The fruit of the spirit is Love

Last week I wrote about the Fruits of the Spirit as in found in Galatians 5:22, 23. And as promised, I will be taking each fruit a week and elaborate on it. So today we will be talking about LOVE.

What is LOVE?

Wikipedia definition: Love is any of a number of emotions related to a sense of strong affection and attachment. The word love can refer to a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes, ranging from generic pleasure ("I loved that meal") to intense interpersonal attraction ("I love my wife"). This diversity of uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, makes love unusually difficult to consistently define, even compared to other emotional states.

My Bible defines Love in 1 Corinthians 13:1 - 8

1If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

From the two definitions we can see that the world uses the word love very loosely. We often say that we love the weather, we love our favourite food, and we love our dog. But these kinds of love do not pass the test of true Godlike love as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13. It’s something altogether different, something that impacts our entire existence, our way of life, our way of relating to others. The ingredients of love are a package, not a list from which we select those most appealing to us while we disregard the rest.

Love is the paramount virtue for Christians because it is the trait that most characterizes God. It was love that motivated God to create us, to sustain us, to make Himself known to us, and to give us His Son in order to redeem us.

Love is Multidimensional

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself ’” (Matt. 22:37–39, NKJV

I want to believe that the first part comes easy and natural when you accept Jesus as your personal Saviour. Who is my neighbour? The story of the Good Samaritan describes this perfectly. This was love in action. To love our neighbour as ourselves means to take care of someone else the same way you would take care of yourself.

What Love Does

“Love suffers long and is kind; . . . thinks no evil; . . . rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails” (1 Cor. 13:4–8, NKJV).

What Love Does not DO? The opposite of the above.

The Test of Love

“But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”
Matthew 5:44

Who is your enemy?

If we are to love our enemies, we had better discover who exactly our enemies are. If an enemy is only the one who threatens your life, you may think this text doesn’t apply to you, inasmuch as you prob¬ably have not had your life threatened lately. But by definition, an enemy is an opponent, a rival, a competitor, a challenger, a contender. An enemy is one who hates you or who mis¬treats you. It might even be a spouse or another member of the family. There may be times when a family member isn’t very loving. He or she may even look for ways to irritate you—or worse. When that hap¬pens, it is easy to get caught in the trap of retaliation and pettiness.
Sometimes you may experience conflict on the job, and those you have worked with side by side over the years may begin to think of you as an opponent. An enemy could be someone you have cared a great deal for or even may be someone in your church. We need to realize that the enemy Jesus referred to is not limited to someone who would threaten our lives but is anyone who causes us enough consternation to tempt us to retaliate.

Consider these words: “I was hungry, and you formed a humanities club to discuss it. I was imprisoned, but you complained about the crime rate. I was naked, and you debated the morality of my appear¬ance. I was sick, and you thanked God for your health. I was homeless, and you preached to me about the shelter of God’s love. You seem so holy and so close to God; but I’m still hungry, lonely, cold, and in pain. Does it matter?”

Be honest. What kind of lifestyle changes should you make so that you can become a good Samaritan to others? Who do you know right now who is at this moment on the other side of the road in the world of hurt? How much death to self will it require for you to treat this person as a “neighbour”?

“And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the
                                      greatest of these is love”
                               (1 Corinthians 13:13, NKJV
).

Matthew 7:20 "Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions"

Question?  when people look at you, what do they see?  Do they see LOVE or the opposite of LOVE?

The story of the Good Samaritan who had was travelling and came across a man who had been robbed and badly wounded.
The Samaritan took the man to the nearest Inn where he looked after the man for a couple of days. He then asked the "owner" of the Inn to carry on looking after the man until he returns. He paid him money and promised him more money upon his return.

This story teaches us of love so pure that the Samaritan loved/ took care of a man he doesnt know. What greater love s there? Love thy neighbour as you love yourself.

Thank you FK.

OH God Help me ... this is my prayer these days ... OMG because there is this one creature i dont seem to forgive(i know Phikza you have been telling me a lot about this my friend). You know i thought i have forgave this person but lately, i count nje all the wrongs (hehehehe), anything nje that this person does angers me, i feel like nje the person is being pretentious, i cant get past what the person did to me let alone to trust shim words or motives ... all in all nje kubi and now that im thinking about it, i have such a hard heart bathong ...lol

Thanks GML and Vesa

We must also remember that during that time, people were xenophobic.  The good Samaritan's life was also in danger as they did not have a good relationship with the Jews.  Here, were are taught that the Samaritan risked his life to save a Jew.  Would you do that?  Risk your life to save your enemies?

How many times do we pass people on the road needing help and we are just tooo scared to help because of crime?

This parable looks beyond race, age, sex, race, religion, etc.  It is showing love IRRESPECTIVE.  Showing love to an atheist.

@BA - it helps praying about it.

i count nje all the wrongs (hehehehe) - are the wrongs more than 70 X 7?  If the answer is NO, then you know what to do.  Think about this BA - how many times to we wrong God and He still forgives us?  Tell God and He will help you.

Oh FK dear, i know and that's on ething that pains my heart that im not forgiving but God always forgives me, I am praying about it a lot, a lot dear it is my everyday prayer, i just dont want to pretend like everything is 'cool' when it is not ... that will be pretending and i dont do pretending .......... the problem is im toooooooooo analytic neh and i focus my analysis on the negative stuff(as far as what happened is concerned) which creates whole lot of negative emotions, hence hardening my heart ... it is wrong yes i know and i am praying about it dear, a lot.

One of my favourate songs: Cece Winans- A heart like yours...is my desire comes to mind,...a Heart like Christ,a heart epitomised by His love for us. A heart like His is my desire and it is my daily prayer. When i say this prayer i always remember that To love God is to love His people.
Those "words to concider" I will ponder on and im making my FB update right now...thank you FK

@ GA - when I studied this Fruit - I also realised that I am not doing enough re Loving.  It reminded me of certain people who are not my friends but I come into contact on a daily basis.  Some of them bantena.  I need to work on that.  Jesus was never tena'd by anyone.  He did not discriminate.  Oh Lord, have mercy on us.  I sometimes just ignore them and it is so wrong.

@SavD - I am not doing this to gain anything but asking for athank you is it too much ???
God is watching and guess what?  He is thanking you on her behalf. Just carry on doing your part.  One day, your actions will change you and she will see the goodness in you.  BTW - goodness is another Fruit of the Spirit.

As i ponder on those "words to concider"...this quote about love came to mind:

Love, like truth and beauty, is concrete. Love is not fundamentally a sweet feeling; not, at heart, a matter of sentiment, attachment, or being "drawn toward." Love is active, effective, a matter of making reciprocal and mutually beneficial relation with one's friends and enemies

I never knew what love was until i had my baby boy.  I tell you when you have kids that's when you truely know the meaning of love.  All the time when i look at him with all this unconditional love, i see what God sees in me and why he loves me so much.  God is love and he loves us dearly but the evil one wants us to question God's love for us.  He wants us to doubt if we truely deserve his love, but you know what God loves us so much that he gave his only son, he sacrificed his son for us.  How many of us can let go of the one thing that means so much to us for others?  I can't even describe the love that God has for us just as Joseph Prince says..."good things happen to those who know God loves them".

GML

@SavD:

God say we must love each other and LOVE comes in different forms.
There is a love a parent has for his/her children. A love that means to protect her kids but also teach her kids,no matter how hard, the difference between right and wrong.

Can you imagine SavD, what we would have become, if our parents kept giving and giving us things that we wanted? We would be spoiled rotten.

There is such a thing called tough love. This is the best love that we can ever receive. Because this LOVE is genuine, it's a love that teaches, that cares, a love that truly is the best for us.

GOD practices this LOVE on us when he doesnt answer our prayers sometimes. So you can give your SIL(sister in Law) the same love.
Tough love.

Tell he how you feel, she may be upset adn angry at you but tell her. Tell her how you hate coming home to a dirty house(you may as well be living in the streets)
Tell her that you work hard all day and the last thing you need is to be confronted by a an ungrateful person.
Tell her you want her to show gratitude by her her actions towards you.

She may get upset with you but she will soon realise that you owe her nothing.
tough love only makes us strong. You yourself will come out of this a better erson

@GML - I understand where you are coming from with Tough Love - And I agree with you that there are times when this is required.  Infact, there are scriptures in the bible that shows that Jesus had to resort to tough love.  Remember when he found them selling in the Temple?

Now the difference is that Jesus saw their hearts and motives. Nothing with us it is different.  We see zilch from the inside.  We interprete the reactions at face value.  So we need to be extra careful when we adminiter this kind of love.  At the end, it should not drive people away from us.  Instead, they need to see Jesus buried deep in our hearts.

Thanks FK , for the weekly dose of the cyber cell.
I love this passage at Matthew 22 that says if you only love those who love you and hate your enemies, what is your reward?
I was teaching the teenagers at our church this Sunday, and they asked me about the scripture that says if someone strikes your cheek, give him the other side. I told them that it does not mean let him slap you again. It just means don't react in a way they wouldn’t expect you to, show him a different reaction. Just like with our enemies if they hate you don't hate them back, just show them the other side and do the opposite. i.e. love them.

Shu... Outspoken. So there is a lot more to love than love itself hey. Like for instance, I am so not patient, well I tell myself that and I can see that I am not patient. This gets proved when we drive to work in the morning.

But now just simply because of that, I do not have love beacause Love is paitient. Does not take anybody to be a Christian neh... Thank you for a lovely inspiration.

FK
03 Mar 2010 13:59

@Honeypot - to achieve this, you need to be on some level.  I mean spiritual level.  It is not easy, as we human beings tend to take things into own hands so I can show them gore nna ke mang.  We go as far as saying things like, "I will not take this lying down. Ha ke ntho ya ho bapala"  We are vindictive by nature and the bible telss us that the battle is not ours.  Also it tells us revenge is not ours.

Yes smi3 - there is more love than love itself.  The beauty about this, there is a Holy Spirit to help and guide us all the way.  I can not do this on my own.  Firstly, self must die and let Jesus be in control and these things will come naturally.

Bazalwane - we have a mammoth task in our hands to love one another as God loves us.  Can we do it? Is this possible?

This weekend, a friend of mine enlightened me about love as i was agonisng over these people that i love very much and because of that i was struggling to be harsh with them because i did not want them to think i dont have their back or i dont care. He basically made me realise that i do them no favour by not being frank with them when they do me wrong or when they do wrong in general.
This is what he said ...."That love without justice is merely weak sentimentalism"....
Encompassed in the following quotes amongst many that i went on to google:

"Just as justice is not just without love, so love is not love without justice, its reduced to mere emotion and sentimentality"
"Love without justice is sentimentality, Justice without love is legalism, Justice without love is naked brutality.”
"Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic.
"Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice "...

Justice definition: is the concept of moral rightness based on ethics, rationality, law, natural law, religion, fairness, or equity.

This has been the center of my thoughts and actions this week continuing. I am still trying to put into proper perspective?, but i certainly needed to hear this in addition this articles....
