BBAS: The Burn fight

Written by Segololo from the blog Biggie Motherland on 15 Sep 2010

The burnmates task was to debate the Malaria effects in Africa. As they sat discussing the issues with Hannington as chairperson of the debate; a tipsy Lerato interjected quite a bit as the others were talking. Her stand was that she has questions and need answers since she does not have a lot of experience or information on Malaria.

Hannington was requesting that she needs to listen to others and give them a chance to express their points and she will be given a chance to speak. Lerato got upset and did a walk-out. As she walked into the house, Hannington said “we are not gonna be babies”, Lerato replied from inside the house “I am not expecting to be babied, Hanningnton” and returned from the house with glass and bottle in hand.

Lerato carried on taunting Hannington maintaining that he is being stupid. Hannington responded that she is the one being an effing biatch. Lerato insisted that she was not talking to him as he reiterated that they are all in this together. She taunted him asking if he wants a badge for being chairman. Hannington told her to sit down.

She carried on asking if he wants a badge and an effing cap saying he’s a sherrif. He said she must sit down. She told everybody he can effing do whatever he wants, he can say whetver the efff he wants, she doesn’t give a efff. Hes told her, “the only problem here is you”.

As they raise their voices, and got close to each other’s faces, Hannington pushed her head away. Lerato shoved him back and hit him with the bottle. He shoved back and she hit him with the bottle again. He shoved her again and the bottle hit Lerato on her face. At this point, Sheila is pulling hannington away from Lerato; Tatiana and Paloma are holding Lerato down. Code was trying to pull Hannington but not with a lot f force.

burnfight bottle

Now, I am shocked at what happened. I am beyond speechless at the events that left Lerato with blood on her t-shirt, Hannington crying and apologizing, Paloma giving NGO sermons and Sheila attacking Code for not using her manly powers to help her stop Hannington.

I personally feel too many things right now to give a sound opinion so I ask –
Was Lerato right for taunting Hannington?
Was Lerato being c-operative with everybody?
Was Hannington right for shoving her head away as they got more aggressive?
If the events had happened with Lerato and another girl barnmate (Tatiana); and Tatiana reacted the same way Hannington did, would we be so angry?
Who must be immediately evicted?

Thanks Segololo for the article. l saw the clip of what happened last night. Lerato was very wrong for taunting Hannington, and it made him angry but the way Hannington reacted was also very wrong he shld have walked away. Hannington shld be evicted immediately and Lerato shld be punished for starting the fight. Thats how l see it

But that is typical of most women, they never know when toSTFU, Don't you agree?

Now this makes sense, that Lerato thinks she is more clever than any of the africans in the house, as much as hannington did the most stupid thing by stooping to her level, I think she got what she deserved!

Dont get me wrong I am in no way promoting violence but sometimes if umuntu ekubangela isicefe you are left with no choice....

My goodness i missed this.... i'll make a reminder boogy-babe thank you.

as much as Lerato was wrong for taunting Hanni he was also wrong to get physical cos he's the one who pushed first. And getting out of hand trying to get to Lerato - would he have hit Lerato had Sheila not stopped him? That is wrong behaviour and inexcusable.

Biggie must now get the rejects to do a task on violence.....clearly they need to learn maan. As much as its good for ratings and we love some drama - what they're doing is wrong maan.

Both of them were wrong, both of them shoved the other.

As a society we place more responsibility on a man in a situation like this. What Hanni did was wrong, but it doesn't make Lerato right.

Both rank among my favourite housemates so I'm very sad about the situation.

Meme J
15 Sep 2010 14:07

In the immediate future, both are going to lose from what happened: Hanni was likely to be voted back into the house, and if Hanni leaves, Lerato will be blamed. There are already those cursing her on Oboma, just as there are those baying for Hanni's blood.

Eish, those rushes of blood to the head ...

Aowa shem there are so many 'violence' themes in that house and Hannirato doesn't top Meryl and Uti threatening to KILL Kaone and telling him to sleep with one eye? Uti had a broom in Kaone's face. Hayi bo, Lerato must go to AA or smthng, drunkeness is no excuse for her behaviour shem.

Big Brother On Barn Brawl

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wed, 15 Sep 2010 16:32

The Barnmates were called together and BIg Brother gave feedback on the events of Tuesday night, stating that the events in the barn raised a number of very serious issues that need to be addressed.

In Big Brother's Words:

As you are aware, both Lerato and Hannington have seen a psychologist today (Wed, 15 Sep). They will both have consultations again tomorrow (Thur 16 Sep).

Resolution
There are a number of ways in which the situation can be resolved. This week in the barn, issues affecting communities in Africa are being addressed.

Big Brother would like to extend this, to deal with the issue of violence.

Barnmates, you have read and you understand the Barn rules. You all know that physical violence is unacceptable. Verbal violence is equally unacceptable. However, as in all conflict situations reasonable, rational and sober solutions can be found - if the participants are willing to work towards them.

Deeper Understanding
For this reason Big Brother would like to suggest that this very difficult situation be used to help create a deeper understanding of both conflict resolution and anger management. This is not going to be easy, but Big Brother will involve professional consultants over the next week to assist.

Obviously this will require the voluntary involvement of all the Barnmates.

No More Violence
Understand very clearly that there will be no more violence in the Barn. From this moment on Barnmates should regard themselves as being “on probation”. There will be no more warnings.

As responsible adults, Big Brother expects the Barnmates to participate peacefully and co-operatively in this process. The Barnmates need to work together in resolving this situation. In conjunction with professionals, Big Brother will prepare projects to help heal the wounds, rather than making them worse.

Alcohol Free
In addition, alcohol will be removed from next week’s shopping and supplies. If Barnmates feel that it will help, they can place any alcohol currently in the barn at the exit doors.

BIg Brother signed off by thanking the Barnmates for their co-operation and attention.

okay watched the video finally. I understand y y'all trying 2 b politically correct

i've admitted so many times on the  BB blog that i hate lerato and maybe u guys may use that against me but that's fine.

my understanding of what i saw in the video and yes we're humans and watch with a selective eye when it comes to our favourites but neither lerato nor hanni r my favourites and i'll tell u y, I didn't like the way they conspired and treated tartiana b4 and after she came to the barn and  am sure most of u will remember that is if u don't have selective amnesia.

KARMA. In most cases a relationship that starts the way hanni and lerato's did, end up very badly  and this r/ship  was mostly based on their hatred 2wards sum1 who was playing a game just like dem and had 2 do replacements as dey would have done as well.

2 b honest i didn't c any abuse, lerato pushed hanni and hanni pushed bak and lerato almost fell. i don't know but maybe we nid 2 define abuse. hanni did not hit her and lerato was sayin stuff in hanni's face and sum of u r sayin he could hav walked away but how do u walk away when sum1 is literally in ur face.

this is no different 2 what happened btwn yakob and Uti.

lerato and hanni r the same they r loudmouths and hanni has a bad temper but that does not make them bad people.

u know i was warming up to lerato especially when she was talking to paloma's sister about not being judgemental and stuff like that i was wow she makes a lot of sense.

in that conversation as well with Paloma's sister i noticed that she did not want to give other people a chance to speak and Paloma's sister kept on sayin to her that she should wait so she can finish what she wanted to say, u'll also recall the racism debate with Yaka in the house how she jumped n said yaka was racist b4 she could hear yaka's full side of the story.

yes she's eloquent and her George is quite good but that does not mean she's clever than any of those house/barnmates.

they say there's good in everyone and am talking in terms of character but 2 b honest I havnt seen the good in Lerato so far

15 Sep 2010 22:55

Hanington has the habit of being violent. In his season (BBA 4), he violently pushed Liz and she fell on the bed. This in no small way contributed to his eviction. Now a year later he is pushing Lerato. He can continue entertaining us and hope BB gives all the losers something at the end of the show. However he should forget about going back to the house.

<<As they raise their voices, and got close to each other’s faces, Hannington pushed her head away. Lerato shoved him back and hit him with the bottle. He shoved back and she hit him with the bottle again. He shoved her again and the bottle hit Lerato on her face. >>

check the video on the site and play it in slomo... Lerato hit herself with the botttle due to hannington's shove... Hannington did not hit, slap or punch her..

rainbowjnb
16 Sep 2010 10:52

Hi Uhdikts long time no see....also haven't watched much BBA

Without ha ving seen the video or the articles my opinion would be, both H & L are loudmouths.  Seems L was drunk and we know how much that adds fuel to the fire.
That Barn is getting to everybody now, it is small and uncomfortable and there's not much to do, BB needs to do something drastic, get them back to the main house or let them leave.

Yakob's leaving (and his parting words) have had a profound effect on the remaining housemates, they can't help but think about what he said.  You will notice things haven't been 'as calm' as before he left.  Also with there being more of them in there now space is becoming an issue.

how about BB lets them back into the house and move the remaining HM's to the barn?

We are going to see more and more of these outbursts now.

hlobimk
16 Sep 2010 10:58

Hannington might have only shoved Lerato but he would have seriously hurt her had the barnmates not held him back! My problem with him is he seems to loose his marbles only with the girls. Last year he fought with Elizabeth, Liz and Mzamo. I mean there seems to be a pattern here with him. Even if Lerato started it, still he seems to be having too many fights with the ladies.

They should both get evicted from the show since Lerato also attacked him with that bottle. Her part in this should not be condoned, it would send the wrong message.

GML
16 Sep 2010 11:03

I feel for H, really I do, he seemed to have turned on a new leaf this  season.
I wouldn't want to seem him lose a chance at the prize for this, I think everyone deserves a second chance.
I like them both a lot, they like each other a lot and looked to be on their way to forming a good friendship.  I hope they don't throw it away because of a momentary lapse in judgement

WhiteSockGirl
16 Sep 2010 11:20

<<How come most blame Hannington and not both including the print media?
Memej was right I think.>>

And in Namibia, MemeJ's colleague, Natasha, made it out as if only Lerato is to blame.  She wrote: 'He pushed her face (non-violently, but a definite push)'

The Link

I don't agree with that!  He pulled her ear!!!!  How is that non-violent?

Anyhow, I am not happy with Natasha's take it on it either.  I am actively seeking a balanced news report on this.  They are both equally guilty.  They both took part in a physically and verbally abusive interaction.

hlobimk
16 Sep 2010 11:22

@ GML. What did Meryl do to deserve the insults being hurled at her by these guys?

We all know that Meryl has been a target because these guys believe that she is a slut and therefore have a right to call her as such whenever they feel like it but with Hannington on the other hand we can't say all the fights were started by the women because he was just their target.

I don't think it's the same.

Hannington was wrong to push her, BUT she kept on shoving her drunk stupid face on him, now we all know 99% of the people would have reacted the same way Hanni reacted, there is nothing as annoying as a drunk person who dont want to shut up and keep shoving their face on you.....

Unfortunately there were camera's around and that made it look so bad, if you looked at the video closely hannington was hit by a bottle not once not twice but 3 times by this crazy lunatic, and was he just supposed to stand there and get bashed because it was a woman?

anyway i will say this again I am not condoning any form of abuse but I would have given that Lerato the warmest klap that she should have got from her mother long time ago, she needs to learn to respect other people the show is not just about her!

@FK

The video we saw did not tell the whole story. What Hannington did is very wrong and he should be booted out. The emphasis should not be on Lerato. He is a  serial woman beater. He did the same thing during his season. He has admitted he has a temper - very violent too. There is no way he is going to win the money, so his time is better spent now looking for a cure to his problem!!!!

FK

The video we saw did not tell the whole story.
@Dorkas - please give the link to the correct uncensored story.  Until then, I will believe what I saw and will only comment on what I saw.

The emphasis should not be on Lerato.
Well, until she realises that she also contributed to the fight, I will back off.  What Smelly did is wrong, very wrong.  However, he as admitted to it, taking ALL the blame and realising that he has a temper problem and wanting assistance.  As for Lerato SMH.

@D7s... Mneedy did show the full video... I had PVR'd this crap and re-watched it at my house in slomo... there was no part edited out... from the time the discussions were taking place and Lerato would not shut her trap right until the fight was stopped...

What amazes me is so many people can watch that video and come up with totally conflicting 'eyewitness reports' of what happened. ..... I still maintain they were both wrong. And, let me be the devil's advocate, can it rightly be classified as women abuse? Said without prejudice and as someone who abhors violence, and violence against women.

STOLEN MERCHANDISE

Brother goes bad on live TV

Sengadi's mother, Anne, and friend Sunshine Shibambo are now planning a Ban Bodily Abuse march to take place outside Sesani Studios, where the series is being filmed, to force M-Net to take action.

Anne yesterday met M-Net representatives to demand "answers about what they are doing to help" the 26-year-old Soweto resident. Shibambo said: "It amazes me how many people think Lerato deserved physical violence. Drunk or not, it is scary because clearly some people believe if you talk too much, you deserve a slap.

"If it were you, your sister or mother in the same place, would you say they deserved it? Wake up, Africa, this is what some women live with on a daily basis."

After the incident on Tuesday night, Sengadi spent Wednesday in bed crying, and asked Big Brother to grant her a phone call to Shibambo. He refused.

M-Net publicist Lani Lombard confirmed the meeting with Sengadi's mother.

"M-Net representatives met Lerato's mother and we are all working together in the best interests of all the housemates," said Lombard.

However, the broadcaster has apparently refused to evict Ugandan contestant Kuteesa, sanctioning him only with a lecture from Big Brother and an order to apologise.

After the physical incident on Tuesday, Sengadi said to a housemate: "I have never had a guy raise a hand at me - not even an uncle or relative or whatever. For it to happen with someone I'm stuck with because of circumstances and not because of choice is even bigger bulls**t.

"If this happened outside, I would be pressing charges, whether I lost a tooth or not. Even if it was a scratch, I would have."

Sengadi, punched in the face, suffered a bleeding gum.

Lombard said because Sengadi had not requested medical assistance, Big Brother producers did not send in a doctor.

"The housemates receive medical attention on request, and Lerato has not asked Big Brother for any medical assistance since the incident on Tuesday evening," she said.

Activists and celebrities have taken to social networking sites Facebook and Twitter to have their say about Kuteesa's behaviour.

Rapper HHP posted a picture of a newspaper poster concerning the incident, accompanied by the caption: "This is heartbreaking".

YFM DJ and e.tv 808 music show presenter Dineo Ranaka said: "Hannington must leave the house, the country, and his life. You don't ever put your hand on a woman"

5FM DJ Anele Mdoda wrote: "Big Brother Africa is a load of horse s**t! But then again, why would it be an issue if a man pushes a woman? Nice African man, live up to the stereotype. He must be evicted."

This issue of violence against women is very sensitive
Questions

I am drunk i argue with somebody who is also drunk i throw my boobs in his face and ask him" do you want this do you want this "
He goes ahead and rapes me and says sorry afterwards

1. I should learn to control myself when drunk hence i got what i deserved
2. I threw myself at him hence he had a right
3. He said sorry so i should also apologise for saying do you want this i provoked him.
Violence is any way is violence no matter how small or minor...
