Fruit of the spirit: Longsuffering - Patience 5 of 10

What is Longsuffering?

         • Forbearance, patience
         • Patient endurance and steadfastness under provocation
         • Forbearance under ill-will, with no thought of retaliation
         • Patience, endurance, steadfastness and forbearance
         • Forbearance under suffering and endurance in the face of adversity
         • Ability to endure persecution and ill-treatment

What is Patience?

Patience is the state of endurance under difficult circumstances, which can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation without acting on annoyance/anger in a negative way; or exhibiting forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties. It is also used to refer to the character trait of being steadfast. Antonyms include hastiness and impetuousness.

And patience is another sorely needed quality in the fast paced world in which we live in today.  Just watch people standing in line at the grocery store or at your local fast food restaurant and watch how short some people's fuses are today. Road rage is still a problem on some of our highways. Look at someone the wrong way and they will want to try and take your head off. Many people have been killed or seriously injured because someone lost his temper over something that was very trivial.

He he he, we don’t want to wait. Look at our lives. Everything is instant: microwave everything. It will only take you 2 minutes. Put it in the microwave. We no longer want to grow anything, see it growing gradually. We just want it ready. We don’t have time to wait. Tjo !!!

A patient person is mild, gentle, and constant in all circumstances. The real test of patience is not in the waiting but in how one behaves while waiting

But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:4, NKJV).

Reaching this point in one’s life takes practice, takes God’s grace, and takes a willingness to put aside self and to surrender to the prompt¬ing of the Holy Spirit. The good news is that if we learn patience, we are in a position to receive many other blessings from God, as well.

The church is made up of a mixture of people from various back¬grounds and cultures. It also includes people who are on different rungs of the maturity ladder. Patience is necessary to be able to get along where there are so many differences. It is a temptation for those who are mature to be impatient toward those less so. In spite of the fact that it took years for them to arrive at their present level of knowledge, often the mature are unwilling to give the immature the same amount of time and study to reach their level of knowledge and understanding.

Patience in the church is one thing. But what about patience at home? What are some of the things that make us impatient with other members of our family? How long should we pray for family mem¬bers who are out of the faith? Have you ever known anyone who had to pray for a loved one for many years before the person gave his or her heart to the Lord? What are practical ways in which we can learn to cultivate patience with family members? Why is death to self so important here too?

Also, if we can be patient at home, with those who are always “in our face,” then we likely will be patient with others, as well

Think about how patient the Lord has been with you. How does keeping that reality constantly before you help you learn to show patience with others? If the Lord treated you as you treated others, what do you think would be your fate?

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various tri¬als, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:2–4, NKJV).

The devil tries us or tempts us to do evil. The tests and trials that God allows to come into our lives are for the purpose of developing our characters.

“The trials of life are God’s workmen, to remove the impurities and roughness from our character. Their hewing, squaring, and chiseling, their burnishing and polishing, is a painful process; it is hard to be pressed down to the grinding wheel. But the stone is brought forth prepared to fill its place in the heavenly temple. Upon no useless material does the Master bestow such careful, thorough work. Only His precious stones are polished after the similitude of a palace.”—Ellen G. White, Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, p. 10.

This doesn’t mean, however, that every trial is in God’s providence. Often we bring suffering upon ourselves through disobedience; often, too, trials and suffering are just the results of what it means to live in a fallen, sinful world where we have an enemy who hates us (1 Pet. 5:8). What this does mean, however, is that through a complete sur¬render of ourselves to the Lord, to grasping hold of Him in faith and obedience, no matter what we go through, we can come out better or more refined if we allow God to work in us.

No one said it will be fun. Life here often isn’t fun, but we are given this wonderful promise: “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil. 1:6).
One of the ways of our God is that He is a very patient and longsuffering God. His ways are not our ways. And one of the things you will find out very early on about His ways is that He works on a much slower time frame than we do. And unless you learn to adjust to His slower way of working things out - you will find yourself easily losing your patience with Him and how He wants to work things out in your life.

God operates on a much longer and slower time frame than we are used to operating in the fast paced world in which we live in. You will really have to work with the Holy Spirit on this particular quality to get it properly worked up into your soul. The reason for this is that your own impatience will start to act up and try to override the patience and longsuffering that the Holy Spirit will try and transmit to you. At times, it may become of battle of wills - your will against His will.

But once the Holy Spirit starts to try and manifest this quality up into your personality, then you have to try and move with it and allow it to get worked into your mind and emotions. If you do, then His patience will start to override your impatience, and before you know it, your fuses will start to lengthen and you won't lose your patience like you used to do.

The real test of patience is not in the waiting but in how one behaves while waiting.

Please pray for financial brek through to God's people. Saints are giving up on Christianity, people are poor yet they are Christians. I think God is just saying, "Let me see how patient you are my child" Lets hang on God and let's ask God to give us wisdom to use our finances wisely.

It is how we wait that matters, very strong and challenging statement...

@blueroze - tell me about it.  My company is going through restructuring and .......... can't even breath.

@BA - God hears and answers prayers.  Hebrews 4:16 "So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. "

Umatasatasa umthetho wakho lol - I don't want to be near you.  With me it is different.  It is a trust issue.  I like doing things my way and fast fast.  I tend to not trust people to deliver the first time around.  So, if I do them, then I know there wont be any rework required.  So, here @ work, I'm forced to delegate and my patience gets tested all the time.

@smi3 - I hear you when you say Christians are living in porverty out there.  Must we pray for financial break through or Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, then everything else will be added (including financial breakthrough)?

We must also remember that God knows our needs before we even ask.
The tests and trials that God allows to come into our lives are for the purpose of developing our characters.  I want to believe that porverty is one of those trials we need in developing our characters.  To be honest with you, if we were all financially stable, we would never have time for GOD.

"The real test of patience is not in the waiting but in how one behaves while waiting"

Eish!!! This really touched me...All this time I thought I was patient, coz I waited, and still waiting for something I prayed and still praying for. I believe He has heard my prayer, and His answer for now is "Not yet". But honestly my behaviour in this waiting ya swabisha!

"God operates on a much longer and slower time frame than we are used to operating in the fast paced world in which we live in. You will really have to work with the Holy Spirit on this particular quality to get it properly worked up into your soul"

Hi Guys!! I am missing you so much!!

Thank you for the much needed article!!!! i am normally a patient person, our company is undergoing restructuring and boy oh boy, i honestly cant wait for them to finish,  I can SAFELY SAY: I AM FED UP!!! because now every single job in your department gets thrown on your face. more so if your manager resigned, so you being the goodie goodie and always standing in for the manager when he was not around, you seem to be the perfect candidate to wrap up everything until the restructuring is finished.......i dont have patience for this, i really need patience, and this seems to be taking for ever!!

yah, i always wondered why my boss was always edgy and moody, uncooperative, not I know why......im feeling the pinch!! I become so impatient with people when i get home, i cant seem to find balance....

okay was just ventin because this just lifted me up ---------

But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:2–4, NKJV).

when i saw this article, i had to come here because i knew it was talking to me...lemme take a breather, drink coffee...i still have a long waaaaaaay to go!

The real test of patience is not in the waiting but in how one behaves while waiting.

True that FK, I know that  have to be patient as God's timing and pace is not the same as mine................but while waiting I tend to lose my temper a lot and find myself doubting that He will come through for me, and then I begin convincing myself that maybe, just maybe I am asking for what is not mine or maybe God just said no and I refuse to listen, only to feel shame when He answers.

of all the fruits that we have spoken about so far, this is the one that I find most challenging as it does not just come easily but have to be learnt and practiced over, and over, and over again.

If the Lord treated you as you treated others, what do you think would be your fate?

Dont even want to think about that as I give up easily on other people and am too quick to "let it go", it be friendships or supplications, and find it to be the best way than being patient and that is not always true. A little bit more patience may be enough to turn situations around, but will never know if I keep on letting go and wanting things to happen at my pace.

Funny thing I am one of the people that do some things slowly and am the first to shout to people, patience my dear, but struggle to do the same on other situations where I know I am quick. its like I expect God and people to be on my pace :-(

But ke there is hope, I need to let the Holy Spirit to work on my emotions.....as my mind is in the right place and be a great waiter. You know only great waiters get good tips, so I must do the same

Guys please pray for me, cause marriage is really trying my patience. So much demands, its so hard to keep to that perfect picture in our heads or the way things started off due to all of the demands that are inherint in it.
But I'm thankful for marriage cause Its really has made me see God in a different light though. For one,we have a loving Saviour who only wants the best for us but we keep letting Him down or breaking His heart with our thoughts and actions. But inspite of all this He is still willing to knock at our hearts and speak to us in a still small voice. He is still willing to give us good health, safeguard our families, keep a roof over our heads and still invite us to His kingdom.Inspite of what we do or say, what perfect love what patience has the Lord shown to us fallen man.

Unfortuneatly we fall very short of the mark that He has placed, espicially us in marriage.Pray for us please for the bible says ,God hears the prayers of the rightous.

Hey thabang, when I make the call upstairs I will ask him to guide you in the right direction ne.

Cody, I miss you too, hope that one of these days they will get you some help so you dont have to carry all the load alone and then you can have some breathing space. what I like though is that you have realised that you are being impatient and will get some time to work on it and be a better person.

@tha-bang - I will definitely remember you in my prayers. In fact, we need to pray for all the married couples. Marriage is truly a blessing from God. It is one thing that has been around since creation and God blessed it. Now the evil one, is busy trying to destroy the two things that were created and blessed in the beginning.

It is difficult to exercise patience with family members. I have an ADD daughter - now imagine that. It is not easy. The sad thing is, she is not aware and she is not doing these things on purpose. She can't even explain her behaviour. She can't manage it. Me being the mom, who expects to have a perfect girl, having gathered knowledge regarding this disorder, is still very impatient with her. My thinking is, she is now old enough to manage and control herself. I feel that I shouldn’t be still reading about negative commentary on her school reports

It is difficult. The bible say love is patient - does that mean if I'm not patient with my girl I don't love her? mmmhhh,

, sometimes i leave people behind becoz they are late i find it difficult to wait for people who are late. i dont wanna talk about my brothers i just expect them to behave like me and do things the way i do them and its difficult to understand their behavior but this statement  "If the Lord treated you as you treated others, what do you think would be your fate? " really say something to me
