Zahara's millions fiasco and the Ncizas

Zahara is an important newsmaker all over again and this time around it aint about her musical talents or her six SAMA nominations. No, the news is about the controversial handling of her finances. On Sunday 15 April, South Africa woke up to two conflicting articles in the leading Sunday tabloids the Sunday World and the Sunday Sun.

My fellow TVSA bloggers Cheesa and Tazteeq insisted I should write something on this and are of the opinion that I can do it somehow better or something along those lines.

zahara_frankly final

The story
The Sunday World had a leading front page story detailing how Zahara continues to serve as Nhlanhla and TK Nciza’s maid. The paper alleges Zahara has got no copy of the contract she signed with TS Records. The artist who has today sold over 300 000 copies of her 2011 national anthem Loliwe – an SA record last achieved by Malaika almost a decade ago - doesn’t own any property, doesn’t have a car, let alone a driver’s license. Her parents and siblings back in the rural Eastern Cape villages, stay in a dilapidated house that looks like a three roomed house, while next door there is a really “nice” house that can be easily mistaken for a house she built her parents.

zahara

The Sunday World goes further to allege that TK and Nhlanhla, or TS Records for that matter, are ripping Zahara off. When they go to the Eastern Cape to visit Zahara’s parents, Nhlanhla instructs Zahara’s parents who are reportedly illiterate, that she would like to speak to them alone and doesn’t allow the songbird’s siblings to be part of whatever talks.

Zahara’s family spoke exclusively to the leading Sunday tabloid telling them of the Nciza’s promises to their family. The promises include decent house, yard paving, stop nonsense wall to “to protect Zahara from tsotis”, among other things.

In the article, it is stated that TS Records didn’t respond to any sms, email, phone call and voice messages until the paper went to a music ntoni ntoni to talk to TK who denied all the allegations and ended up having the security throw out the tabloid’s journalist.

zahara2

Just so you know, when Zahara became a household name, TVSA bloggers saw this money fiasco coming. Mbulela commented in one of the Cheesa articles on Zahara: “I hope TS Record doesn’t rob this poor girl of her money”. Some of us responded saying: “DJ Sbu is part of the management and he is passionate about young people so we don’t think that can happen under his watch”.

TK doing damage control
In what I as Makisto see as a bid to do damage control, I am arguing that TK called the Sunday Sun to give them a story to “stop rumours about Zahara’s finances”. In the Sunday Sun article, Zahara is trying to “set the record straight” about her “millions” but you need not have studied text analysis modules at varsity to decode that Zahara was in fact defending the Ncizas, sounding very naive, stupid and very gullible. The Sunday Sun reports that Zahara’s royalties for the past six months amount to over a million rand.

zahara again

In the Sunday World, it is reported that Zahara struggles when she goes home to the Eastern Cape as she doesn’t have shuttle money. She allegedly asks her 55-year old mom money to buy airtime. Zahara’s siblings are not happy with the situation and the Ncizas’ empty promises.

TK “fucked up”
Editor of blogging site www.goxtranews.com Buchuke Rabba, yesterday told TK, in an exclusive interview that he “fucked up” with this Zahara thingie like he did with Ntando and Brown Dash. The interview takes turns and twists and TK is asked about his property and why he and Nhlanhla are buying cars while Zahara has no money at all. TK insists Buchule must read the Sunday Sun article, as I said, the article sounds much staged and the answers very rehearsed. The interview also touches on TK’s property who hits back saying he took Zahara in while she was just a “mere a stranger and stayed with her in my family”. The interview is very interesting and Buchule must take over 3rd Degree, period. The whole confrontation takes place on this sound clip: http://soundcloud.com/buchule-raba/tk-b

Makisto defends and lashes at the media
I know TK thinks and possibly made Zahara think she shouldn’t care about what the public say about her social standing not reflecting her fame and millions. A whole lot of people are asking why the media should care so much about this. Here is why: The media is society’s watchdog, cannot keep quiet when certain individuals abuse other individuals. The media’s job is to report about such things without fear and favour.

zahara15

Zahara is a public personality and what she does is of significant interest to the public. It is in the public interest that she be written about. Anyone who uses the media to build their career cannot in turn say I want my privacy and scream “leave me alone”. You lose your privacy the minute you become a public personality.

This whole article in the Sunday Sun being about Zahara setting the record straight is very ridiculous and the article sounds like it was written by my 12-year old niece who aspires to be a journalist. Firstly, the article’s background to the story seems to be about the Sunday World article but the Sunday Sun doesn’t state the origin of such rumours. The origin should have been stated because the two papers ran with the conflicting stories on the same day. Again, the paper doesn’t ask probing questions and seems to have been doing a PR thingie for TK.

zahara11zahara14

Sunday World yesterday proved to be a force to be reckoned with as it was clear in the article and with the pictures that the journalist travelled to the Easter Cape as part of gathering facts for the story. Big ups to Sunday World! Big ups to you guys. That’s good and you proved to be a reliable tabloid. On the other hand, TK used the Sunday Sun to execute his mission and never gave them the background of his promises to Zahara’s parents and that the house they stay in is almost dingy.

What we make of Zahara
In all honesty, Zahara sounds like a girl who you can take out of rural areas and you can never take the rural areas out of her. Yes, she must remain eternally grateful to the Ncizas for believing in her and giving her an opportunity to live her dream. She must equally be grateful that they took her in while she worked on the album. Kaloku she needs to grow up naye and have her own place. What’s with her still leaving with the Ncizas? Is she really saving her money as that’s the impressions she gave Sunday Sun?

Sometimes not going to school is a problem.

Zahara cannot tell the media the truth because she is still staying under the Nciza’s house and if the Sunday World is right when it reports that Nhlanhla treats Zahara like a maid and shouts at her probably for not doing the dishes, she cannot say anything about such big news. I allege that she cannot tell the media the real truth because she may feel she will lose everything she has, i.e, fame, recording contract and other privileges. But in all fairness, Zahara has rights, whether she stays in the Nciza’s house or not. We appreciate that they gave her a break she desperately needed but they should not mistreat her. Akere the Sunday World allege she has no bank account.

zahara12

In the film Avatar, Sam Worthington’s character who transforms into an avatar and goes to Pandora to learn about the avatars, after having been there for quite a while, he is still treated badly and like an outsider despite him having shown his loyalty to the Pandorans. He becomes fed up and utters these words: “I am a part of you and that means I also have rights here”. When you are part of something, despite of the help you got, at some point, you accumulate and or earn rights which I believe should be the case with Zahara.

Guys, do you remember that Zahara charges R75 000.00 per performance? Sesi nyana, build your parents a decent house.

Message to the Ncizas
Yazi nina bantu and your promises, building a decent house in rural areas aint really expensive like here in the city. I am pretty sure a very good construction company can build Zahara’s family a house in less than a month provided you have your house plan and all the works.

zahara15

Not fulfilling your promises is not on and just because you gave someone a break doesn’t mean you should exploit them as per the allegations we are reading. Arg, some niggers need to really be ashamed of themselves! Bloody hell!!!!

Encourage the poor child to learn the art of independence and give her the freedom to control her money. Let her make her own financial mistakes as that’s the only way she will learn. You lot know experience remains the best teacher akere? It isn’t really your place to decide that you wanna pave her parents’ yard, build them a house at whatever time. Hell, when I was 24 I was earning a full salary and deciding on my own how much to spend on my family and what to build and not build for my parent.

Having said all of these, deciding on building your artist’s parents a house and the money being the artist’s, smacks of a strategy of stealing money from artist qha!!!!!!!!!!!

illiteracy is at the root of all this. Just dig deep and ye shall find. The more illiterate you are, the more you need sound counsel (like a lawyer). I hate being pessimistic but this will not end well. By the time she releases a 2nd album and the fickle buying public has moved onto the next new thing, they will throw her out and confessions will start tumbling out.

I was listening to Zahara this morning on the breakfast show ku Mhlobo Wenene. They called her to ask her side of the story in all this. 1.She said she has matric and had enrolled at tertiary before she became "Zahara" meaning she knows what is a contract and there is no way she cannot have a bank account. 2. She said she has money to buy a car but cannot buy a car because she does not have a licence and she is in the process of getting one. She also said its ridiculous to buy 2 cars one to stay in the Eastern Cape since she is here in JHB and that she will never do and dont know what makes people tink she will ever do that. 3. A house she says she will buy when she wants to and not when she is pressurized to do so. 4. She says her parents are proud of her and the things she has done for them, and she knows what she still has to do for them. 5. About her living at the Ncizas its her choice and said she had lived with them for 18 months before her career took of, that time no one asked her who fed her, clothed her etc. She will move out and wont stay there permanently. 6. She also revealed that on the 1st April she got the royalties from her album sales from EMI not TS Records and into her bank account not TS's. 7. She said she is happy at TS and for now she will be with them for a long time. I think the siblings should look up to how the industry works. uZahara might have been getting money for performing in gigs and all. The "real" big money is this one from the CD sales which is the one she says she got. Mabakhe bamlinde kengoku bajonge uba what will she do. Its been 8 months for her in the industry so they just need to take a chill pill its her money afterall not theirs.

Sanalwam i hope all of that is true, then that would mean Zahara will be the best celebrity ever! the kind that does not take fame to the head and thanks God for her,

With everything happening in this world you just never know what to believe anymore. Maybe the newspaper stories were true and Zahara's managers told her what to say when she is being asked, you never know! I just hope whatever she said on radio is really her words and what she is really thinking. It is a dangerous world we live in

Once i gave my former colleagues (from Limpopo branch) a lift to their hotel after a function-we had to pass by my house (mom's place at the time)...because i had a senior position than theirs and worked at HO......they made noice about the company not being fair to me......."look at your house" THEY WERE SERIOUSLY ANGRY.......after they cooled down....I told them the company is paying me what we agreed......they dont offer bonds (i can apply if i want).......and its up to me what I do with my money

My sisters........on the other hand.......feels i owe them something.....that at their age (i was providing for the whole family at their age).....One would still say "how can i get a drivers' licence because those ppl you are talking about got money from their parents"..........and we are talking about someone given a family business on a platter........her money is for beauty....not for self development.
Shame its good to care for one another......mara really.(like my friend said last week)..MaAfrika! We like to rubish each other publicly.........if anyone cared (if she had a problem) could they not have adviced her privately........???

How many ppl hv been working for 10 years (with total income equal to that of Zahara in 8 months)......and still no cars...staying with parents or stuck in Randburg flats/townhouses??????

How many of us have built our parents houses??? mara...how many well-off ppl have built houses for their parents??????....we complain of our families dragging us back (financially) compared to other races....but throw damaging stones to others...she did not make her family poor.......she will help when she can....and if she wants to!

Its not good to be ripped off......and daily/each jobs we hold....we find that we are not paid for what its worth.....and oviously thats cruel......even more cruel .....is when someone runs to newspapers and spread stories that a certain company is not paying a certain CA.......their monies' worth

Firstly the house you are refering to as a next door house id Zahara's home which the sister says she only fitted cupborads kuyo.

Secondly Zahara is not being ripped off. If TS is to rip Zahara they will do it on a contractual base not on making her their maid and staying with them, that is Zahara's choice and NO she is not brainwashed to say this because whe she told me the same thing six months ago TK was not there and no one was telling her what to say. From what she told me all I can say she is a girl with her plan and her family is just being a typical black family, as long as useGoli unemali and even worse when you are a musician. They are just ignorant.

Sphokazi did exactly the same thing as Zahara, she used public transport(cabs) for a long time when she was already being celebrated all over , she then did her licence and bought a 1Series cash and a house in Midrand cash, as well as top of the range furnisher cash.

Not everyone in the music industry will live according to people's expectations and standards. I am not saying TS is not in any way cheating her, like any record company they may be doing that but that will be suttle and part of her contract based on percentages. She only got her millions last two weeks and that is a fact that you can call EMI and ask. Tjo hayi people like exagerating yho!

From my little knowledge of the industry, the artist is payed based on agreed percentages. I didn't know that the contracts now build houses and do pavings, that is new to me. If the family says Zahara has no cntract so what then entitles them to a house built by TS and a paving? TS has absolutely no obligation to do *bleep!* for that family, if TK did promise them anything it could have been based on the relationship they built with Zahara over the months. Typical greedy, jelous sister goin on about she only fitted cupboards, that's what she could afford, so what?

If you visited my home, you'd swear I was the worst person on earth ... And ignorant of the reality that the state of disrepair is my mother's wish! Well said Ntlewame, thanx Lela as well for that siphpkazi example. I just didn't know how to put it. I don't wanna have an opinion coz I bet there is more to the story than told. Oh infact Zahara is putting out her side of the story but no one wants to listen to that, may be a case of misery loving company..people are hell bent on believing the tabloid report, the horrible news, than her story...but anyway I'd like to believe that Zahara will do things in her own time. The car, the property, she will do it in her own time, not because it is expected of her. And I agree whatever she has done so far ko gabo is what she could now, she will do the rest with time or not,..whatever the case its nobody's business. Have the disgruntled people built their parents houses or even renovated, and even if you did, don't expect that other people will do it at your pace. Its to be a black child shem. Phds and overwhelming expectations...its just too bloody hard. I hope Zahara will not yiled to no one's pressures, and I pray that there is a decent explanation for this, infact untill proven otherwise, ill believe the explanation she gave to the radio station, as reported by @sanalwam

Besides ... It is very possible that the competition is agitating for discontent hoping Zahara will look at things and think she can do better elsewhere with the competition. After all ... Everybody knows how fickle, illiterate & shallow people in show bizznizz are ... Tupac & many other fallen artists fell for it when this exact situation crashed on him. Everybody can always get a better deal & contract ... But the risk generally outweighs the benefits. Mina all I am saying is that Zahara is NOT being ripped off, she is living a lifestyle that she has chosen for herself and it works for he. She has only just recieved her millions and she will take her time to do with them what she wants. As for uba are they cheating her in any way that is a story for another day and only God knows. Yes she will buy a car and a house in her time. She is not the first artist whose career startys soaring before she has a licence, she will obviously get a licence and buy a car so let's give the child a break. I don't think her family is wrong somehow because in African cultures the one person in the family who succeeds  is generally 'expected' to then help upgrade everyone else. U cant suddnely develop an attitude of you dont owe them anything . Yes it may be too soon to start complaining that she hasn't done anything for them yet but how many of us can make a R1m in 8months becos that is what is estimated to be her royalties at this point and all her cuts  from performance fees that are said to be in the range of  75 -90k per show surely she must have something-nyana to show for it by now. If I were u Zahara just do something for ur family dear sibusisiwe isandla esiphayo kunesamukelayo and just please them ur blessings will be multiplied ten fold and Life Goes On.

I think her sisters want her to build a mansion coz they know she is moneyed now. Eish you know some siblings! But ke at the same time we know that entertainment industry is full of SHARKS and hungry LIONS so i do smell a dead RAT but i'll stop right here.

Hawu guys about the cleaning i mean all of us when we are at someone else's home we do household work and leyo is just a voluntarily work. Kanti ninjani na bathong! You want her to eat, sleep and sing qha! HAIBO get real bafethu!

@Lela .... I'm saying I don't care about her financial matters and lifestyle choices... Her fams needs to get off their asses & go get jobs ... I used to give my mom 25k/ mo parental support until I realized she was passing it on to the worst al hoes in the family ... Now she gets half that in an account that sends me notifications! I'd love to give her 100k , but regardless of what I make, my money is not for anyone's play or luxury but me! This should not even be in the papers since Zahara is not crying "Victim!!!"

16 Apr 2012 13:30

This to me is smelling too much like a publicity stunt. SAMAs are around the corner, and Zaharas hype has died down a bit so what better way to remind people to vote for her than to create a scandal? In the morning TK was at Khaya fm he mumbled something about her having gone to some university, just could not catch which one cause he literally mumbled the name of the uni. They called her to say her side, she said she actually enjoys helping out around the house, nothing new or strange there.

The airtime story to me is just ridiculous! The picking up from the airport to me is also ridiculous! Zahara is going to East London to perform now logic is logistics and accommodation will be arranged for her. Now if she goes to East London for leisure or to visit her family TS records is not obliged to book her a car and anyway how will she drive that car engena licence? If ndiyagoduko I will call my sister or cousins whatever and tell them iflight yam ifika nini if they can they will come get me eairport or organise someone to come get me if not ndikhwela itaxi. Nothing cynical apho. Let us wait and see, Zahara says she's happy manje? The parents are not complaining manje? Imali ne talente yeyakhe manje? Come on people.

The prob with that Sunday World article was that it was the sista complaining so we not really sure abt the parents' stance on the whole issue. I know there's one artist cant rmb his name but he's an alcoholic who's said to be now renting a backroom in his mother's yard so if izinto ziyabheda at least she'll have a decent place to go back to.

OFF THE TOPIC

You may be ridiculed for acting your faith, but it’s for the moment; wait until you get what you’re asking for. The glory and joy of that miracle will completely overwhelm the ridicule. I was told of a certain woman who, as she made her way into one of our meetings, said to a cameraman, "Record me now, because when I go into that meeting, I’m coming out different." She was sick, invalid, but full of faith; and sure enough, during the service, she received a touch from the Lord and was gloriously healed. It pays to act your faith.

Shame man, that what she does for her family is now up for public scrutiny, as if extended family and neighbors scrutiny and pressure isn't hard enough. I feel for her, if I were her I'd retreat for a while and resume ekhaya when the masses are tired of pushing. My sister and I being the very few graduates in our neiborhood, those who knew were so happy expecting houses n cars (as if jobs fall from trees), and my mom told us to relax, we both took our time and did post grad studies and everytime we came home it was as if coming home to a small house is only wrong for us, and shem we anjoyed our lil house coz we knew we had plans, and if we ddnt its not their problem. And in our time, when they had resigned their pressures and expectations we are doing our thing at home, at our own pace. I'm no millionaire zahara, but I feel for her, regarding the pressure, and worst she is getting it from the whole country. She must take her time. Telling her charity begins at home when she probably has been contributing ko gabo waaaay b4 she became 'richer', even if it was with 20 bucks, she was practing the 'principle of charity begining at home' but ofcourse no one saw that. Blacks can be foolish indeed with their consumerism and materialism tendencies. And those that are shocked she doesn't have a drivers licence..'A car is a luxary' bla bla bla...lapho ke I'm just dumbfounded...smh.

Hao Cheesa what if she is happy and the Ncisas (sp) are happy to still have her. She has only been at this for less than a year, should the mentoring have been finished the minute her album drops? Because I would imagine RIGHT NOW its her best time for her to be protected and mentored if u will. Why is everyone rushing her to 'be indepenadant'..like they know her psych and what and when 'ready' is defined by in her life. Tbo touch just asked her 'ujola kuphi'?...if this is the kind of things that she is encouraged to move out for, then she is better of alone. And we all know once she moves out, entertainment industry leeches will be preying on her. 8 months is too short, she is better of where she is, and she nmust leave when she is ready, not when the masses think 'its time now'.

bomyy
16 Apr 2012 16:43

Lela whether she had moved or not, they would still have something to say about her. maybe that her mkhukhu is made of amazinki kanti as a celeb she should live in a mkhukhu owenziwe nge wooden planks. Its like that!

i agree with Ntlewame, they are dissapointed that she is not going around sleeping with whatever or seen doing drugs or something like that!

Green.arrow
16 Apr 2012 16:50

Well Cheesa perhaps Zahara prefers to adress her sisters privately. They can go back to the media and report what zahara said to them.

Green.arrow
16 Apr 2012 16:53

Also agree Ntle, they probably annoyed that while she is kwa ncisa (sp) they can't get to her and take advantage of her. They want her to be by herself and vulnarable, accessable to many other leeches who will bring scandals in her life for them to have stories. What the ncisas did for her is commendable in this fickle industry, this is outside of the scandal, and now something we were supposed to celebrate as black people is dragged down the mud. What is there for us to celebrate?

bomyy
16 Apr 2012 16:53

if uZahara or any other celeb can jump everytime the media and public complain then they would go mad! she might move out of the Ncizi's, buy her family sa house and buy herself a car. then they will say she dresses funny, she will go get herself a new designer, then they will say she lives in midrand, cheap lifestyle, then sen she will move to sandton, and so on. Zahara must just do what makes her happy and when it makes her happy

What's wrong with her giving the same answers every radio station. If u ever watched movie premier interviews as ONE example, the responses are the same, when people go on diff magazines as a PR drive, the story is usualy the same. Do you want the poor girl to give out mgozi so that yall can have more to tear her down bout? Tabloid journalists are sick, they need to be given the 'no commit' answer all the time, why appease them of all people coz they'll make stories up anyway., Indeed, one can never please the bloody nosey public. @Cheesa, LOL I'm thinking e bile Zahara needs to save on the bond she will be paying, I'd stick arround too if I was living there for free ;D, financial maturity may very well mean saving NOT buying a house to show u indeed have the moola.
