BB Africa 2 : Shocking Scandal Silenced

Written by Amazingly from the blog My Side Of The Screen on 02 Nov 2007

Try as I might I cannot get over it.

I have read the Official Big Brother/M-Net Statement and I am appalled at the manner in which the whole Richard-Ofuneka saga is being treated.

Edmund Burke said "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

And that’s what we’re doing. Nothing.

Worse, some people are making as if the whole incident is Nothing and voting for Richard as the winner.

Is it any wonder that our country, our continent, is filled with various violent attacks against women? When people can turn a blind eye against what they know in their heart of hearts is wrong.

Do they really not care?

He took his hand and invaded her while she was unable to do anything, unaware even. And just because she doesn’t know it happened, does not make it right.
What is going to happen when she sees the footage?

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

If Big Brother really had no problems with what Richard did, then why was he removed and locked up in the diary room?

Are they afraid the ratings that will drop if they remove him? Are they worried about the scandal it will cause? The law suits?

What is it that has driven them to do nothing?

What is it that has driven them to turn a blind eye to one of the most despicable acts one human being can do to another?

Am I being over-sensitive?

How far does one human being have to go before it’s considered indecent assault, or heaven-forbid I use the word rape?

Crime is a huge factor in our country. When our houses are broken into, when our cars stolen, when people are murdered, we all have our say. Openly.

Why is it then that no-one wants to talk about this? Why has Big Brother/M-Net silenced the SMS’s, message boards that speak out against Richard? Why are we doing nothing?

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."

Blame goes first and foremost to Richard.

Richard has continuously behaved disrespectfully toward women. His wife, Tatiana, Ofuneka and the other housemates as well.

Secondly, I blame Big Brother. The situation got out of hand and they temporarily removed him. But they let him back in again when what they should have done is kicked him out. They should have shamed him instead of heaping praise on him.

If Richard does win, then God help us. Because who else will?

Big Brother might be watching. But he's not  doing a damn thing.

'And that’s what we’re doing. Nothing.'
I quote from a sms response to Meme J's column  (props to Meme J - your columns are keeping it real..) 'If we turn a blind eye to it and keep silent, we are saying we approve of what Richard did.'
Can't agree more... our mere silence spells approval. Because Biggy did not speak to Richard or even touched on the incident... that tells Richard that his behavior is OK.

I can't help wondering about the women who find Richard attractive.  He has the mentality of a 13 year old...  Is it a mother complex thing.. or what is it?  I really can't understand the admiration and obsession that intelligent strong African women have with Richard.  I do hope, in my heart, that the women who are supporting Richard are teenagers with overactive hormones. . If not, like you said, Amazingly… then may God help us.

'Am I being over-sensitive?'
Richard’s disillusioned followers would think so. But no, you are not. I watched the sick episode on Saturday. And I was already enraged when he started shouting at the three women that he is going to bump them all.. and how Tatiana wants now to move to Zanzibar because of his famous gazunga (sp?) . And nothing about his voice or body language assured me that he was only ‘joking’.
I wanted BB to remove he there and then… least did I know that it would escalate.

'Secondly, I blame Big Brother. The situation got out of hand and they temporarily removed him. But they let him back in again when what they should have done is kicked him out. They should have shamed him instead of heaping praise on him.'

If they remove him, they acknowledge his wrongdoing. And they can’t afford it. I agree with you that that they are responsible as well. The way I see it that they are too blame because they should anticipated Richard’s behavior because
- Richard demonstrated consistently total disregard and disrespect for women
- Richard threatened the women that he was going to ‘bump’ them all… why did they not intervene then? Are they really watching 24/7.. or do they merely have ‘camera operators’? Remember, Maureen throw chairs around… nobody intervened. Why? Maybe because nobody was around to intervene immediately

Ofunneka was drunk.. yes. However, she did get intoxicated like that in a SAFE environment with people that she TRUSTS.
BB failed her… he failed to protect her. Richard took advantage of her trust.

Richard is a *bleep!* asshole.  That "Africa" thinks he's such a hero says all too much about the way women are regarded on this continent and what an absolute disgrace it all is.

It's irritating to think that Offuneka has now lost some support because of what happened.  It's like people can't see the situation for what it is and instead are supporting the wrong person (Richard) for all the wrong reasons.

I have only one word to describe Richard, PERVERT. i didn't have a problem with him before because as human beings we're all fallible.  I thought the thing with Tatiana was one of those "dynamic situations"  that take a life of their own and you can't really do anything about it but the truth is just that he can't keep his hands off any woman.

Recall how Code used to go off on Maureen because he was feeling threatened by Richard.

Exactly Yuri.
Ofunneka is now getting blamed for something vile Richard did....

Because BB in his sick mind thought that  what Richard was doing was in the name of entertainment. It is really sad indeed. I still cannot understand why some of the women are still voting for the guy.

Secondly, I blame Big Brother. The situation got out of hand and they temporarily removed him. But they let him back in again when what they should have done is kicked him out. They should have shamed him instead of heaping praise on him.

Judging by the response the show would have been a flop since the remaining housemates would not attract significant viewership. If the viewership were that significant believe me Richard would have removed from the BB house.

Crime is a huge factor in our country. When our houses are broken into, when our cars stolen, when people are murdered, we all have our say. Openly.

You know what we say in this country? With the excdeption of murder At least they did not kill you.

Since Maureen is out of the house and all...has anyone heard what she had to say about this issue?? Meme J, do your thang gal...

Women should know now not to get drunk anywhere near Richard.  He isn't the kind of guy that's going to see you safely home.  He'll repay your trust with rape dollars.

Read an article on the Saturday Star today. They were given an exclusive viewing of the tape and according to them (journalists) & some organisation against women abuse, after viewing the recording, they are conviced that Richard did nothing wrong. Ofuneka was pulling him, rubbing herself against him and whatever happened between them was consensual. Maybe there are 2 Big Brother Africa houses after all coz everyone comes with a different story.

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THAT TAPE, SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!! If this was America, that incident would be on YOUTUBE!!!!!

Amazingly
04 Nov 2007 02:25

Apparently it all started even before the room incident - in the lounge , which i did not see.
Also same person who told me this said that in the week Richard told Ofunneka and tati what he did and Ofunnekka was crying about it in the bathroom. He later told then he was only joking, that he didnt really do anything.
so he knows what he did.

I agree about the youtube thingy Shuga - we need to see the entire "episode" and not just snippets thereof.

<<Also same person who told me this said that in the week Richard told Ofunneka and tati what he did and Ofunnekka was crying about it in the bathroom>>
He told them that he and Ofuneka kissed, not about the fingergate thing...that's why Tati was mad at him. Coz she found out about the kissing..

Heya all. Hey, Brown Shuga, if the footage supposedly shows that Richard "did nothing wrong", can't help wondering why BBA did not repeat it on their Uncut shows this weekend? Surely it would have been in BB's interest, and the show's, if it exonerates them and Richard? I didn't see it all, but there were different segments. Btw, did the reps of women's organisations issue a statement after seeing the recording to say it wasn't abuse? Just so you know, apropos of the infamous Saturday, someone e-mailed our newsdesk yesterday spewing forth vile racist bile against BBA, the BBA producers, myself and fellow BBA columnists on our newspaper! Let me just say that if we published some of what he said, it would lead to prosecution under the Racial Discrimination Act.

Meme J

Hey Shuga and Sego, pse let me know if you're going to be at the BBA finale?!

Brown Shuga

Who sent you the racist MemeJ? And why? I am not missing the finale for anything...will be there!!!

That's cool! Do you need an 'Untouchable' t-shirt?! Enjoy for me too. Unfortunately looks like I won't make it, as our Editor will be out of the country ... that's now confirmed. But Natasha from our newspaper will definitely be down. .......... The rabid racism is from a man who is not a born Namibian or African. Think he's British. As far as I know he's a lecturer at our university. He is quite a regular letter writer and known to have a bit of a nasty streak. How I wish this whole Sat thing had never happened! I really struggled to write my contributions last week. .......... And, oh yes, go claim yourself some commission from Destiny magazine! Read your article, it was obviously embedded in my mind, saw it in a shop and picked up copy. The power of persuasion!!!

<<That's cool! Do you need an 'Untouchable' t-shirt?!>>  Yeah, please organize me one so i can BURN it in front of them! LOL

That British guy is a mo'fo!!!!

<<go claim yourself some commission from Destiny magazine!>> LOL, I've emailed Khanyi the invoice....

Journalists and some organisation against women abuse found no wrong from Richard' actions. Should that be taken as fact and conclude that richard did nothing wrong? In my opinion I do not think so. If legally they conclude that richard did nothing wrong then Richard would have been vindicated.

Amazingly, thank you so much for the write-up. I can assure you we have not heard the last about that incident, especially if Richard goes ahead to win. People are just waiting for the show to end on Sunday. As I see things, the organizers of the show are programming Richard to win instead of kicking him out of the showt wo Saturdays ago.

What amazes me is the amount of mis-information posted by people who did not even see the incident. I was at home the whole of that Saturday with my tv permanently tuned to Channel 198 and I saw how the whole disgraceful events startred unfolding and how it ended.

The organizers ought to have stepped in when Richard went totally mad. At the time he was screaming about how he was left with 3 women and he was going to bump the three of them. He was talking a whole lot of rubbish. He then put words into action. He carried Tatiana into the bedroom and was vigorously trying to remove her jeans amidst feeble pleas by a drunk Tatiana. He listened to her pleas only because they just made up from a quarrel they had the previous day. Then he chased Maureen round the hoiuse to bump her, but she managged to handle the situation because she was not as drunk as the others. Then he returned to the sitting-room to lie on top of Offuneka that had completely passsed out.

The scene moved to the bedroom, where Richard went and laid in between Offuneka and Tatiana. Both ladies had completely passed out. Richard laid facing Tatiana and then put one of his arms backward, pulling at Offuneka's pants. He then penetrated her with his fingers. All these happened before the final scene that everyone is talking about. Even when the paramedics arrived, they seemed to be enjoying the show, rather than take action.

The matter has not been swept under the carpet, trust me. We are only waiting for the show to end.
