundred miles of the American border for a price. That price is not just money, but also an insistence that Maya ride up front with him.

There's a brief argument about this, with the result that Maya and Alejandro end up riding in the back, together with a bunch of other people. In the conversation prior to them climbing into the truck, we learn that Maya is Alejandro's sister.

The truck travels for some time, and Maya passes the time by reading a Spanish translation of Chandra’s book. She tells Alejandro that Chandra has figured everything out, and Alejandro replies that if there’s a cause then there must be a cure.

The truck stops and the driver beckons Maya and Alejandro out. He tells them that he made a mistake and that the price he quoted was actually for each of them, not for the pair of them. He also repeats his demand that Maya ride in the front with him.

When Alejandro refuses to accept this, the driver pulls out a gun a pistol-whips him before kicking him a few times. While Alejandro tries to get up, the driver forces Maya into the front of the truck and then drives away.

Alejandro continues on foot in the direction the truck was going, and manages to catch up with it. The truck is stopped in the middle of the road, and there are no signs of movement from it.

He opens the door to the cab and finds the driver and his henchman slumped over. The two of them are dead, and appear to have been bleeding from their eyes. A similar thing has happened to the passengers who were in the back.

Alejandro follows the sound of a person crying and discovers that it's Maya. She says that she didn't want to do it, and he replies that he knows that and tells her not to worry.

So it appears that Maya has the ability to kill people by making them bleed from their eyes. I think this is the first time we've seen an ability that doesn't appear to be beneficial in any way at all, as there's not much you can do with that ability with the possible exception for self-defence.

Alejandro pulls the dead driver out of the truck and the two of them get in and drive off. For some reason they seem to have left all the dead bodies in the back of the truck, which could lead to some awkward questions in the future.

Hiro

Hiro arrives in Japan in 1671, only to be greeted by a group of armed warriors on horseback. Hiro runs away from them, but stops when he sees another rider waiting at the top of a hill.

At this point, a solar eclipse begins. Unfortunately, the effect is ruined if, like me, you realise that the moon is covering up the sun way too quickly, and also that the warriors and Hiro are all staring directly at it. I can understand the warriors not knowing how bad for your eyes it is to do that, but Hiro has no excuse.

While the eclipse is happening, the archers raise their bows and fire at the rider and Hiro, who freezes time just before the arrows can hit him. He walks over to the lone rider, and suddenly realises that the rider is carrying a banner with the helix symbol on it. Hiro realises that this must be Takezo Kensei, and teleports both of them (and the horse) away.

As most people would be, Kensei is puzzled by what just happened. He tells Hiro before running off that fifty ryo is not worth dying for and that Takezo Kensei can keep his money.

It turns out that the rider wasn’t Kensei. Instead, the real Kensei had been hiding behind a tree, ready to put an arrow into the leader of the warriors. That is, until they fled as after Hiro demonstrated his ability.

Hiro is excited to meet his hero, but is surprised when Kensei removes his mask to reveal that he’s Caucasian and not Japanese. Responding to one of Hiro’s comments, Kensei remarks that no one’s ever called him a hero before.

The two of them travel for a while, and Hiro becomes disillusioned when he learns that Kensei is a simple mercenary and not the great hero the stories say he was. Hiro relates some of the deeds Kensei is supposed to have done, including saving the village of Otsu.

He breaks off when he smells smoke, and the two of them see a village in the distance in flames. Kensei tells Hiro that the burning village is Otsu.

By the time they arrive at the village, Hiro is upset, believing that he broke history. Kensei takes a jug of sake from a wagon and starts to drink, which only upsets Hiro even more. He continues to relate the stories to Kensei, saying that Kensei married the swordsmith's daughter, the most beautiful woman in Japan.

A woman comes up to Kensei and blames him for not fighting the bandits despite being paid to do so. Kensei protests, but the woman grabs his sword and says that she's going to rescue her father.

As she walks away, Kensei tells Hiro that she's the swordsmith's daughter, and she doesn't appear to have any interest in him. When Hiro tries to convince Kensei to go after her, Kensei punches him, knocking him flat on his back.

Matt and Molly

In New York, Matt stands in front of an apartment door, together with other police officers. He says he just wants everyone to get out there safely, but kicks the door open when he hears a crash and a scream.

He shoots two armed gunmen before making his way to the bedroom, where he encounters a man and a woman. Both are screaming that they are the hostage and that he must shoot the other one.

Matt uses his ability, which reveals that the woman is the hostage taker. He shoots her, and overhead lights come on and a bell rings.

The woman gets up, and asks Matt how he knew it was her. So either this is an exercise of some sort, or there's some serious necromancy going on.

A detective comes up to Matt, congratulates him and hands him a real police badge. It's now clear that Matt has passed the final detective test. It's not revealed how he overcame the dyslexia which had hampered him whenever he tried to take the written test, but then I suppose that there aren't enough nitpickers around to warrant an explanation for that being given.

Later that day Matt goes to pick Molly up from school. A teacher calls him offer, and in the ensuing conversation we learn that Matt is now divorced and is looking after Molly.

The reason the teacher wanted to speak to Matt was about a number of drawings Molly had made, pictures which contain the symbol and a lot of eyes. Towards the end of last season, when Molly mentioned that there a bad person she either couldn't find or didn't want to (I forget the exact details of what happened then), so the pictures could be depicting that person.

That evening, Matt and Molly eat pizza in Mohinder’s apartment, where the two of them are now living. Two men living in the same apartment isn’t unusual, but when they’re looking after a young child who isn’t related to either of them, it’s a little strange.

Then consider the fact that one of the men is cultured and has never been seen involved with a woman (Eden doesn’t count as she was controlling him), while the other is more butch and is recently divorced. Put all those things together and then ask yourself this – are Matt and Mohinder really “just friends”?

Matt tries to ask about the drawings, but Molly refuses to answer. Eventually she asks if she can finish her meal in her room, and Matt reluctantly lets her.

That night, Molly tosses in her her sleep while having a nightmare. Matt tries listening to her thoughts, and apart from Molly’s cries for help, also hears a voice saying that he can see Molly.

Molly wakes up and Matt asks her to tell him where the person who can see Molly is. She refuses to do so, saying that he will kill Matt.

Kaito, Ando, Nathan and Angela

Kaito sits on a bench in Kirby plaza, waiting for Ando who has gone to get coffee. On his way back, Ando bumps into a bearded man. That man is Nathan, although I don’t think there’s a lot of significance behind their encounter.

Ando tells Kaito that it’s been nearly four months and that maybe Hiro isn’t coming back. Kaito replies that for close to thirty years he saw Hiro as a disappointment, but now that he knows what Hiro can do, he is prepared to be patient.

Kaito picks up the newspaper which Ando had brought with the coffee. A photograph of Kaito falls out of it.

The photo has been torn from a larger photo and the symbol has been drawn in red over Kaito’s face. Ando asks what it means, and Kaito says that he’ll be dead within twenty-four hours.

After his encounter with Ando, Nathan enters Peter’s apartment to find his mother there. Angela tells Nathan that Peter’s dead and that he would be alive if Nathan had stuck to the plan. Of course, the chances of Peter actually being dead are virtually zero given that Milo Ventimiglia's name appeared in the credits and Heroes doesn't go in for flashbacks and ghosts like Lost does.

Nathan tells Angela to leave, and after she exits the apartment she notices a photo stuck to the wall. It’s a photo of her with the symbol drawn over her face, in a similar manner to the one Kaito received.

That evening, Kaito and Ando go to the roof of the Deveaux building. When Kaito tells Ando to leave, Ando replies that he cannot desert Kaito and will stay and help him fight. Kaito tells Ando that he will need need a sword, and Ando says that he will bring Kaito one.

As Ando turns to leave, Angela arrives. The two of them show each other the photos they received, and the torn edges match up.

From their conversation it becomes clear that they were part of a group of twelve people that had something to do with people with abilities. The identities of the other members aren't revealed, with the exception of those who are dead, namely Charles Deveaux, Linderman, and Angela's husband.

Kaito tells Angela that he's leaving for Japan that night and suggests that she disappears as well. She leaves without saying anything further.

Kaito hangs around for a while until someone shows up. We don't see who that person is as they're wearing a hooded top and their face is obscured. Kaito recognises them however, and says that he wasn't expecting it to be that person.

Just then Ando returns carrying a sword. He sees the hooded person run at Kaito, pushing him off the roof and going with him.

Ando rush over to the side of the building and looks down. Kaito is lying on the ground in a pool of blood, but there is no sign of the hooded person.

Claire and HRG

In California, HRG accompanies Claire on her first day at a new school. HRG reminds her that she's ordinary Claire Butler, and mustn't do anything to call attention to herself, which includes not trying out for cheerleading.

Claire suggests that one way of not drawing attention to her would be for her to get her own car. HRG says that it was going to be a surprise for her birthday the following month, and he gives her the keys to the car they came in, this season product placement offering from Nissan – a Rogue.

I don't know how this is supposed to help Claire stay under the rader, as wouldn't driving to school in a brand-new car be a surefire way of drawing attention to yourself? Even though driving yourself to school is a lot more common in America than in South Africa, with the driving age being lower, it's surely not that common for parents to give their children brand-new cars to drive to school in.

The bell rings, and Claire heads into the school, narrowly avoiding being hit by a car being driven by a fellow pupil. Before school even started Claire has found herself in a position where she might have revealed her ability. She's clearly having a little difficulty of grasping the concept of keeping a low profile.

Claire's inability at keeping a low profile emerges again in science class. The class are told to light their Bunsen burners and Claire does so, but then puts her hand over the flame.

This behaviour is noticed by West, the boy who nearly ran Claire over earlier that day. He introduces Claire and then asks her if she's a robot or an alien, the distinction being that robots do what they're told and are just like everyone else, while aliens do their own thing.

The science class suddenly changes, going from something which required lit Bunsen burners to a discussion of evolution, which is a pretty bizarre transition. The teacher asks a question to which the answer is “Charles Darwin”, and Claire, presumably knowing the answer as a result of having read Chandra's book, writes the name down in her notebook but doesn't answer the question out loud. So maybe there's some hope for the low profile thing after all.

HRG arrives at his workplace, a copy shop. The manager, who is a good few years younger than HRG, complains about him being late and says that he needs to start seeing some commitment to excellence from him.

The cheerleaders practise in the school gym, while around them other pupils are engaged in various athletic activities. One of them is badminton, which Claire is playing, in between sneaking looks at the cheerleaders. Badminton is one of the few sports I can claim to have a reasonable ability at, so I can categorically say that the girls aren’t that good, although that is of no consequence at all for any plot point in the entire episode.

Claire goes to retrieve the shuttlecock, which has landed near West. He picks it up first and when she asks for it, he first calls her a robot, based on her knowing the answer to the question in the science class but not wanting to let anyone know that she’s smart.

Claire returns to the badminton court, where Debbie, the head cheerleader is trying to convince one of the other badminton players to do a backflip off the tower in the middle of the gym. Claire tells Debbie to leave the girl alone, and says that she’ll do the backflip instead.

She climbs to the top of the tower, but when she gets there she says that she can’t do it. The bell rings and the pupils all leave.

I have to wonder at the absence of any teacher. Surely a school wouldn't leave its pupils in a gym class completely unsupervised? That’s just begging for a lawsuit.

Claire sits for a while on top of the tower in the deserted gym before standing up and doing the backflip. She lands but then collapses, having clearly injured her leg in the process.

Maybe I'm being a little over-critical here, but but if you hurt yourself in that way jumping from something high, wouldn't you collapse immediately? Claire very definitely landed properly before she went down. Then again, maybe it's not really possible to improve on the way it was done given that it's just being acted out and not really happening.

Claire looks at leg, which is clearly broken, but she's able to snap it back into place and it heals. West enters thy gym, although it's not clear just how much he saw.

At Copy Kingdom, HRG is taking a coffee break. The manager comes in to complain about the break being too long, and HRG responds by grabbing the manager's fingers, bending them back and then twisting him over. He tells the manager that from now on he will work how and when he feels like it, to which the pain-stricken manager agrees.

In the evening, the Bennets share a very awkward meal. Claire and HRG say that their days were uneventful, and Sandra marvels at how well they've adjusted to their new lives. That is, with the exception of Mr Muggles, as no one outside the family has any idea that he's a championship winner.

HRG's cellphone rings, and he goes into his study to answer it in private. On the other end of the line is Mohinder, who tells HRG that he's in. HRG congratulates him, saying that together the two of them will bring the Company down.

Much later that evening, Claire phones Nathan, saying that she needs someone to talk to. Nathan tells her that he knows she's looking for answers, but he can't give them to her.

As he puts the phone down, he catches sight of himself in a nearby mirror. In the reflection of his face is horribly burned, but when he looks back at it again after turning away, it's normal again. Presumably this has something to do with him flying away with a radioactive Peter at the end of last season, although it's not clear what.

It's not without incident on Claire's end. She doesn't notice, but watching her from outside her bedroom window is West. The significant part of that is that Claire has an upstairs room, and West is hovering in mid-air.

The interesting thing for me is not that West has an ability, but that it's the same ability as Nathan. Before this, everyone we've seen has had a unique ability.

I don't know what the significance of this is. I suppose it's not impossible that West is related to Nathan, although that could make things a little icky if they're introducing West as a love interest for Claire.

Peter

In Ireland, three men sneak into a shipyard. They're looking for a container which is supposed to have a consignment of iPods.

When they get to the container, they don't find any iPods. Instead it's empty inside apart from a shirtless man handcuffed to the side wall.  The shirtless man is Peter, who is wearing a symbol pendant around his neck like the one the Haitian wore.

When Peter won't answer their questions, one of the men tries to hit him. He doesn't succeed, as Peter raises his hand and produces some sort of energy burst which sends the man flying across the container.

Peter eventually does speak, only to say that he doesn't know who he is.

Bob says that it won’t be a problem, and he demonstrates why by turning his teaspoon into gold.

thank goodness for this. i was watchin in black and white and didn't understand what Bob had done to the teaspoon!

I can understand the warriors not knowing how bad for your eyes it is to do that, but Hiro has no excuse.

LOL

LMAO at your consipacy theory!! i don't think Matt is Mohinder's type in any case.

hahaahahah!!!

West may not have seen anything but he may have sensed that Claire is special in his kind of way. Otherwise, i'd have to assume that he flies around town watching random women as a sport.

I wasn't blown away by the 1st episode, at least as much as i expected i would be. there just seemed to be some 'energy' missing from the episode. Hope it catches on in the coming episodes.

Thank you Cit for the recap, thoroughly enjoyed readin it!

For some reason they seem to have left all the dead bodies in the back of the truck, which could lead to some awkward questions in the future. -

heh heh, cit you are a master of understatement...

I suppose that there aren't enough nitpickers around to warrant an explanation for that being given.

lol, the heros writing team need to hire you! no funny loose ends and people staring directly into the sun!
