The explosive showcase started with the fiery Top 6 showcase of Fall Out Boy’s “My songs know what you did in the dark”.
The song choreographed by Somizi was a perfect start to a sizzling show of music and dance. Let’s take a look at the front runners and the followers.
Zeo steals the show: I could swear the screamometer reader broke after Zoe’s performance of Jessie J’s “Wild”. Amidst an auditorium full of avid #TeamMusa stans Zoe still managed to get insanely loud appreciation. Her stage presence and entertainment factor defeated everyone’s. She allowed her energy, fire and passion to take centre stage. She brought everything and conquered.
Sonke’ star rises Zulu-crowned Sowetan with a golden-voice Makhosonke stole what Zoe left for the rest. Sonke took on Mafikizolo’s mega-hit “Khona” and slammed every bar that makes up that song. His performance which was further spiced by choreographer Somizi joining in on stage left every hand clapping, every mouth screaming and shouting with excitement.
Musa goes via Orlando One could have sworn the entire auditorium was a political canvass of dedicated #TeamMusa cadres. The groups spread across the venue sang and shouted Musa’s name throughout the show, while holding up banners showing the Idol’s face. Musa who chose the flamboyant Dr Malinga’s popular song “Via Orlando” made the vocals sound easy. He avoided the infamous Malinga kicks and stage jumps, but threw in a few teases of some of the wild Malinga moves which further excited his many fans.
Bunny raises the bar If you thought Bunny was just a big girl with a big voice then you haven’t seen nothing. Singing Pink’s number “Raise your glass”, she jumped, hopped, danced and SANG. I equate her performance to Musa’s. One would think she’d run out of breath and mess up the vocals but she maintained her tone and stayed afloat… I would still like to see her through the Top 4 mark but having seen everyone, Bunny might be in the bottom three.
Brenden’s fading continues
This is one contender I never thought he’d possibly fall in the bottom three, but after his performance of Zahara’s “Lengoma” I became worried. While everyone went on stage with blasters, it looked like the Witbank-born Idol took it easy and went the safe route. I’m not sure if Brenden’s curtain is slowly falling off the rail, but he needs to stay consistent and bring the funk back. He MIGHT possibly join Bunny and Crystalene.
Crystalene drops the ball Dressed in a black sexy short frock and hair resembling that of a popstar, Crystalene could have owned the night. She had a powerful song with good choreography but performance-wise her version of Rihanna’s “Right now” failed to dazzle. She should have brought Riri’s sexiness to the stage but she went way too safe and as a result, she might be in the bottom three and possibly go home.
