Heroes Episode 16 - Unexpected

Yes, I know it's late.  Blame my IT department for that - I had no internet access most of Thursday and the whole of Friday.

Ted and Matt

While holed up in the Nevada Desert, Ted Sprague is contacted by Hana Gitelman, a woman who has the ability to send messages on the Internet with her mind. She also has the two lines that we saw on Ted and Matt, and she tells Ted that those are injection marks from a double-needled gun.

Matt gives Janice a diamond ring, claiming that he got it cheap, although in reality it’s one of Malsky’s diamonds. While Janice is putting on the ring, she tells Matt that a Professor Suresh had phoned, but that she didn’t tell him anything.

Later on, Janice comes in from having been to have the ring resized. She tells Matt that the jeweler said that the diamond was worth $40,000, and she asks Matt where he got it from.

Matt explains about Malsky and the diamonds and Janice tells him to give the diamonds to the police. In order to make sure that he does so, she hands him the phone so that he can call them first.

At that point the phone rings. Matt answers it, and agrees to meet the person who made the call.

That person happens to be Ted, who is waiting in the graveyard where his wife is buried. Ted introduces Hana, and they explain that the shoulder marks are as a result of a radioactive isotope being injected into them for tracking purposes.

She reveals that she tracked down a shipment of the injection guns to a man named Bennet at Primatech Paper. Ted tells Matt that while he can get in anywhere, he needs Matt in order to make sure that Bennet tells the truth.

Mohinder and Sylar

In Montana, Mohinder and Sylar meet Dale Smither, a woman who has developed super-hearing. She is initially skeptical of the two of them, but after Sylar shows how he can melt metal objects, she agrees to let Mohinder test her the next day.

Mohinder and Sylar spend the night in a motel. Before they go into their rooms, Mohinder tells Sylar that his father was murdered. In fact, he was murdered by the very man he’s standing talking to, but obviously Mohinder wouldn’t know that.

Mohinder appears to possibly be a little suspicious about Sylar, but if he is, doesn’t do anything about it. Later on that evening Sylar visits Dale, and we all know what he’s about to do, even though we don’t see it.

The next morning, Mohinder and Sylar vist Dale, only to find her dead. Sylar convinces Mohinder that they shouldn’t stay, and the two of them drive off.

Sylar is wincing through out this scene, which is his reaction to his newly developed super-hearing. Mohinder is concerned about this, but Sylar claims that it’s just a headache.

Hiro and Ando

Hiro is rescued from the storeroom by Hope’s “boyfriend”, S.R. Gustavson. Gustavson asks where Hope and Ando are. Hiro replies that he’ll only help Gustavson if he can go along to save Ando.

Ando and Hope arrive at a bus station and they get out of the car. Ando offers to help Hope with her bag even though she refuses.

He reaches for the bag and lots of poker chips fall out. Hope pulls a gun on Ando and he backs away.

At that point Gustavson and Hiro arrive, and Hope and Gustavson start shooting at each other. Ando ends up being hit in the arm.

Hiro helps Ando up and the two of them take cover in the baggage compartment of a bus. After a conversation in which Hiro says he shouldn’t have brought Ando and Ando says that Hiro showed him what it means to be a hero, Hope finds them, points her gun at Hiro and pulls the trigger.

The bullet flies out of the gun towards Hiro, but before it reaches him suddenly goes backwards, back into the gun. Obviously, this is as a result of Hiro using his powers, but I’m not quite sure what’s supposed to have happened.

We’ve seen Hiro teleport through both time and space and we’ve also seen him either stop or slow down time while still allowing him to manipulate objects. Neither of those happened here.

Rather what seemed to happen was that time was reversed within a small locality, which raises too many time travel related problems for my liking. I suppose the point is here that Hiro was able to use his powers to get out of the situation, but I’m not too happy about the way in which it was done.

After the police have arrived, Hiro tells Ando that bringing him along was a mistake. Too many people have died since they began their mission and he’s not prepared to lose Ando as well. He takes his bag out of the car and gets on board the bus, telling the driver that he’s alone.

Peter, Claude, Isaac and Simone

In New York, Isaac explains to HRG that he thinks Peter is invisible. HRG says that this means that someone who they thought was dead isn’t. He leaves with the Haitian, but gives Isaac a gun in case Peter turns up at the studio before they find him.

On top of the Deveaux building, Claude attacks Peter with a wooden staff, trying to get him to make use of his powers. After being hit a few times, Peter is able to stop the staff with his mind. In other words, he’s making use of Sylar’s telekinesis, which answers my question as to whether Peter would be able to make use of Sylar’s powers even though they’re acquired rather than inborn.

In the evening, Peter tries to get Claude to open up by talking about the pigeons that he looks after. Their conversation is interrupted when HRG fires a tazer at Claude.

The Haitian is with HRG and he fires his tazer at Peter. Peter is able to stop the tazer before it hits him, and he grabs Claude and flies off the edge of the building.

Claude wakes up in Peter’s apartment and accuses Peter of setting HRG on his tail. When Peter protests his innocence, Claude realizes that it must have been Isaac.

Claude shows Peter a scar on his shoulder in the same place that Matt and Ted have exhibited the two lines. He tells Peter that he’s on his own and leaves, turning invisible in the process.

Simone visits Nathan to ask if he had heard from Peter. When Nathan says that he hasn’t, Simone suggests that they go public regarding the abilities of Isaac and the two Petrellis. Nathan doesn’t think this is a good idea, as it will result in them being rounded up and stuck in a lab.

Isaac paints in his studio, and when he comes out of his trance he sees that he’s painted a picture of Peter standing in the studio. He turns around to see Peter standing there in the pose that he’s just painted. Even though I liked the transition, that means it wasn’t really a painting of the future, although it could be argued that it was the future when Isaac started painting.

Peter asks Isaac what he got in return for turning on him and goes on a bit of a rampage, sending Isaac flying across the room. Isaac picks up the gun HRG had left, but Peter turns invisible. While he’s invisible he starts throwing paintings on to the floor.

Isaac spins around, looking for Peter. He hears a sound from behind him and turns and shoots.

He hits Simone, who had just entered the studio. Peter reappears and catches her as she falls, and she appears to die in his arms.

Claire

After Sandra Bennet claims not to know her, Claire runs off looking for HRG. Lyle tells her that she’s not there, and by the time she returns, Sandra is back to normal. Or at least as normal as you can be after the Haitian’s been at your mind so many times.

After supper, Claire tries to convince Sandra that HRG might have had something to do with her memory problems. Sandra doesn’t take Claire too seriously, but when she takes milk pack to the fridge, she collapses.

Claire phones HRG, who at the time is on the rooftop having just seen Peter fly off. He tells Claire that he’s coming home and the Haitian that Claude will have to wait.

At the hospital, a doctor tells Claire that her mother is suffering from a subdural hemorrhage, something which would affect her memory. The doctor asks if there’s something that could have caused it, and Claire tries to explain about the Haitian, an idea which the doctor predictably doesn’t take very seriously.

HRG eventually arrives at the hospital, having returned from New York. The doctor had told him about Claire’s theory, and he tries to explain his actions to her, but Claire doesn’t accept it.

Sandra is allowed to leave the hospital, but when the Bennets get home, they find Ted waiting for them. HRG tells Lyle to get Sandra out of the house, but Matt appears, armed with a gun, saying that everyone has a lot of questions.

I got an inexplicable "warm and fuzzy feeling" when Peter used those powers on Isaac!!
