Heroes Episode 7 - Nothing To Hide

My apologies for being a day late in posting this recap.  Unfortunately, events in the real world prevent me from completing it in time, and as my time-stopping powers have yet to materialise, there wasn't much I could do.  Hopefully you weren't too traumatised at not being able to read it yesterday.

Peter and Nathan

The episode begins with Peter dreaming about Simone’s father, the old man he had been looking after. In the dream Peter tells him that he can fly, and proceeds to demonstrate it.

Back in the real world, Peter wakes up to find Simone at his apartment door, and she tells him that her father has died. I don’t know if this sequence has any relevance in the bigger scheme of things, but I thought it was a good idea to mention it just in case.

Later on, Peter and Simone travel to Isaac’s apartment to find that he has disappeared, along with his paintings. We know that Eden had something to with it, but it’s not revealed what. Eden also has links to another cleared out apartment, that of Sylar’s, but I could be looking for things that aren’t there in that case.

Simone tells Peter that Linderman has the painting which was missing from the sequence he and Isaac looked at. Peter’s messages on Simone’s machine saying that he needs the picture in order to save the world seem to have convinced her. While I know that the painting is probably going to be the key (because that’s the way that these sorts of stories work), Peter does seem to be putting a lot of faith in a painting he has never even seen and has absolutely no clue regarding its contents.

As Linderman is funding Nathan’s campaign, Peter goes to visit Nathan and walks in during the middle of a family brunch, which the Petrellis have “always had”, or have always had ever since they thought it would be a good publicity stunt to have one and invite a reporter. We get to see Nathan’s wife Heidi for the first time, and we learn that she’s confined to a wheelchair as a result of a car accident in which Nathan was driving.

The reporter is interested in Nathan’s recent trip to Las Vegas, particularly in the rumours regarding his going missing for a few hours and the involvement of a blonde. Peter comes to Nathan’s rescue by saying that Nathan was actually checking out a clinic where Peter would be able to go following his recent mental problems. The reporter accepts this, although it seems like a fairly shaky cover story to me.

Heidi also appears to buy the story, although that was after she asked Nathan in private whether it was true or not, saying that she needed to know if he still loved her as it would give her the hope she needs for her rehabilitation. Nathan tells her that it is indeed true, proving that he can lie effectively, and so is definitely well-suited for a job as a politician.

After Peter helped out Nathan, it was time Nathan to reciprocate by getting hold of the painting, right? Wrong. Instead, Nathan phones Linderman and asks him to send the painting to a gallery, so that Peter won’t be able to get hold of it.

Nathan then visits Peter and tells him that he’s had no luck with the painting, and that Peter should just forget about the whole thing. Nathan also tells him about his encounter with HRG and the Haitian, and that if people knew what the brothers could do, they’d lock them up and throw away the key.

Claire

Zach turns up at Claire’s house to tell her that he found the tape. He doesn’t understand how it could have been under his bed when he’d looked there numerous times before. Of course we know that HRG had it and either him or an associate must have placed it there, although we still don’t know how HRG found out about it in the first place.

Unfortunately for Claire, her brother Lyle discovers the tape and watches the multiple attempts of Claire trying to kill herself. She catches him and he responds by stapling her hand.

She pulls the staple out and the injury heals itself, as we knew it would. I’ve never been stapled in the back of the hand (in fact I’ve never been stapled at all), but it seemed like there was way too much blood in that scene.

As a result of seeing this, Lyle freaks out, runs outside and locks himself inside the car that’s parked in the driveway. There’s some pleading from Claire and some not very helpful encouragement from Zach, and Lyle hands the tape over after she says that if their parents knew then they might thing that it was a mistake adopting her.

So it seems that Lyle is not just a bratty little brother and actually cares a bit for his sister. Is he adopted as well? I don’t think it’s been clarified either way, but I may have missed it.

Matt

Before leaving for work, Matt tries to tell Janice about something that he’s discovered, presumably that he can read other people’s thoughts. But before he can do so, he reads her thoughts and learns that she’s been hiding something from him, although he isn’t able to find out what.

At the police station, FBI agent Audrey walks into the men’s locker room to tell Matt that he’ll be working with her. Another dead body has been found, and she believes it to be another one of Sylar’s victims.

The body has been severely burnt and is putting out a high level of radiation, but there is a fingerprint seared to a bone. The fingerprint is run through the computer, and it spits out the name of Ted Sprague.

Of course, since Sylar is the big villain of the series, it’s not going to be that easy. It turns out that Ted has the ability to emit high levels of radiation, and that his wife is dying of cancer. The dead body is that of her oncologist, whom Ted accidentally killed after being told that there was nothing that could be done for his wife.

There’s a showdown in the hospital, but Matt manages to diffuse the situation by reading Ted’s wife’s thoughts and relaying them to him. Ted has a strange marking on his neck, that of two parallel lines, and when changing back in the locker room, Matt discovers that he also has them.

He makes another discovery as well. His former partner congratulates him on a job well done, but in his mind (which Matt hears) he calls Matt a loser and says that he’s been sleeping with his wife. Obviously, that’s what Janice has been hiding from Matt.

Niki, DL and Micah

Niki wakes up to find DL gone with Micah. It wasn’t clear whether he took the money as well, but I’m guessing that he did.

Niki’s friend Tina finds her, and Niki tells her about EMI. It turns out that EMI’s name is actually Jessica, and that she first appeared six months ago, in other words about the time when the murder and robbery for which DL is wanted (and Jessica actually did) took place.

Meanwhile, DL and Micah are driving out in the desert and Micah is trying to convince DL to do the right thing and not run away from things, and other idealistic stuff. Although since Jessica is one of the things DL is running away from, I can’t say I blame him.

They come across a burning car in the middle of the road, as you tend to do when you’re in the middle of nowhere. Another car pulls up right behind them, and Hiro and Ando get out. The amount of interconnectedness between the characters hasn’t quite reached Lost proportions, but it’s getting there.

A woman is trapped inside the car, and DL uses his power to phase his arm through the window and open the door from the inside. Fuel has leaked from the car and it catches alight, so we all know that there’s going to be a big explosion, and it looks like DL won’t make it out in time.

However, we also all know that Hiro is going to stop time and move them out of harm’s way, and indeed he does. Ando mentions that he’s phoned the police, and so DL naturally takes off. Actually, I should probably rather say “drives off” as “takes off” has a different meaning considering that we’ve seen Nathan and Peter (and possibly Sylar) fly.

DL and Micah stop at a motel for the night, and Micah sneaks out to a payphone. The phone has a sign saying “Out of order”, but Micah places his hand on it and it starts working.

I would just like to take the time to point out that I called this. I mentioned in my last recap that Micah could have powers relating to technology, and it looks as though that is the case.

Micah phones home, and Jessica answers. He asks if he can speak to his mom, indicating that he’s fully aware of the two personalities, but Jessica tells him that Niki’s unavailable.

Micah tells Jessica where they are, and then DL finds him at the payphone. Micah claims to be goofing around, something which is backed by the phone not working as soon as DL tries it. This means that Jessica loses the connection, and that’s where the episode ends, with her presumably about to go after DL and Micah.
