Heroes Episode 17 - Company Man

Matt and Ted break into the Bennets’ house, looking for any evidence that might explain what was done to them. They’re about to take the computer when the Bennets arrive back from the hospital. Ted convinces Matt that they can grab HRG right then, and as the Bennets enter the house, Ted and Matt reveal themselves.

Fifteen years earlier, HRG is congratulated by his boss on his appointment as “head of Primatech Paper”. He is introduced to his new partner, who it turns out is Claude.

HRG tries to convince Matt and Ted that there’s nothing going on, but Matt overhears Claire’s thoughts, revealing that she knows something. Matt tries to question Claire, and he learns that she can heal.

Fourteen years earlier, HRG is given a baby whose mother has died in a fire. The man who gives Claire to HRG is Hiro’s father, and he tells HRG that if Claire manifests, then they will take her.

HRG tries going for a hidden gun, but Ted manages to grab hold of it and points it at Sandra. In order to save the situation, HRG tells Matt via his thoughts to shoot Claire, which Matt does.

Matt and HRG take Claire’s body up to her room where they watch her heal. HRG convinces Matt to team up with him against Ted in order to prevent things from getting any more out of hand.

HRG and Matt return downstairs, and they tell Ted that the information he wants is at the paper factory. Ted tells them to go and fetch it while he stays there, giving them one hour to get back to the house.

It’s 7am when they leave, which means that Sandra checked out of the hospital quite early in the day. I guess that even with her mind fried, she still couldn’t handle hospital food.

The time also indicates that Matt and Ted chose to break in at a time when most people are still at home. I suppose they could have been watching and decided to break in once the house was empty, but it still doesn’t mean that it was a good choice of times.

Fourteen years earlier HRG tells his boss that he thinks Sandra might be getting suspicious. The boss tells HRG about the Haitian, mentioning that he’s mute. I know some people don’t talk much, but fourteen years one hell of a long vow of silence.

At Primatech Paper, HRG grabs a tranquiliser and somehow signals the Haitian. When he arrives, HRG confronts him about not erasing Claire’s memory, and the Haitian replies that he answers to someone whose instructions supercede HRG’s with regard to Claire’s life.

The question now is who on earth that could be. It’s certainly not Claire’s real parents, as neither of them knew she was alive.

The only other people we’ve see who know about Claire’s origins are Hiro’s father, HRG’s boss and Claude. It’s unlikely that the first two would want to protect Claire in that way, and Claude appears to have been in hiding for a long time. So at the moment I have no idea unless it’s Linderman, who seems to be involved in everything else.

Seven years earlier, HRG drives to a bridge with Claude. He tells Claude that he’s looking into a security breach and that that security breach is Claude, who admits that he’s been hiding someone with powers as he’s become unhappy with the vivisection that’s going on.

The two of them get out of the car on the bridge and HRG shoots Claude. Claude falls over the side of the bridge but turns invisible as he does so, meaning that there’s no way for HRG to know whether he’s really dead or not.

Acutally, thinking about it now, maybe it is Claude who the Haitian was working with. Claude would have tried to protect Claire, but in the event of anything happening to him the Haitian would take over. It’s certainly a plausible theory.

At the Bennet’s house, Claire sneaks out through her bedroom window and in through the back door. She manages to free Sandra and Lyle, but Ted interrupts the escape attempt, and only Lyle gets away. In the process, Ted burns Claire’s neck and Sandra sees it heal, meaning that she now has no doubts about Claire’s ability.

HRG arrives back with Matt and a file containing things related to Ted, which he gives to him. The Haitian frees Sandra and Claire, and they leave the house.

While Ted is talking to HRG, HRG’s boss comes in through the back door and shoots Ted. Ted starts to glow and set things alight.

He also presumably gives HRG and Matt a high dose of radiation. It’s a good thing Mrs Matt (I can’t remember her name right now) is pregnant, as Ted’s radiation may hamper Matt’s chances of fathering any more children.

Matt manages to exit the house but HRG stays, hoping to tranquilise Ted. Upon learning that HRG is still in the house, Claire goes back inside and is able to knock Ted out, finding the right place to inject him despite the fact that he’s thrashing around and she presumably has never injected anything into anyone before. She gets fried to a crisp in the process, but is able to heal.

At Primatech, HRG and his boss discuss the Haitian’s actions regarding Claire. HRG claims that the Haitian hid Claire from him, although we know that HRG is actually the one who’s actually been hiding Claire from the organisation.

Primatech are holding both Ted and Matt, both of whom are unconscious. HRG’s boss expresses the possibility of HRG working with Matt and then asks him when he can expect Claire, to which HRG replies that he’ll bring her in.

Three years earlier HRG is sitting at a table with Claire as he tries on glasses and asks her opinion. I must say that I’ve never known an optometrist to allow a patient to take a selection of frames home with them, but maybe things in Odessa are different.

HRG says that he’s reached the age at which his father needed glasses and Claire asks if she’ll need them too. HRG tells her that the moment has arrived to tell her that she’s adopted, but even though she didn’t grow inside Sandra, she grew in their hearts.

Back in the present, HRG drives Claire to the same bridge where he shot Claude. Waiting for them is the Haitian.

With HRG’s permission the Haitian shoots HRG, ensuring that it’s not a fatal wound. HRG then tells him to erase anything from his mind that would lead the organization to Claire, and the Haitian obliges.
