Thandiswa Mazwai like you've never heard b4

Written by mjj from the blog Music on TV : Music Lounge on 13 Feb 2009

This article won’t make sense because I’m writing with excitement……

Tha4

I manage to get hold of THE album to have in 2009 …..After calling almost 10 Musica stores around Pretoria, I found 1 store that had only 1 copy of the much anticipated sophomore album of Thandiswa Mazwai titled “Ibokwe”…..

Whoever was driving next to me on my way home…probably thought I was drunk……I couldn’t drive straight as a result of my excitement……..by the time I got home I had only listened to 5 tracks of the 9-track album…..And I knew I had to write a review about this album…my excitement ended when I figured that there was no way I could translate most of the Xhosa lyrics into English……but luckily for me the CD sleeve offered some explanation/story about each track…..

Tha5
On her interview with Penny from MetroFM early Jan 2008, she mentioned that she did not feel any pressure to deliver an album better than Zabalaza…she went further by saying her sophomore album (untitled then) should not be compared to Zabalaza because it was a different album and she was a different person when Zabalaza was recorded 5 years ago.

Tha4

From the Cover or CD sleeve, I could tell that this is Thandiswa like we’ve never seen/heard her before…….always pushing boundaries. The graphics of the cover are Awesome….The Front cover tells the story of Mzantsi people, the Jozi skyline, the Soweto towers, amakhwenkwe abuya entabeni…..amagqirha entlombeni with the wording….THE PEOPLE SHALL GOVERN…..

Tha3

The back of the CD sleeve shows young people Toy-toying, playing drums and singing….There’s a lot one can pickup from the CD cover…History majors can create a beautiful story from the CD sleeve…….

I’m not sure how will other people receive this Album, but if ungum Xhosa; there’s no way you won’t like this album. It takes you back home (if uhlala edolophini), I just couldn’t help think about the day ndandibuya entabeni, I could see young and old dancing and rejoicing about my home coming. If you grew up in an area with Traditional doctors (Amagqirha), you will just be taken to “one” of their gatherings (Intlombe)….Picture them singing, dancing, drinking Smirnoff and smoking isnafe(sp)……There’s no way you can listen to the album while sitting down……

That being said…Music is a universal language…I don’t think you have to know Xhosa to appreciate this album…

Thandiswa is the Producer of the Album and co-Producer is Thapelo Khomo. Thapelo used to be a backing vocalist for Bayete and is an accomplished Producer. I’m not sure if Sipho Sithole (Producer of Zabalaza) played a role on this album.

Tha7
This is my proof that i bought the album

This is only a 9 track album…I’m very disappointed at Miss Mazwai; she could have done better….but that is just a minor inconvenience…….

Track 1: Thongo Lam (Iyeza) – A person with a calling to be a traditional healer sometimes suffers from a kind of madness as a sign of her/his calling. In this song a person begs for medicine to take away the madness. The song reminds me of my teen years when I was in a traditional dancing group…..

Track 2 – Ibokwe (Goat) – title track – This is a song about resolve, determination to react. A goat is used a lot in cultural rituals. The song voices determination to take care of a certain problem without ritual involving a goat. This one reminds me of the woman staying opp my grandmother’s house when she used to curse all her husband’s nyantsi’s.

Track 3 – Ngimkhonzile feat her daughter Malaika reading the Freedom Charter principles – The song tells people that Freedom is a right worth fighting for. Sorry Ms Mazwai – I found the song boring except Malaika’s reading…..

Track 4 – Ingoma feat Bra Hugh (1st Single) – The song ends abruptly because like love a song can end unexplainably as it starts. – There’s really not much to say about this track……Its Thandiswa at her best

I think this is enough for now….she also features her sister Ntsiki Mazwai (a fellow tvsa blogger) on one track.
Tha6

One of her musical icons is Busi Mhlongo……and if you’ve seen Thandiswa perform live, I swear you would think she was Busi Mhlongo. I‘ve seen Thandiswa perform alone and with Bongo Maffin a number of times…..but my memorable performance has to be when she recorded her DVD at MetroFM studios hosted by T-boz (former MetroFM DJ who now works for KayaFM). Mama Winnie Mandela was in the crowd……That evening Thandiswa gave one of the best live acts I’ve seen in my life (it comes second to Michael Jackson’s last performance in South Africa).

Tha1

Thandiswa is also featured as a cover girl on the March edition of True Love….and she’s looking HOT…..I didn’t buy a copy of the Magazine but I did manage to take a few pics from the magazine (I’m sorry….there’s no way I will pay R20 for a magazine edited by a Chef/cooking lady)….Thank God the Security at Clicks didn’t see me while paging through the Mag.

The Mazwai family is not short of talent…some of Thandiswa’s siblings are in the arts and entertainment industry……..Her Mother (may her soul rest in Peace) and her Father must be one of the proudest parents…..

Thank you Thandiswa for taking me back to EC with this Album……Thanks for reminding me where I come from, and thanks for teaching these young kids HOW TO SING….

Without mentioning names…..all these “female musicians” that think can sing just because they can say Do re mi fa so la ti do……..take a chapter from Thandiswa’s book PLEASE……

I encourage you to go get the album and True Love….If you buy True Love, please let us know what she says on the article….

Now can someone at Gallo give me 10 copies of Thandiswa’s Album to give away to TVSA readers?????

My tvsa friend once wrote (on fbk) that she was rockin' Thandiswa’s iBhokwe- me loving the meat, so much, I was salivating, I thot they had served goat meat to the ‘guests’ in Mazwai’s gig that she went 2….
I have not listened 2 the CD yet but will talk anyway….Perhaps let me start on the re-cap b4 I also find myself “excited” -the Mjay way..…
After calling almost 10 Musica stores around Pretoria…
Why just Musica ndoda...- u have shares? – On a serious note to Mrs Distributor of the CD- pliz take note of this "shelf emptiness"-  there is nothing as frustrating as not finding a CD on shelves…& end-up surfing radio stations hoping that a crazzy DJ will play the song  ….
I found 1 store that had…..This is my proof that i bought the album-
Kwa kwa kwa- the name of the “store” was Look & Listen EMJay…pliz mention it… em trying 2 get BEE shares..there, pliz go buy people.!…Receipt checked & verified, its definitely not a six pack of red square/ Smirnoff …. .
probably thought I was drunk……I couldn’t drive straight as a result of my excitement……..
I suppose there is a chance that u were both excited & also drunk….? Lol
There’s no way you can listen to the album while sitting down……
Ohhhhooo- that explains the drunk driving behaviour…. Sorry Boeti I now believe that ubugida/ ungqunga/ utyityimba while in-between the traffic- definately not neccessarily drunk
person with a calling to be a traditional healer sometimes suffers from a kind of madness as a sign of her/his calling
Eish, my confused ex-Sangoma Aunt preferred to call it “sickness” rather than ‘madness’- something about....what kanene..? I do not know it was something about hating ukuba sithi “uligeza”…. [not washing Zulu people…"ihlanya"..]
Thank you Thandiswa for taking me back to EC with this Album……Thanks for reminding me where I come from,
Mhhh, going back to the roots- I think Mazwai is a trend-setter and always push boundaries- does not fear to explore, adventure… & is a role model to all. My memorable Tandiswa’s work was the ‘spirit of u-hadi’ documentary on SABC1 few years back! I am not sure whether I loved it because I was in exile & terribly home-sick at the time [yes, Me & Mr JZ’s accuser went 2 exile post 1994…] - thanx somebody recorded the show & sent it to me… Gosh that was great…, & we enjoyed Zabalaza like nothing after that- me & all nationalities in that ‘exile’…yes, music is a universal lanugage, unyanisile mjj - judging 4rm yo words...everybody is bound 2 love this CD too
Or I loved spirit of uhadi because I am also a fan of Madosini who was featured in the documentary…the woman has something in her….!
Actually I think I loved it because of the way Tandiswa is.. & the way she tells the story.. u really do learn.., get inspired, ….& she has such in-depth understanding & commitment of what she is talking about…& or doing..!
Thanx fo the recap mjj, it really make sense despite the excitement, tl tl tl- now it make me want 2 have both the CD & the goat meat - sorry 4 the length

I got excited reading this review......very infectious. Please explain the sophomore part for me.....my brain's refusing to understand what it means.

I still have not heard Thandiswa's single (clearly an indication of the radio station i listen to) but i dont mind cause i know that stations overplay a song sooo much that it puts one of buying the album come pay day.

True that music is a universal language, otherwise people like Oliver Mtukudzi, Angelique Kidjoe adn Salif Keita wouldn't be so well known. I'll buy anything but i'll definitely not venture into Afrikaans (boere musiek) LOL.

Just the cd cover alone is enough to make one want to buy the cd!
My tvsa friend once wrote (on fbk) that she was rockin' Thandiswa’s iBhokwe- me loving the meat, so much, I was salivating, I thot they had served goat meat to the ‘guests’ in Mazwai’s gig that she went 2….

You dont have to translate MJJ, i lavh them Xhosa, although 70% of the time i dont sing the words correctly or know what am singing about.

That being said…Music is a universal language…I don’t think you have to know Xhosa to appreciate this album…
Definitely, i love Thandiswa's music Xhosa or not.

I have seen this woman perform live, and she puts a lot of work to her perfomance. She has some energy that always makes her perfomance extraordinary.

Thandiswa does look HAAt, nomabakathini, she is HAAT!!!

I just loove Thandiswa's music & voice.I hope lot of artists can learn from her..but NOT imitate her..im just worried about whats normally written about her attitude, as lot of people say she is quite unfriendly, unaproachable etc... so i was thinking how bigger &  more appreciated she cud be if she was a peoples person.
Well done to her on her new album, but why only 9 tracks?? damn!

Thanks MJJ for such a wonderful article. I must say the waiting was worth it.  I've had a pleasure of visiting their studio as they were recording this album and I must say, she is a true african child.  I know this article is about Thandiswa, I thought I should share some information about Thapelo Khomo and then bloggers will understand why she decided to co produce with him.

Courtesy of African Cream Music:
One of the country's most accomplished music producers, Thapelo Khomo has won numerous awards including a Vita Award (1989) for the soundtrack to the film Mapantsula, as well as SAMA awards for Best Song and Best Producer twice (1995 & 1996). He's worked with Norwegian singer Marianne Antonsen, producer Eric Hillestad and he toured Norway in 1996. Khomo also performed with acclaimed music group Stimela in India for the Dalai Lama, with Gospel singer Joan Osborne as well at the reopening of the Alexandria Library Egypt in 2002.
Among many others he has produced albums for Jabu Khanyile, Linda Kekana, Jeff Maluleke and Simphiwe Dana and remixed Wendy Oldfield. Khomo hasalso created themes for the popular soapie "GenRubbish" and Take 5. He continues to play with the world-renowned band Stimela. Khomo produced Drummers from Mother Africa.

I thought I should share this with you.

Tjo Mjj, Thandiswa's CD is HOT. I was expecting more than 9 songs though seeing that it's R100 but ke the CD is quality.

My track at the moment is IZILO, it has that intlombe feel with isgubhu and all, but I was a bit disturbed by the 'Ndiphuph'abantu abazinkawu' line. I also love chom'emdaka.

I bought the CD at Musica, East Rand Mall by the way *Hint BS*. Thandiswa's voice is matured bantu..I love it!

I also heard her sister Nomsa's single. Any idea where I can get it?

as lot of people say she is quite unfriendly, unaproachable etc... so i was thinking how bigger & more appreciated she cud be if she was a peoples person.

i don't buy this nonsense. Not that she isn't rude or unapproachable but that people aren't buying her music because of her attitude. People buy CDs because they are music lovers. If thandiswa doesn't like journos, so what?? Shwashwi wrote a few weeks ago that without the media to promote her album people wouldn't know about her music. If they meant radio and TV then i'd sorta agree but print media? C'mon now!

There are so many underground movements where people promote their music and someone in the league of Thandiswa already has a loyal fan base. If i don't buy her album it would be cause i'm broke or i'm not a music buyer and not because she's considered rude.

How many items has Naomi thrown at her assistants? Who boycotted her?
How much doubt has been shed on Michael Jackson's sexual preferences? R. Kelly ena? Do people not buy their music? People's personalities have zilch to do with the art form they delve in......you either like the product or you don't.

off topic...talk about new releases, I've been listenein to some of Zamajobes latest songs why does Zamajobe NOT put enough effort in her singing..its like she's singing to herslf  ..when her songs actually have a potential if sung right...e.g Lira doenst have the most powerful voice, but she puts much effort and pushes herself....

talk about new releases, I've been listenein to some of Zamajobes latest songs why does Zamajobe NOT put enough effort in her singing..its like she's singing to herslf ..when her songs actually have a potential if sung right...e.g Lira doenst have the most powerful voice, but she puts much effort and pushes herself....

Ndawo Yami just sprang to mind LOL!! I think Zama's voice is better than KB's and Lira's kodwa u'll never see me buying a Zama CD. Eish.

Zamajobe's first album was amazing, all songs were good, i dont know what happened with her second album, im a big fan of her's,have got both of her albums but i am dissapointed in 2nd album, she didnt put much effort in it, in some tracks its like she does not want to sing...her,together with Thandiswa,Zonke & Siphokazi really makes us proud!

uThandiswa is OFF THE HOOK guys. She has grown so much as a musician. Apart from the fact that I would have KILLED someone if I had to just to get a ticket to attend her UpClose and Personal session at Marimba...and to someone who knew someone who knew someone I managed to get in even though the tickets were already sold out  by the Sunday before the show.

Anyways, I got the CD Last week Thursday....it's been in my CD player since. Have been playing it full blast on my way to and from work. LOVE ALL THE TRACKS, except the one she does with Ntsiki...hayi that one does not talk to me at all. I love the fact that she uses different voices, which for me shows growth as a musician as she does it quite well. Also the first thing that came to my mind after listening to the whole CD for the first time was that UYATHWASA uThandiswa (that's how good the singing is on the CD) but is it's either she is in denial or has not realised it....it was quite interesting that she touches on both this issues on the Mag.  Am a bit disappointed though she won't be performing at the CT Jazz Festival.

One other good CD is LIRA's latest one...SOUL IN MIND...prior to this offering I was not a fan....however...after giving it a listen...AM SOLD....the entire CD is good.

It's just so cool to see the standard and quality of our music improving to this extent.

@60PLUS MADALA....Or I loved spirit of uhadi because I am also a fan of Madosini who was featured in the documentary...hayi ke akasekho uMadosini kule gem...if what the papers reported is true...there was a fall out regarding royalties....ngoku ubetha ngoNtomb'eThongo....yaye uyatsho kakhle.

same as that of Camagwini...i would not accept her CD even if it is a gift....

I agree, Camagwini is scary & she also looks confused! haaibo!

I agree with Ngqesta about Lira's second album..her standard has improved, someone bought me her first album, i was not impressed at all, very boring except Ixesha & Feel Good, those were the only good songs.

@CANDE.....eish, am listening to the album again and i must say am still not convinced that she has grown...don't worry girl....it WILL grow on you...but my sista was saying the same thing...that the first one did not have to grow on her...she liked it immediately.

But she does say on the True Love article that this is a different offering and people expecting a follow on to Zabalaza should just keep listening to Zabalaza bcoz this was is for a 'different' target audience. But hayi I loved Zabalaza and am still loving this one too.

Ngqesta, she put it very well and so did you! If you expect something like Zabalaza, you will be disappointed! The album is great!

Sorry for speaking out of turn:

One person that must have got all the SA songstresses is LULU DIKANA (Zonke's older sister)! All the people who listen to good radio stations like Metrofm, Kayafm, Radio2000 and UWfm will have heard her smash hit single "LIFE AND DEATH"! If you have not heard her song go to you tube and search for it, you will not be disappointed if you are a fan of SOULFUL music! Oh for the lyrics of the song go to: http://museke.com/en/node/2684  She is wonderful! I have her album and its fabulous....I challenge you to go get the album, I will refund you if you don't like it! (i know you will all like it!)

im just worried about whats normally written about her attitude, as lot of people say she is quite unfriendly, unaproachable etc... so i was thinking how bigger & more appreciated she cud be if she was a peoples person.

well mina I have experienced that first hand, I saw her in Rivonia this other time and I tried to speak to her and she was so rude, and I swore that I'll never buy her cds.

well Toxic and MJJ - if you go to a restuarant and the owner or the waitress are rude to you, would you still go that restaurant and spend ur hard earned money even though you love their food?

I think Thandiswa needs to work on her attitude period if she wants to score more fans, we are her bread and butter and the sooner she realise that the better.

I love her music, I'm still thinking if I should buy the cd.

O! gqitha Mjay...ungandincama ngezisulu! Nasemsebenzini ndinegotiator amaxabiso ngathi lishishini lam eli.

The show, was off the hook, wabona the venue was small, so it lived up to the "up close & personal" what what theme.

A portion of the show was  live on Metro (Eddie's show- did he have to wear a suit ? buttoned up nogal?)....
Thandiswa did a new CD songs, the ones without Ntombethongo, he was apparently in some Amsterdam gig or something. She also rocked coupla songs from Zabalaza too...and my all time favorite the qhawe lamaqhawe song... just  love that Madikizela  line coz Mam Winnie i s a skhokho saka.

And then her base guitar guy went to the loo,  heyy wahlala laa mfo endlini yangasese maan.... Phofu it was obvious she had to explain uba she was waiting on umfana osaye ngasese. Hayke in the interim wasibetha nge IMPRO yomhlaba. She n the Xhosa audience rocked some traditional Xhosa songz (jislik, amaXhosa ayazithanda izinto).

Anyway back to Mathandi, laa sisi can sing, even little Malaika perfomed her "people shall govern/freedom charter piece" Hhe ufana nabani kakade lamntana?

I wud so teh show again, but next time i will take an AFRO comb ....* intombi eyayihleli phambi kwam  yandisokolisa gqitha ngala untamed mane yayo", andisathethi ngeyedreadlocks...am sure uba lowa ngusister ka Zuluboy...andifuqa loo mantombazana. Otherwise yho yho it was awesome!
