2010 Matric Results & Uni Application Chaos

Its January Matric results have come out and Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga announced that 2010s pass rate has increased to 67.8% compared to 2009s 60.6% pass rate. Despite all the obstacles that learners had to face last year they managed to pass and make a 67.8% of Grade12's pass rate for 2010. Government is happy with these results as they were aiming for 70% since 2009.

In all this there are 18 schools who got 0% and some provinces pass rate has decreased while others increased. This pass rate came as a surprise to many people judging by the events that occurred during the year 2010, events that caused learners to have a short period of time to be taught at school.

There was a public servants strike that took almost two months and there was also a Fifa 2010 Soccer World Cup that also took a month. During the public servants strike learners spent a month without being taught. They were also given a full month holiday, which is more than the usual June holiday they normally get. During all these holidays some learners took time to go to school to catch up on their school work and some didn't.

Many people thought this is one of the things that is going to cause the class of 2010 to have poor pass rate but surprisingly it's even higher that 2009s, which didn't have much drama. While Minister of Basic Education and her fellows were celebrating this higher pass rate, Sowetan journalist was doing his own counting in which he revealed that government counted wrong.

He came up with results that state 2010s pass rate is actually 59% not 67.8% as it was shown to us by Minister of Basic Education, Mrs Angie Motshekga. But Minister of Basic Education is sticking to her 67.8%. So do you smell a rat with these results or you think learners really worked hard with all the challenges they were facing in 2010, and that the Sowetan journalist is just creating drama.

Now with all this high pass rate many learners want to be admitted in institutions of higher education, meaning Universities. There seems to be many learners that didn't apply in the middle of 2010 judging by what we see happening at University of Johannesburg.

We all know that one of the reasons that cause learners to apply in January is poor marks of the June report or September report. So could this mean that most of these learners only passed the final exams hence they are applying now or they only decided now that they want to go to university?

Out of all the Universities that we have in South Africa there seems to be one popular University with learners, which is the University of Johannesburg. I have never seen what I've been seeing happening at UJ, learners in very long queues like its 1994 voting and causing chaos inside and outside the university.

This got me thinking, why all these learners choose to flock to the University of Johannesburg, while there are other universities in SA. There is also Wits University that is also in Johannesburg and I didn't see any chaos there or it is because the media is only interested in UJ.

So I thought what could be causing all this chaos at University of Johannesburg. Is it because of its popularity or is it because it gives one some sort of class or it’s simple because learners want to study in the best University that they know?

With all this there seems to be other things that this University is popular of, some people even call it the University of Jezabels. Well we hope this chaos is mostly caused by best education that the University of Johannesburg offers.

So do you smell a rat with these results or you think learners really worked hard with all the challenges they were facing in 2010

What i know is that when people are faced with challenges, or when everyone is expecting them to be a failure. there is a tendency to work even harder to just prove a point. Its like you have to show the naysayers that you can do it and be the best.  My thoughts are that these learners knew all these, and they worked extra hard to improve the pass rates.

Otherwise how would you explain that the students are flooding campuses, and universities are not begging students to come register. There are enough passes, and the universitities didnt allocate enough vacancies as they always estimate the number of passes and reserve admissions for only a few.

UJ 's popularity

Bear in mind that this UJ, is a combination of what was previously know as Wits Tech (which had three campuses) RAU, and Vista (I think).

For as long as I remeber Wits Tech has always been as popular as Vaal Tech, and known for its fashion sense. So most students wants to be where life is.

It was rumoured that the Kingsway Campus has a lot of racism, but I think things have changed. In comparison to Wits Univ. and UCT, UJ is still the cheapest and that could be another reason why students are being encouraged by their parents to enroll there.

They have not compromised on quality as far as Commerce is concerned, as they are still producing high numbers for SAICA exams and their Postgraduate studies in the field of tax are the highly recognised in the Tax field.

It is my belief that if you apply while u are in matric, whether they accept you or not, when you go for them self registrations you have a better foot than those who are coming for the first time..... I do not understand why kids insist on not applying and running arround in january. And again, in grade 11, kids must be told and taught to work hard so they get results that will get the preliminary acceptance. I just do not appreciate the caos that happens in january in varsities, i think it is avoidable, if only we did not have such complacency in our kids, or the people that are supposed to be encouraging them.

Why UJ?...i agree with the reasons nice highlighted. Although the Commerce quality/SAICA exam numbers etc is more interesting to read/hear. Im not a commerce person, i just have a lot of freinds who did/do BAcc/Bcomt. And i have Curious question: Over the years, ive seen many who have struggled with their CTAs(i believe they call it) at wits move to UJ were they mostly passed. Ive always been curious as whether wits is just impossibly difficult with their honoirs programme or whethre they deliever it poorly, whether its racism etc, while UJ would be the opposite of that. Whats going on there, do you have an idea nice? at this stage, i would not advice any kid i know to do BAcc at wits, ive seen way to many tears and depressed individuals there....

"For as long as I remeber Wits Tech has always been as popular as Vaal Tech, and known for its fashion sense. So most students wants to be where life is."

lol a colleague said this to me yesterday when we were discussing the influx of students toUJ

Part of me was stunned by the results, however like Nice said another part of me felt that they had to work extra hard to pass and there was lots of support from all sectors of the community, national and regional radio stations (Ukhozi FM had a matric feature during their afternoon drive-time show), people volunteered to provide extra tutorials, websites were put in place and cell phone downloading stuff was put in place with matric questions and answers, everybody rallied behind, maybe that is why....

as for late applications, hhayi what happened to applying a year before with your grade 11 and grade 12 June exams. Even if you are not sure of your results, you apply at more than one institution, when you receive your results you go the the one one based on your results.

Unless these students did not pass grade 11 satisfactory and grade 12 June results were also not good, I'll understand and also go back to questioning the overall matric pass rate...

Mrs Angie Motshekga. But Minister of Basic Education is sticking to her 67.8%. So do you smell a rat with these results or you think learners really worked hard with all the challenges they were facing in 2010, and that the Sowetan journalist is just creating drama.

There are some shembles in the education system in this country as per the following quote from The Times in today's edition. For example: principal A enrols 10 candidates and five pass, giving a pass rate of 50%; principal B holds back risky candidates, enrolling seven, and four pass, giving a pass rate of 57%. B is praised for the higher pass rate, but he enrolled and passed fewer candidates.

There is also Wits University that is also in Johannesburg and I didn't see any chaos there or it is because the media is only interested in UJ.
Yes, the media is only interested in City schools and varsities.

A lot of matrics don't apply during th year and only start to show interest in varsity soon after matric results are released and you will remember that practically over 90% of spaces at varsities are already full. So, this means a lot of matrics will not be going to universities at least until June or next year.

Lemme see what other bloggers are saying.

12 Jan 2011 11:46

I just read your comments, I hear your points. I didn't know most of the stuff about UJ and that it is cheap. All this time I thought it is in the same standard as UCT as UCT is an expensive university that I know, my bad.

Mna I just find it a bit dodgy that the results would be this high after everything that happened in 2010.Its even worse there are 18 schools with a 0% but still the results increased?! The Western Cape and Gauteng's pass rate decreased even though Gauteng is number one for 2010 results but it's results also decreased compared to 2009's.

Yes there are other provinces that made a small difference in thier results compared to 2009 results but still I have some uncertanity about these results. Because we know that Grade 12 learners do not only need the final exams to pass Matric. The work that they do during the year also counts, this is only if what we see happening in UJ is caused by that learners didnt have good results for June and September.

So if they didn't do well in the middle of 2010 how come they do well in the final exams. But ke maybe learners did work extra hard and the help they got from media and everywhere really helped.

I would like to pass my congratulations to those matriculants of 2010 for their excellent results. But I have doubts about the credibility of the outcomes despite Umalusi being the independent body that accredits the results. Umalusi can be an independent body but it is governed by people and anything that is controlled by a human being can be changed. All in the sundry have seen the downs of 2010 especially on the side of matriculants. The extended winter vacations due to soccer world cup and the disruptions by the public servants’strike had a negative impact on the learners. The learners might have got winter classes and so forth but still they were lagging behind. Again it was said that one of the final exam papers was high pitched and that meant marks were adjusted. I also heard something about 9 or 10% adjustment of the final marks.I believe and know that not even one soul expected the pass rate to improve significantly so. The national pass rate and of some provinces are very questionable. We can be happy about the improvement but are we really excited about the quality of the results. Most of those learners are heading to different tertiary institutions and the big question is WILL THEY BE ABLE TOCOPE THERE??

Anyone here who knows someone who  can assist my sister with enrolment at UJ, please hook me up.  She has been stuck in those queues since Monday but she says today's one is better.  She needs to go to UJ becauce it produces top results for CTA exams, just as nice has indicated.

12 Jan 2011 12:24

@GA

Its true that people struggle at Wits and UCT, and when they move to UJ , UNISA or KZN they seem to do better. I dont know what the reason is

Finished my B.Acc at WIts and did a board course conducted by UJ and UCT lectures, to tell you the truth I did not see the difference in all three of them. Each university praises itself for being the best. Its like the competition between banks, who would you say is the best between the big four banks?

Maybe its the method of lecturing, but I believe the standard is the same because we all write the same SAICA exams, and UJ has more entrants than the other two and produces good results.

The only real difference is in the quality of distant learning and full time learning, as distance learners struggle with those exams.

hhayi what happened to applying a year before with your grade 11 and grade 12 June exams?

Poshspice
, its the money that is the problem

Do you know that you pay at least R200 to apply to the tertiary institutions, so some people cant afford to apply on provisional results and that could be the reason why they wait for the matric results to be released.

I was one of the students that waited till the release to apply, I didnt want to risk the money and I was just lucky that I did super well, and got admission easily. I think if they considered everyone's application without that fee, a lot of people will apply with their Grade 11 results. If you apply to for institutions you could easily need to fork out R1 000. To many of us that is a lot of money, and some cant afford it.

I hear you nice, and a Bbig congradulations on the heights you achieved sisi:).

And i igree, the application fee issue needs to be reviewed.
When i applied for varsity i could only afford one application fee, and ironically of all the application i wanted to sent through, wits was the cheapest, was R90 if i recall. My teacher sponsored that and i couldnt ask for anymore. And i was also lucky i got taken for that one application that i could afford.....my plan B was unisa.

Else, schools must do fundraisors to help matriculants send application forms, i personally will pass this to my gals and we'll see how we can make it happen at our old schools. But really ntate Blade le Juju, they need to be blowing off steam through their noses regarding this issue....come to think of it.!

Hi yall

My opinion :The reason why there is flocking at this university is yes the fees are low and due to the lowered pass marks and standard of education majority passed with a university entrance so mina I will just grab a bowl of popcorn and await the 1st year drop out stats

Green.arrow

Haven't read the comments

On you question why students are folking to UJ it's because WIts has increased their score point for accepting students and most of them qualify o study Education hence they all went to UJ

I just hope they get admitted other than going to Wits to study something that they don' like and I don't appreciate what Wits is doing to choose which career path you should take because students end up frustrated.

Yes there are those students who are from very impoverished backgrounds, but really, looking at the hairstyles and clothes these students wear and can afford, even from RDP, shacks surely they can save R20-50 a month to pay the application fee...
I honestly feel when you are a student, you shoudl be able to sacrifice some pocket money for such things......

Yep, my thoughts too, they are smart and thought they'll deal with aunt Angie, if she thinks she will impose 'half-cooked' students on them.

But Wits is rated among the best universities with UCT, Stellebosch, while UJ ranking has dropped...well where there are more blacks, standard drops...wonder why?

12 Jan 2011 14:36

The reason you see long queues is because all the students need to submit their Statement of Results to the institutions, if not they cannot register. Not all who applied in 2010 made it or qualify for entry at HEI

Thank you GA

On that note, when one's results arent good enoughand a person wont settle for the next available option. do you know of any good places to upgrade the matric symbols?

what is the procedure for registration, and eventually once you have impoved the marks how do you consolidate the matric statemenets /certificates to show the new results?

lejazz
12 Jan 2011 14:48

The reason most learners do not apply a year prior to the year they will be studying it is because of the non-refundable admission fee amounting from R150 to R200.So for most of the learners it is difficult to pay that amount to different institutions especially if you do not have guarantee that you will be admitted.

As for the overflowing of learners in UJ is purely because of the fees compared to Wits. And most of students in UJ are busy with diplomas and the only thing they are good at fashion and parties nothing else.Honestly speaking universities which are flocked by blacks are not performing well academically. We do not hear of over-flowing of students in Stellenbosch,UP,Wits etc....but the likes of Univen,UL,UKZN,UNIZUL,TUT are not coping

Wits provides outstanding quality in education and it accepts quite a limited number of students .

Guys do not you dare compare UJ with UCT...UCT is among top 500 universities in the world and UJ is nowhere on that list.UCT is expensive, provides high quality of education and has one of the finest academics.

There is "stars school" ( http://www.starschools.co.za/  )for that, thats the top one credidble institution i know for such upgrades (imo) and subsequent admin. I believe even Unisa affords such an opportunity. These two im certain off because ive helped some kids with them last year, dont imagine anything changing in a year. I believe on their respective websites you can get all details.

LOL at all this speculation. there are looooooong ass queues at Wits, it's just that the queues are inside a building and hidden from public view. someone told me that the deposit required at UJ is less than that required ko Wits but in the end UJ is more exp cause the deposit paid is NOT offset against the final tuition due....

well where there are more blacks, standard drops...wonder why? ....brutal question Posh, with answers that may seem obvious at times and so dismisable. But a question that Blad needs to be scrutinising and doing all to fix it. Just as Mme Angie should be scrutinising the question why private schools had 2% failure rate while public schools had over 30% failure rate. I thought it was ridiculous calling the pass rate increase a "whooping" 7.2... "whooping" ???..and we wonder why the students also aim low and have to be in positions of settling for "education.....wits tendencies aside.
PS:....the new system pass rates are now 30%???...as if 33% wasnt terribly low enough.?...eish, but i lenna wasnt complaining when i was in matric and that was the status quo...lol

This is an article from yesterday's The Citizen.  It explains the chaos at UJ and the application process of Wits University.

JOHANNESBURG - Thousands of prospective students who braved the long queues at University of Johannesburg (UJ) campuses may not be accepted. The university said yesterday it could place only 13 000 new entrants.

UJ spokesman Herman Esterhuizen believed one of the main reasons for the large number of applicants was the wide range of courses offered at the university, including national diploma’s and Bachelor Degrees.

Another major factor was the increase in the number of National Senior Certificate holders who obtained university admission in the 2010 examinations. Last year 126 371 matriculants qualified for admission to bachelor degrees.

On Monday Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande announced the number of learning opportunities at tertiary institutions had increased by 56%.

“The number of learning opportunities in 2011 will increase by a further 103 940, bringing the total opportunities to be created in 2011 to 288 487,” he said.

The University of Witwatersrand’s head of enrolment centre Carol Crosley said they were not experiencing high volumes of late registrations.

“Although we have opened for late registrations, we operate on a smaller scale with only certain courses opened, like our Education School for instance, while our engineering courses are full,” she said. Wits also has strict criteria for a number of their courses. Crosley said Wits’ new intake of 2010 would only be about
5 500.

Wits head of communications Sharona Patel said they also had a different administration system to other universities.

“We have a different system which updates student applications online after the matric results and this makes it a lot easier for students. So they don’t have to stand in long queues,” she add.

Esterhuizen said UJ had received
63 400 applications for 2011 first year undergraduate studies in the application period last year.

“We selected 17 500 students based on their grade 11 results and they were given conditional acceptance,” said Esterhuizen.

On Monday the university opened its doors for late registration and thousands of students flocked to the campuses.

Esterhuizen said these students would fill in late registration forms to complete and the university would check whether they met the requirements.

He said students would receive a response within 48 hours informing them about their application process. Esterhuizen said the university would check whether they have space available in the courses applied for.

Students stood in long queues from the early hours of Monday morning and returned yesterday, hoping to be accepted.

Vladimir Georgie from Bryanston was among the students hoping to get a chance to register.

“I have been standing in the queue since Monday and again today(Tuesday) from 4am this morning. It’s been frustrating but I guess you have to endure this if you left everything to the last minute,” he said.

Another student in the queue was Nthabiseng Hamisi from Witbank in Mpumalanga. She said she had been standing in the queue since Monday and had been waiting for feedback from the university since last year.

Last week trade union Solidarity said six out of 10 matriculants would not be able to find a job.

In an interview with Moneyweb this week, Adcorp’s CEO Richard Pike said nine out of 10 matrics would be unemployed.

@ Baby e

LOL, I find that a little hard to swallow as Wits uses student numbers only to identify students and in most cases your name will not even be required in scripts. I have always believed that WIts is better at keeping anonimity than UJ.

At UJ, the student number allocated is not used much and in most exam scripts the name was the most dominant, and placed one at a disadvantage should their script end up in the hands of the racist, either black or white.

Poshspice, I also wonder why the people that determines the standard, (eish hope you can make sense of this)  drops it when the place has a lot of black people. Because educators remain the same and all that changes are the students. I suspect the Moody's, Standard and Poors of this country are bias towards white in some instances

@ Nice - where i studied, students numbers were used but i had one lecturer who knew mine and would tell me my results before everyone knew.

It's 2011 now, +/-16yrs after apartheid but you still find Black folks hiding their failures behind racism. Come 5011 we will still be playing a race card! My question is for how long?

I was a Wits student at one point and have never experienced what babye is insinuating. I've got friends who had studied at UCT and had obtained 100% in quite a few subjects and guess what? They are Black.

Do you really think Wits would be so stupid to give a BSc to some dump-ass because s/he is related to a certain person? Whats gonna happen when that kid is given an MBA, BSc etc, s/he goes to the work place and knows nothing about that particular field? Wits will definately lose credibility.

13 Jan 2011 10:13

Mathaz, what I would advise you to do is check first on the online brochure if your sister qualifies for a Bcom / BAcc and add up her score

If she meets the criteria then walk to the Student Enrolment Centre, with her, copy of the matric statement, and try to apply. If she qualifies, and there are vacancies they will take her. I know the phone is convinient but it doesnt always work out best.

when did you graduate and which course? i am not hiding through racism - its there and will always be there. my friend deserved to be the best student in their programme and guess what she didnt get it because someone whose dad plays golf with the lectures and is also into mining made sure his daughter passes. and the best student was to automatically start her masters the following year. my friend is trying so hard to enrol for her masters and they are making it so hard for her even though her grades are good and has a sponsor.

If she meets the criteria then walk to the Student Enrolment Centre, with her, copy of the matric statement, and try to apply. If she qualifies, and there are vacancies they will take her. I know the phone is convinient but it doesnt always work out best.

Thank you, thank you Nice! Keeping it in mind that there's a lot of competition as well. If they have 100 spaces available and they receive 100 applications from students who passed all their subjects with A's and your sister comes with C, D, F, G and H's obviously she won't be accepted.

my friend is trying so hard to enrol for her masters and they are making it so hard for her even though her grades are good and has a sponsor.

I won't even entertain this because it's a lie. If your friend has met all the requirements of studying the Masters there's no other way she can be stopped from doing it. We got people here in SA with Masters from overseas Universities, are you trying to say their fathers play golf with the lecturers?

Black people remember being black is not an achievement and it doesn't give you access to study at any institution except your results.

Happy new year everyone.

here is my take on the issue: I think these students were given free marks to make up for the teachers strike. furthermore, Angie was under pressure cos the IEB produced almost a perfect score and as such didnt want to appear as a failure. this, in my speculations, led to thousands of kids getting marks that they never thought they would obtain, leading to last minute registrations.

as for the lines: the new system that automatically tells students that they qualify for a diploma, higher certificate or whatever maybe the case ruined these kids as Universities such as wits and UCT don not offer diplomas and certificates at undergrad level. leaving UJ with the burden.

On money: yes Wits is ruthless. they pay R7600 for an upfront payment fees as compared to R3350 at UJ.

This whole matter reaks of dodginess There's an influx of students becos sum of those who were certain they had flunked baring testimony of their results 4 the 1st 3 semesters miraculously passed their finals. Will universities award them xtra marks to push them 4 a pass? What's the point of pushing students to pass school only 2 be slaughtered @ vasity when school fees are a lot cheaper than vasity fees. What will happen when the "pushed" students flunk? However...... If 67.8% is the final mark & you deduct the IEB 98% it means only 37.7% of govt pupils passed. So, govt must xplain.

Or is the 67.8% for govt schools only? If so we have been punked. hehehe...
