Created in 2002 by British charity Comic Relief and BBC Sport, Sport Relief is a biennial charity event that brings together the worlds of sport and entertainment to raise money and support for vulnerable people from all over the world.

At the heart of the campaign is the Sport Relief Mile, an event open to everyone - regardless of athletic prowess or mobility.

This year South Africa will join the cause as the first Sport Relief Cape Town Mile takes place at the V & A Waterfront on 21 March.

The event features a 1, 3 or 5 Mile race (you can choose according to your stamina), with all proceeds going to Child Welfare South Africa. Anyone can enter (see more info on how to get involved below).

BBC Entertainment will be in the action on Sunday and will be broadcasting a special two-hour show featuring all the highlights from the day - in the evening at 19h30.

The show will provide information about the charitable work funded by Sport Relief round the world, putting the Cape Town event into the context of Sport Relief’s history and includes interviews with celebrities, sports stars and other participants doing their bit to help in the Mother City.

Ex-England and Newcastle Captain Alan Shearer, OBE and double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes will be on hand to introduce footage from UK Sport Relief which takes place two days before.

Also on the show: Sir Michael Parksinson will put in an appeal from the UK and footage of Eddie Izzard who challenged himself to run 43 marathons in 51 days. Starting in Trafalgar Square on 9 September 2009, Eddie covered more than 1,100 miles through England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

If you'd like to get involved - either by entering the race or dropping by to see who's made it and who's collapsed, all the info is available on the Sport Relief website: Sport Relief Mile South Africa.
