We have not, because we ask not.

Scripture reading 1 Samuel 1 – 28.

Brief summary

From this scripture we read that Elkanah had two wives: Peninnah who had children and Hannah who had none. I would like to think that Elkanah married Hannah first, but because she had no children he married Peninnah who gave him many children. This was very hard for Hanna because she didn’t choose not to have children and since the other wife made it a point that she reminds Hanna of her barrenness with every chance she got. In case of Hanna, her identity was probably tied up with having no children, like it is even today in most cases. Hanna was not born barren(so to say) but God closed her womb (1 Samuel 1:6) which bring us to the question

Why barrenness?

Like in Hanna’s life, most time we find ourselves in situations and we begin to ask why is this happening to me? Why? Is it my sins, my parent’s, or whatever other things you can think have led you in getting into that situation. But like it is said in 1 Samuel 1: 5 "but the Lord has shut up her womb". So Hannah wasn't barren because of her sins. As a matter of fact, Hannah and her household were dedicated to God because no year passed that they didn’t go to worship and to sacrifice unto the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. 1 Samuel 1:3. Hannah wasn't barren because she had lived recklessly in the past before she got married but the bible says the Lord had shut her womb. Her situation wasn’t to shame but to the glory of God, because it was God who did it and we know that God do things for His glory. So even for the situation we find ourselves in that we begin to have series of questions we need to remember that it is not because of our sins but for the Glory of God, so it is not going to end in shame no matter how bad it seems or looks even if we have made mistakes in the past. God will answer us for He knows why we are in that situation; we just need to trust Him. So to be in that situation doesn’t mean that you did something wrong or something is wrong with you but it is so for God to reveal his glory in you.

What do we need to do then?

In verse 9- 11 it is said that “Hannah stood up and poured her heart to God and made a vow to God”

Hanna realized that sitting there in self pity won’t help, so she stood up and took action for her situation. Often times we delay our answer by sitting in self pity, reminiscing on our problems without taking action, the bible says, “we have not, because we ask not”. The bible says that Hanna’s situation went on year after year, until Hanna stood up! What are you doing with your situation? \\
Verse 10 says in bitterness of soul Hannah wept much and prayed to the LORD. So the answer lies between your knees and the floor! PUSH (Pray Until Something Happens) Hanna did that and she got her answer..

Verse 11 says that Hanna made a vow to God, like most of us, many times when we need something from God we also make certain promises, God if I get this I’ll give you that But how many of us real keep those promises?

Hanna kept her promise and gave back the son (Samuel) to God …This was not a vow taken lightly - it would cost her dearly - let's be serious when we make a vow or promise to the Lord, to see it through

Hannah couldn't take it any more - she made a decision to do something about her situation. She said; enough is enough. This was a breakthrough for Hannah -- she stood up - she rose up above her circumstances - she took a step. Only she could do it. Maybe you've been yearning for the Lord to do something new in you, yearning for something more in your Christian life - maybe you feel stale, stuck in a rut, you want to feel the excitement you once knew. Maybe it's been going on for years - you're fed up going through the motions. Maybe you're longing for him to show you visions, to prophesy, to move in words of knowledge. Maybe you want him to give you a new ministry, to shake you up, to do something dynamic in your life. Maybe you've got such a desire in you to get closer to him, to be more intimate with him, to go deeper in worship. Maybe you don't know what you want - maybe you're simply hungry and thirsty, maybe you need to experience a breakthrough today - only you can do it, stand up and PUSH.

wow BA this is so worth reading

i also want to say that a prayer accompanied by faith yield results
so PUSH must always be accompanied by hopelssly believing inGod to answer your prayers

in all oneface, one must think of gold
it is beautiful to wear all shinny, people love it
but when it is mined, it does not come out all shinny and beautiful.
it goes through a proccess of thorough burning

so even if us, before we can really rejoyce; we expirience hardships that is thorough burning mara once the storm is over we shine, all of this to glory to our Abba Father!

My pastor loves making reference to this scripture. He even said the other day the everyone of us has that Peninnah in our lives

we begin to ask why is this happening to me? Why?<<< I hate it when people ask this question. My theory is: Nothing happens by mistake. You should be grateful it's happening to you ngoba when it's all over, you'll realise that the Lord is ALWAYS there and He was trying to teach you something either about life, you or even Him

I hate it when people ask this question. My theory is: Nothing happens by mistake. Don't judge others from your strength! Just because you get it doesn't they do hence asking! Let's forever exercise grace!

1prayer of praise
2prayer of asking for forgiveness
3prayer of petition( requesting) meaning we cant receive if we didnt ask so from now on i will make my request known to God Coz He says Ask it shall be given and nock the door will be open

Codz...thank dear

Zah000 .... My pastor like this scripture too. and he likes to emphasize that when you are with God other people will never understand and resolute in accusing you, just like what Eli did to Hanna.

i always wonder how many years it took Hanna to stand up.

the other wife made it a point that she reminds Hanna of her barrenness with every chance she got>>>> Its so comforting to know that there were biatches in the bible as well, it shows that the bible is not completely a 0BC book, it was real people. Not sure if i make sense.

God we also make certain promises, God if I get this I’ll give you that But how many of us real keep those promises>>> I refrain from this coz yikulinga uNkulunkulu, i mean i remember there was a time before i started going to church when i promised God that if he did this is will go to church on Sunday, which i never did.

Your last paragraph sounds like my pastor when church is about to finish, only difference yena he calls people to the front to pray for them.

Nice and very blessing piece BA, was also wondering what happened to the cells, i thot bawile abazalwane.

Hannah, was one of two wives married to Elkanah, (1 SAMUEL 1:1,2).....She was provoked by Peninnah, because she was not able to bear children and Peninnah had sons and daughters (1 SAMUEL 1:4,6,7).

***This must have been a bitter life for Hannah to have endured; every year when the family went "up to the house of the LORD" in Shiloh, when she should have been free to worship and rejoice in GOD, she would be baited about her barrenness, loud arguments would ensue, and Hannah would end up in anguish.*** but she never siezed Praying Until Something Happened

Its funny how wrote an article, regarding this chapter that BA is discussing here, it was going to be my first article after my exams. God is good! AMEN although it was a different angle from BA's article, i was going to concerntrate more on bringing Hanna's pain to life, making the article more active, kodwa BA did a marvelous job! Well done BA!!!!!!!!

Thanks to Belz for pointing the biatchiness of Penninah, then it shows that i can also bring in my spice to the article as well so that, it is one article!

When i read this scripture, i was thinking about all the commotion that was happening in Hanna's life. When you dont have children people call you all sorts of things..........i think of conversations like this one:

Hannah: Petros (assuming this is penny's son) can you please go to the shops and buy me milk?
Penninah: heeeee! askies? sorry madam? whose child are you sending to the shops? awuzalengane? my son is going nowhere akere you dont have children go to the shops yourself
(peninnah mumbling: eish nyopa ena ya tshwenya maan!)

huu hai bafethu Penninah was cruel!

aaaah what a lovely article...thank you BA and God bless you lady. This article is a reminder that i should neva stop PUSHing even if things dont happend when i wish for them to, only He knows when it is the right  time for them to happen and to thank and praise Him still even before that time...

lol Cody ... you can still load that article ... Hanna Reloaded, im sure there will be a different revelation from it......

The better thing in Hanna situation is... her husband loved her more than Peninah and that's what fuelled Peninnah.

very true Pooky ... just think about this

God shut Hanna's womb and He definately knew that children were the first thing that every woman and man wants when they got married.... He didnt open the womb not even when He knew that her husband was considering taking another wife since children were a must to him.

You can just imagine the pain that Hanna went through year after  year, Yet God didnt do a thing until she took it upon herself to stand on her two feets, get out of self pity mode and went straight to God. When she wasaccused by the priest that she was drunk she didnt take offence, because her focus was on one thing, that was God.

LOL @ Hanna reloaded

Cody
08 May 2009 15:38

So true BA!! it doesnt help to hold a pity party, as if the pity party will get you what you needed, instead of going straight to God, because all the riches of the world belong to him, it clearly states in Luke 11:9 -10 that, And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Phikza
08 May 2009 15:44

The better thing in Hanna situation is... her husband loved her more than Peninah and that's what fuelled Peninnah.

....thats the best thing bout her perseverance realy, her husband took a second wife only because he wanted his own kids. <<God's ideal marital arrangement was monogamy (GEN 2:24, MAT 19:4-8).>>
<<Polygamy was allowed for a man if his wife was childless (DEU 21:15-17) or in the case of a leviathan marriage (DEU 25:5-19).

She Was Loved By Her Husband.
--He would try to comfort her when she was distressed (1 SAMUEL 1vs.8),
but he either did not understand her grief or was unable to mitigate her suffering.

--She and her husband shared a common faith and worshiped together (1SAMUEL 1:3,7).

--He allowed Hannah to keep her vow to God, which he had the power to cancel (NUM 30:8).
