You’ve got to have Faith

Heb 11:1-7

To have faith is to be sure of the things we hope for, to be certain of the things we cannot see. It was by their faith that people of ancient times won God's approval. It is by faith that we understand that the universe was created by God's word, so that what can be seen was made out of what cannot be seen.

It was faith that made Abel offer to God a better sacrifice than Cain's. Through his faith he won God's approval as a righteous man, because God himself approved of his gifts. By means of his faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead. It was faith that kept Enoch from dying. Instead, he was taken up to God, and nobody could find him, because God had taken him up. The scripture says that before Enoch was taken up, he had pleased God. No one can please God without faith, for whoever comes to God must have faith that God exists and rewards those who seek him. It was faith that made Noah hear God's warnings about things in the future that he could not see. He obeyed God and built a boat in which he and his family were saved. As a result, the world was condemned, and Noah received from God the righteousness that comes by faith.

What is Faith ?

Faith is often a difficult concept to understand, as it refers to as a firm belief and trust in something we might not have yet seen or experienced. It is placing your trust in something that is maybe not tangible, or explainable. Yet, it is a need that most people have. We all need to believe in something more than ourselves, a "supernatural". In the search for this, many get lost, and despondent. We are all created by God, and our souls yearn for His presence, and guidance. We can only truly be at peace if we have found Him. But does our faith actually bring a change about in our lives?

We read about Enoch in these verses, and we read that his faith was something that brought him so close to God, that his life pleased God, and God took him away in life, and he did not have to die. It was his faith that transformed him, and resulted in him not having to die. How wonderful this must have been. But, we also see that faith without actions is meaningless. Take Noah as an example. God told to him to build a massive ship, and this in a place where there was no water, nor even a sign of rain. He was the joke of the neighbourhood, everybody teased him and said he was mad. Could you imagine when he started gathering animals, and putting them in the ark. Even then there was no sign of rain. How much faith did this ask? But, his faith in God was also well rewarded, for God kept His word, and the rain did eventually come. Even when everybody was laughing at Noah, he kept to the word of God, and for that Noah and his family were saved.

But what is the difference between faith and trust? For faith without trust is meaningless. We read that even the devils believe in God, but that changed nothing for them. It did not transform them in any way. Let's look at an example. There is the story of an acrobat that walked the tightrope. He claimed to be the best in tightrope-walking ever, and wanted to prove it. So, he found the highest two buildings, crossing a road, and he placed a tightrope between the two buildings. Then, without a safety-net, he crossed it. Wanting to prove he was the best, he took a wheelbarrow and pushed it across. Wanting to prove he was even better, he took a pig, and placed it in the wheelbarrow, and while the pig was squealing and kicking, he pushed the pig across. When he came to the other side he asked the people if they now truly believe that he was the best. The all said yes. They truly believed he was the best, ever. He then said; "If you truly believe this, then you get in the wheelbarrow, and let me push you across. They believed, but did they trust him?

God has given us promises. He will always be there for us, and he will take care of all our needs, if we have faith in Him, and if we should trust Him, but do we trust Him with everything? Is our faith a faith that transformed us, and made us walk so close to God that we are like Enoch, or is it just a knowledge that God exists, but without it having any substance when it comes to our day to day lives?

I find that most people confuse faith with hope.  You know the Bible says faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God so if we do not study God's word then our faith is dead.  The more you meditate on the word, the better understanding of things around you and who God really is and we cannot please God without faith.

Cody

faith & hope is confusing indeed Mathaz. Kodwa how do you keep on having faith when you have been praying instead things go wrong even more.

FK
15 Jul 2009 11:40

This is so true Mathaz.  Abraham listened to God, he heard God's voice.  He took Isaac with him to go make a sacrifice because God said so.

In our times, God is talking to us in His word which is the Bible.  The Bible itself declares, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God"

He also speaks to us through our thoughts, conversations with others and through circumstances.

Nice one Mamfundisi FK! Thanks Cody again for the wonderful work you continue to do week in and out, it cant be easy

Its a great article and I personally think we should dwell more on and faith as a foundation of the blog then move to other topics coz the very walk and actions of a believer rest on Faith, tithing, stewardship, trust, hope and positioning all start with FAITH,

let me come back - I have to finish something for my boss.....let me not loose my thought line......

@Cody...That is a sure sign that something is happening in the spiritual realm.  The devil wants to distract us with all these negative circumstances so we can say that God is not listening to our prayers.  We must keep on praying as much as you think that you are hitting a wall remeber we are in a spiritual warfare no matter what you are going through.

@ Cody - Ho thata ka nnete 'me.  You know, this reminds me of our last article "Fearless living in dangerous times" and I made a comment that whatever you need, you will find it in the bible.

When all these things are happening Cody, when you feel like your prayers are not being answered, when you feel down, know that God is up to something.  Remember the story of Job?  His wealth and children were taken away from him.  It did not end there, his health was also deteriorating. And he still kept the faith.  Job accepted the bad with the good and always trusting in God.

No matter what happens, let us remember that God is our creator and He knows what's best for us.

I find that most people confuse faith with hope.

Faith and hope are so closely linked that they cannot be separated. Still there is a difference between them.

Faith believes that God can do…
Hope believes that God will do…

Nicely put FK, Cody remember that God always works accordin to His principles and decrees, He will never go against them for the word says that He is not man to lie nor son of man to change His ways.

His promises to us are always YES and AMEN....so when you pray out the desires of your heart (which He put in there) remember that they are already answered, the devil may attempt to derail you but stand firm and KNOW that He has already answered, the physical manifestation may seem to take awhile but the provision has already been given! This is where we test the fraility of our faith and trust in Him to come through as His word says,

Also when we pray we must watch that we are praying in line with His word/will/principles, you cant pray for something outside HIS word - it will only get answered by the devil and his granny

thats why we are exhorted to read the word, for thats how faith is developed, we all have a measure of it but it must be developed.....

FK i always look forward to reading your articles, they are always so refreshing

God has given us promises. He will always be there for us, and he will take care of all our needs, if we have faith in Him, and if we should trust Him, but do we trust Him with everything?

You know it is always so easy to say we have faith but when the times comes for us to put that faith in action we fail to do so, that shows a lack of trust on our part.

I defied my family the past weekend for God. U see my father passed away and they wanted me to perform the cleansing ceremony  but i could do that as i believe that the blood of Jesus has already washed me clean. They said ke tlo ba le senyama and all that but i truly believe that i dont need a sheep to be purified as the son of God has already died for ME

There is no senyama or sefifi ko "Jesung".  Yes, there will be trials and tribulations but I know that our God loves us and He will never leave us nor forsake us.

When we are tempted, God will help. He will provide a way out, not to avoid temptation, but to meet it successfully and to stand firm under it. This is testing as permitted and controlled by God to produce sterling character that is a reflection of His own.

God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear and successfully conquer. He challenges us to meet the temptations that spring up before us on the road of life, beat them down, learn the lessons, and move on to receive the crown of life. He promises to be with us every step of the way. We can be confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ when He will give us our reward.

This is TRUE - he bazalwane, the devil can answer prayers and given the opportunity, he will answer them.  Now we need to hear God's voice so that we are aware when Satane answers.  We need to read the bible, search the scriptures and ye shall know.  There is no excuse for ignorance.

i think we sud just read Hebrews11 it has all the kinds of faith

ok i also gat confused between FAITH & TRUST  but since you explained FK it makes it much better

i always thought we all have faith reason being we all sit over the chairs without any doubts they may break or make us fall or ok somebody said we must have faith like small babies coz even if you can put them over the bed and ask them to come to you(lets say you are down on floor) they will just come not even thinking what if mom let me fall or wont grab me

ok some of the examples that makes faith more clearer is When Peter walked on water, and immediately he started to doubt he drowned and Jesus said you of little faith..........

Bazalwane can u pliz pray with me coz i ve been struggling to get ma drivers licence booking dates i wake up everyday at three oclock yet i dont get a date i really need your prayers( i guess now i have to apply the faith we talking about neh)

the bible says faith comes from hearing and hearing God's word only

@ Mathaz - It is true.  When we go through temptations, it is not from God.  His plans are for us to prosper and not to harm us (Jeremiha 29:11)

There is a scripture in the Bible that says God does not tempt.

James 1:13
"When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;"

15 Jul 2009 14:35

Mathaz, here is another thing

even if we are tempted by the devil himsaluf, God will not allow us to be tempted more than we are able to bear. He will make a way of escape. We are then told to flee from the worship and participation in worship of idols. Get away from that. Separate ourselves from. But do we? In fact, we succumb to temptation and don’t even bother trying to remove ourselves from it.

God will not let you down because he vowed and promised he wouldnt in his name. Now if he lets you down it means he lets himself down because he vowed using his name.
I find comfort in knowing that no matter what, God will not let me down because he promised me so......

Thanks FK.

God will put everything in it's place for anyone once they have positioned or aligned yourself with him. And once you are in a place of peace and your heart is ready to receive. He will put all things in it's place.

Example.

If a woman is really desperate to get married and start a family. Once God knows that the person in at peace and is ready to accept and love the way she should God will grant her a loving man who will give her kids.

You yourself have to be right before God makes things right for you. You should be at peace with yourself 1st buy believing and trusting him completely.

Amen

Okay guys, thanks a lot, i think sometimes i try too hard not to have emotions, or to become hurt, because i feel guilty as a christian, hore how on earth can I allow myself to be sad when i have God. i know i should cast my burdens unto him but it is easier said than done. the emotions dont just vanish just like that! ya one needs serious spiritual growth.

I think i was confusing giving your burdens unto God with being totally emotionless. I am forgeting that as much as we live in the spirit we also live in the flesh and we should not let our flesh over power us.

hape i dont know why I should worry if i feel weak, 1corinthians 9:12 his power is made perfect in weakness. When i am weak he says i am strong. so this statement below makes it all better! i just love the homecell hleng, it calls you to order akere FK?

That is a sure sign that something is happening in the spiritual realm. The devil wants to distract us with all these negative circumstances so we can say that God is not listening to our prayers.

Why was I not called, LOL

Thank you for the word, I am still alive just work is taking up my TVSA time, but I will not miss my fauvorite blog of the week.

Faith my fauvorite subject, and whenever I think of the faithful of God Abraham and Sarah are always first in my mind. Let me tell you why!!

Romans 4: 18-24
Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of
many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”a
Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good
as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb
was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise
of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being
fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is
why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” The words “it was credited
to him” were written not for him alone, but also for us, to whom God will
credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord
from the dead.

Sarah was old, and she never had children but when God told them that they will have a child, they laughed (yes they did) but they had faith in the Lord that he had the power to do what he promised, and they hung on to that faith and they had that child in the end.

It can get difficult in life and things can all seem to be going wrong, but God will never give you what you cant handle. Hardships are part of life, and even Job went through a whole lot and he learnt that he has to accept the good and bad that comes with life, but never cursed the Lord or lose faith in him. It is okay to cry when thigs are going wrong, it does not mean that you have lost faith......to me it simply is acknowledging that things aren't what they should be but through prayer + hope, you have faith that it will be okay, you will get through or around the situation and you will be on the other side no matter what.

When all human reasoning and knowledge comes to an end that is when you realise the importance of faith, because without any justification or proof you just know that things will be allright! Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and when you have no hope in life faith has nothing to help you with.

Hi guys. This here is a virgin blogger so go easy on your responses should you have any. The gloves can come off after my second post.

My take on faith in the contemporary world that we live in is that it is our crutch. Seeing as that we cannot point to say Modimo ke o, we need to have something to rely on, to believe in that we know is set in stone and will NEVER let us down. This simply put is faith. It is the essence of things unseen and the substance of things hoped for. Essence and substance. The definitions of these words is not far apart but the resonace is far reaching. The common denominator is that they are the foundation of belief in GOD.

There is a comment at the top that asked how we keep on having faith when things continue to go south. This is the time to hold fast. Think back on the disciples when they were in the boat with Jesus and the storm came and tossed the boat about. The disciples who knew Jesus personally, saw his works, still had fear that they were going to perish. This was a clear example of people letting go of their faith even in the presence of the Lord. Jesus is woken and he calms the storm. HE then turns to the disciples and questions them as to why they are so fearful. HIS next question is: "how is it that ye have no faith?" The long and short is that with Jesus in our lives we have no reason to lose faith and to fear. This even when all else around appears to be rousing up a storm. Allow me to finish off by saying that GOD's delay is not GOD's denial. HID timing is always perfect to an extent that when you look back you appreciate his master stroke.

Stay blessed...and yeah, this is an awesome blog!

Welcome back WSG.

WSG, we need to stay in the WORD for us to keep the faith.  Keep in the Word, by reading, listening to tapes, listening to others teach and preach until the Word is in our hearts and we live, breathe, speak, walk and act on God’s Word at all times.  This will ensure that our faith will stay unshaken.

Well said Nice.  This is what I'm talking about.  FAITH
When all human reasoning and knowledge comes to an end that is when you realise the importance of faith, because without any justification or proof you just know that things will be allright!

We welcome you GB.  In this blog, there are no newbies and oldies.  So be at home and we are looking forward to you sharing with us.
with Jesus in our lives we have no reason to lose faith and to fear. This even when all else around appears to be rousing up a storm. Allow me to finish off by saying that GOD's delay is not GOD's denial.

Reading the two stories (from Nice and GB) I am reminded about the time when the disciples asked Jesus to increase their faith.  We are no different from these disciples.  This is our desire this day - to have our faith increased.  We think that if we have more faith, we can do what Jesus did.  Jesus answer to them was that they do not need a large amount of faith.

They only need a mustard seed size faith. Have you seen how small is the mustard seed?  It is so tiny.  Yes, thats what they needed and this is what we also need today.  A MUSTARD SEED SIZE FAITH.  How do we get that?  By getting HIS word into our hearts.  And His word is the truth.

it is a need that most people have. We all need to believe in something more than ourselves, a "supernatural". In the search for this, many get lost, and despondent
.>>>>>>>>this is so true is whether (this is how my nanny says when she wants to say that is why) the bible says my my people perish be cause of lack of knowledge (hosea 4:6)

God has given us promises
>>>For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God.2 Corinthians 1:20

faith is a substance of things hoped for and an evidence of things not seen
now if it is easy for you to believe that God is there; can heal you; provide; protect and all this good things we love him for, what is it that make one not have faith?

excersice faith and see if God wont come through for you

remeber what happened at the Red sea? Pharaoh's people were coming after God's chosen nation in chariots and horses but because of the faith in God's nation; a stick was pointed to the sea and a dry road came up for them to cross. but those who were trusting in their strength and chariots were swallowed by the sea.(Ps20:7)
this teaches us that we must faith for God to work His wonders in our lifes.

we are living by grace with the hope of one day uniting with the king when He comes to fetch the bride.
let us not be distucted by the noise of satan's cheerleaders.lets keep our eyes fixed to the cross.

He is coming and soon!!

GOD's delay is not GOD's denial....................YES, YES, YES!!!!!! welcome GB. i love this cell group bathong!

** God uses dreams to build our faith…When God wants to work in our lives, He gives us a dream about what He wants us to do and about how He's going to use our lives to impact the world.

** After God has given you a dream, the next step is decision making; God challenges you to do something about your dream. Nothing is going to happen to that dream until you wake up and put it into action. A lot more times we have dreams but we never get to step two: making the decision to trust God and follow that dream.

** Even as you make a decision to follow the dream God places in your heart, you can expect a delay. God will not fulfill your dream immediately because this is another step toward building your faith.

In Habakkuk 2, God says, "But these things I plan won't happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!" <<<piece taken from Rick Warren>>>

You know our faith must work its our duty for it to work, afterall its the only way we please God (Heb 11:6) To me,

FAITH = KNOWING YOUR SOURCE + KNOWING THAT HE HAS ALREADY DONE IT!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

We are in a season where our faith must not fail but it does; as strong as we may like to believe it is or as powerful as the ministry we sit under OUR faith FAILS without us even realising it,

am reminded of this story of a woman who had a back disability for 18 years (Luke 13:10 - 16)

She was a daughter of Abraham - the very father of Faith and yet she was infirmed for 18 years much like us
* we are children of the promise yet we remain infirmed
(I dont know yours but I sure do know my infirmity),
* for 18 years she walked hunched unable to see around her clearly,
* for 18 years things went above her head unnoticed to her, if she wanted to see what was behind her she had to turn and even then still not see
* She came from a line of FAITH yet didn have the faith to believe for her own healing, we too are like her, OK at least I know I am (will speak for myself), its evdient coz I am not enjoying my salvation , my sozo'd life to its fullest!!!!

When saved or sozo'd -  I am promised all round prosperity, good health, guilt free, deliverance etc....life, I am a child of the Abrahamic lineage and should be enjoying Gods promises....ALL Of them!

There are certain things I must do in order to activate those blessings and stop walking around with infirmity,

(I will also make reference to Gen 22), these are some of the things I discovered that I needed to do in order to activate the blessings of being sozo'd:

1. Stay in Him, love Him and be of service to Him in His house
, Abraham loved God and worshiped HIM, God made a promise to Him, and us

2. Obedience to instruction = faith works when you follow instructions, stop just intending to obey but obey - a tough one!! When God tells you to do something, DO IT, Sarah may have had good intentions when she instructed the maid to lay with Abraham but her intentions didnt = obedience and certainly showed that her faith failed! God called them to wait on Him patiently trusting that He will come thru for them and she didnt OBEY (see three below)

3. Sacrifice = giving = faith: Gen 22:9, when Abraham finally got Isaac, God told him to give him as a sacrifice, Abraham didn intend to give him, he did, he walked all those days and up that mountain, prepared the alter, lay the wood, bound his only promised son, was ready to take his life...he didn intend to sacrifice he did it, he gave his Isaac to the Lord!!!!! our faith fails coz we intend to do things - God is pleased when we stop intending and do something about His instructions coz it shows we believing Him - God responded to Abrahams sacrifice coz it showed Him that Abraham had faith in Him to fulfill His promise to give Him more Isaacs,
When we withhold our Isaacs we are not showing faith but selfishness, God has given us each an Isaac the KEY to unlocking our sozo blessings....I dont wat yours is but mine is TIME, my Isaac key is my TIME, when we release the thing our very life depends on God responds - as I am showing HIM I BELIEVE IN HIM! I have FAITH that He has already given me the blessings!

sorry to break off i will be back just now - I have a music lesson

There is a lesson i leant from the movie Bruce Almighty..
That God has control over everything about us EXCEPT for our free will. And so when ever we are faced with a situation, we have the choice to trust Him or not to, to choose faith or fear. And what I find amazing about God is that when we choose Him/faith its in our best interest all the way, yet still when we choose the opposite He does not forsake us.

Ofcourse the implications of not choosing faith is that we opt for the harder way or the longer way (sometimes the implications are tragic), but when we decide to call on Him, He is there to bring us back on the right course (restoring us etc).......thats how Faithfull He is.

I have a very funny relationship with God, where when i am facing a trial, i know I am God away from a solution. I can almost see Him going come on, you can do this...just read the Bible, listen to a sermon, go to fellowship...just get up....but at the time i choose to remain in my missery.....And when i do decide to deal with the situation His way, i am amazed at how much time i wasted in fear and missery when i could have gotten on His waggon immedietly.....
(.....aaand im just coming out of sometyhing like this.....kinda ashamed of myself 2...)

When it comes to faith, the ball is in our courts...When we dont take God's word about our situations and run/mobilise/act according to it WE sell OURSELVES short....

FK and Cody...thanx again...

Lemme read the replies/comments......

...i do....and i agree with the heart of what you are saying......which is that FAITH without ACTIONS means NOTHING....

And i think i can also understand the frastration ye o naleng yona ka bazalwane who sit and expect things to just drop from heaven (its not the fisrt time u expressed this sentiment) just because they believe in them without working for them.....
I have seen it...and i think its sad on their part....BUT most importantly, it is unbiblical as most of the guys mentioned in the blog.....Faith without actions is meaningless...

Guys guys guys... What a conversation...
As I was reading the comments I couldn't help but remember one quotation I came across.  It goes something like - "Don't tell God how big your problems are, instead tell your problems how big God is"  - and that in itself should be evidence enough that you are being refined.  God says, "If you have faith as big as a mustered seed, you will tell the mountains to move and they will move."  And what are those mountains?  For me, they are my problems.  God has made it possible for me to tell my problems to make way and if I take that and apply it - that is faith made visible for I can immediately see the evidence.  And if I can see the that - that is substance enough for me.

Powerful article I must admit.

Yeah it's eaisy  to say you have faith but when you have to exercise it it's not as easy. Like some have already quoted, faith comes from hearing and hearing God's word.  We need to surrender our lives whooly to God and trust in Him and Him ONLY. How does one have faith whereas they don't read the Word of God? What or who are you having faith in?

Unless we give our lives to God and walk with Him, the faith we have is just useless.

Those are my thoughts.

The exercising thereof is the whole point of having faith in Him who promised to sustain you in times of need.  It is not easy if we were to use our canal minds to make sense of it but if we have the surety that He will sustain us then we have no need to fret.  And in exercising such faith we come to the realisation that we can be patient which is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
and the more you realise that God does deliver and that you have developed the art of WAITING upon Him you then realise that you have been on the fast lane all along and you start appreciating the little things you have instead of chasing things that will nor add any value in your SPIRITUAL life.  The sooner you realize that the better.  There is a spng I love so much by The Heralds which says - "Have you given Him a try?"
And I can assure you, once you do you will not go back.

Unlike our black sisters would say - "once you go black you can't go back."

Most of us are just sitting around waiting for some kind of special call or revelation from God before we get involved in His work. It's not likely to happen because God has already given us lots of instructions in his Word regarding what to do. He is  the way, the truth and life.  All we need to do is read the WORD … and start moving.

Also once we have read the word, let us pray to be the doers of the word as well as the hearers.

Haai no. SuperTwinkle and Sammis - I hear your guys.  talking about exercising that faith.  Put that faith into actions.  Faith with no actions is dead.

One thing I wanted to put across is that until you find yourself in a position where you risk your well being vs being faithful to Him - that is when you will see how powerful He is.  And I dare you give Him a try and taste His goodness.
