NOTE: The TV Observer does not encourage violence or physical abuse. This blog is a pure reflection on fighting scenes on television following the broadcast of Rhythm City’s fight scene.
I often find it interesting at how shows avoid fight scenes, even if it’s between two people. I am not talking about a "HOSTEL - the movie" type violence. I thought they avoided them because the actors are bad at simulating the fights, as we saw with Parsons and Vusi on Isidingo most recently.
Don't threaten... throw a punch Vusi. It lacked much needed force to warrant the tension and circumstances.
But Rhythm City delivered a great scene on the subject and those boys went all out. The camera and directing allowed the audience to get equally terrified and scared at the antics of township boys with cultural weapons whilst murders and prison alumni’s went head to weapon to showcase their manhood.
Don’t forget that Krynauw and Braam over at Egoli once had a great fight scene. Mind you they were all alone in their apartment during the fight with no one to stop them. They blaksemed each other to hell and back. And they really had a heated one because both guys gave as much as they got. I thought the scene (with the full knowledge that it is fake) was designed very well for our entertainment. Although such violence in real life is not a funny matter!
All it took was one look and he took Mr. Cultural weapons down
Fighting on our screens is so rear, but very active in our societies. However I think shows need to have an indication that such violence is not good. Despite the entertainment factor, they should show consequences within the same storyline.
It would be nice to see Karabo and Khethiwe fight like those township ladies in real life. I think they is too much tension and the bad looks are not cutting it. We need a blow by blow moment. That would be so crazy, but fun as ever. Who would you like to see win that fight?
Besides the KK' (Karabo and Khethiwe), which television characters would you like to see get into it. Fighting I mean.
As I read your fighting scene comments, I will be enjoying a chocolate covered Sally Williams nougat. I think I need to go to rehab.....
