Why SA Needs a Black Idol

Written by makisto from the blog Frankly Speaking on 11 Oct 2010
Favourite this post

Warning: This is an opinion of the blogger and some may or may  not agree with what's written here. The blogger mantains that race is still an issue and that SA is still not colour-blind when it votes on Idols.

I don't watch Idols and have never watched the show except for this year when I find myself at a place where I can watch the talent competition in search of SA's next Idol. Essentially, I only watched the show twice when it was still scouting.

Sindi Nene

Is Sindi not talented and hard working enough to be SA's next Idol?

It is only this year that I religiously followed the show and can only do follow it in the media. Thus far, every article I have read talks about Sindi Nene's ernomous talent and every journalist use the 22-year old as their point of departure for their story. Why? Because it is clear that Sindi should win the competition but last week Sindi found herself lacking enough votes and the show's judges used their once in a season "save" to save Sindi from elimination. This means that on Tuesday 12 October, two contestants will be eliminated.

In yesterday's show, after Sindi sang Jeniffer Hudson's (Dream Girls) One Night Only and Beyonce's Single Ladies, she received a standing ovation from the judges and judge Gareth Cliff said: "This is the reason why we saved you. You were awesome" and judge Randall Abrahams, who is apparently hard to please, agreed with Gareth.

Sindi on stage
Despite her talent, some groups think she is just a bimbo

The lack of votes for Sindi in last week's episode confirmed two things.
1. In a talent competition, it's all about popularity and since M-Net, which broadcasts Idols, has 87% White viewers, White people will not vote for Sindi despite her talent. However, many Whites claim to be voting for her but why are we not seeing the proof in the pudding. After the judges saved her last week, I logged on my Facebook page and went saw a status update from a local magazine that said Sindi has been saved. Immediately white Facebookers started posting comments saying Sindi has got no talent and the lady said she's surprised that judges praise her after her hoggwash perfomance, and all this, written in Afrikaans. The magazine replied saying we shouldn't bring race into this but focus on talent, she then replied saying: "Ek is nie racist nie." Not all Whites who commented said Sindi didn't have talent but you could tell they were not voting for her.

Uyanda
Frank: Uyanda told Black people to start voting

2. Black people don't vote in talent shows. Once again, we are reminded of socialite Uyanda Mbuli's comments when she was voted off Strictly Come Dancing 2 saying "Black people must vote" and a race row started. Black people always talk about the legacy of apartheid and the argument can only be valid to a certain extent. I also am still suffering from the legacy of apartheid since I don't have DSTV but that doesn't mean I shouldn't vote for Sindi. As of last week, I went out of my way to find voting details and have started voting.

The Times newspaper earlier on in this season, ran an article about how White people vote on Mxit, landline and on two cell phones spending over R200 on their bills and the whole family votes. Esseentially, they use all platforms available to vote.

Sindi Nene
If you don't vote, tomorrow she will no longer be on Idols

Right now, it seems, for Sindi to win this talent search, the whole Black nation of SA must vote and vote for Sindi. It's time for transformation and Sindi must be the next Idol and probably the very first Black Idol.

Mara Louw has been criticised in the media by bringing race into the picture but the truth of the matter is, race has got everything to do with this competition. After last week's show, a friend of mine wrote on his Facebook page: "Tjeeer, this racist M-Net channel and Idols! Where is my R200.00? I going to give Sindi all the votes she can get". There is a lesson to be  learnt there. Why don't we all Black people vote for Sindi because we know talent she's got.

Idols judge Mara Louw
M-Net edits out Mara Louw's comments on race about the show

Writing in the Sunday Times's Lifestyle magazine yesterday, exucutive producer of shows like Tshisa, Charl Blignaut, said, Only in South Africa, can race dominate a talent show. M-Net also edits out Mara Louw's comments about race after filming.

Transformation has got everything to do with race and where people are competent, we need to give them what they deserve and if it means buying R5.00 airtime to vote Sindi, South Africa, why don't you do that? I have noted with great concern that the entertainment industry is still lacking when it comes to transformation equitties especially where voting involves money because most Black people are stinch.

Rare coverage: Joelle Kayembe on FHM cover
FHM's last Black cover was back in July 2008

FHM magazine always has white women on their cover, the last time they had a black model on their cover was in July 2008 when Joelle Kayembe was their cover star. Men's Health magazine always has white men on the cover. The last Black cover model was Jammie Fox in 2008.

Joelle Kayembe told FHM in 2008 that she will be pleased if she can occupy the no 1 spot on their annual 100 sexiest women in the world because she would be the first black woman to reach that spot. Though I have been casting my vote and including Joelle in every vote, I also vote for other white models, still Joelle doesn't take the number 1 spot. As for the GQ magazine, they have opted for splitting their mag specifically for Whites and Blacks by having different cover stars but same content. I'm still waiting to see White characters in Generations. Heat Magazine just surprised me today by having a Black person, Mara Louw on their cover as their lead cover feature and just because she is Black, I bought the tabloid magazine for the first time in 11 months.

Joelle is for lunch anytime baby
Despite being an African chocolate, Joelle still doesn't get the number 1 spot on the annual FHM Sexiest women in the world in the mag's every June issue.

Back to Idols, if Sindi Nene survives tomorrow, it would be because Black peoplehave noticed that Sindi does need those votes from Black folks.

To vote for Sindi, SMS 3 to 37400 (R1.50 per SMS. VAS rates apply. No free minutes) or call 0839010203 and your vote will automatically be counted for Sindi. To see how to vote for other contestants, please go to http://mnet.dstv.com/idols/News/495/how-to-vote

Transformation transformation transformation transformation transformation. We need a Black Idol.

I must admit that i have not voted for Sindi but for Boki.  Yesterday, she was very impressive and she is talented.  I am still not going to vote for her because i know that she will make it...i am yet to see a successful Idols winner and i don't want her winning only for the prices , i want to see her performing and releasing a brilliant album.  Boki deserves to win, he works hard and i have loved him from when i saw him auditioning.  I refuse to believe that we don't vote enough, last week Sindi was not at her best , hence she was in the bottom two.  It's time for Elvis and Pieter to leave..

I think that maybe it boils down to taste or preferance ya music. And generally white people dont like the same music as bkack people by a wide margin. So if DSTV has 87% viewership, the R200 concidered, a black person is very much unlikely to win.
Similarly, on SABC TV a white person is unlikely to win because with the 90% black SA majority, white voters with their R200 dont stand a chance.
So i suspect that its not that black people dont vote, its a reflection of things beyond anybody's control. Demographics, and so the associated personal preferances.

This happens every season, at least the ones that I've seen. Mara gets a lot of heat for mentioning it because the viewers get defensive and think she's personally calling them racist, but there are undeniable racial, cultural, and gendered dimensions to voting patterns. I don't believe most of it is consciously racist.

That said, there are a couple of other things that I think are hurting Sindi. She's a girl so she's not benefiting from the horny tannie and tween voting blocs the way the boys are. Notice how Lloyd and Boki are pretty popular among all races.

There's also a backlash factor. When a contestant is perceived as being a judge's favourite or heavily pimped to win, often a lot of people get turned off by them. Sindi's gotten a lot of praise and the assertion that she MUST win is likely making viewers resentful. It's a popularity contest after all, and taste is subjective.

Sindi gave a very good perfomance last night, I agree with GA that last week she was not at her best, if black people do not vote, how do you then explain Elvis and Boki's surviving without being in the bottom 3 so far.... I honestly think it is based on perfomance.. Boki might leave this tuesday, I did not feel his perfomance this week...

Magazines have target audiences who are their loyal readers. I stand to be corrected but FHM is not a popular magazine with us muntuz, partly because we are not their primary target audience and our black community has not fully embraced such mags...we know our men love the mag but find it difficult to buy or keep such mags in fear of the girlfriends, wives etc

It's like demanding that True Love must have white celebs in their cover.
The reality is that the market is segmented into various categories and publishers are really guided by the response they get from their audience.

I think we all racist: e.g. whenever a white woman wins Miss SA, no one gives a hoot about her, she  is never featured in black mags.. I would like to read about cherel devilliers but True Love, Move, Bona wouldn't feature her!

Re: Transformation,
Is it possible in this kind of a situation (show business and the like)?.
Yes, but only when it is fluid and not forced like it can be forced in the work place and in politics.
Maybe 2 generations after ours children's (black and white) tastes or preferances are no longer influenced by race, or stereotytpes attached to those games/music genres/etc as passed on by parents.
For now we must let people do what they enjoy, vote fpr whom they like because they prefer what they are doing. It may be indirectly a race thing (indeed sometimes it directly a race thing but not always) , but untill transformation of the mind happens, we cant do nothing about it.

In General:
In this country transformation should be a two way street. We need more black people in Rugby and cricket...so we need more white people in soccer.
I remember reading story a while back about a scholarship fund for white girls which recieved complaints and so the courts ruled that the "white girls"  should include evrybody...transformation right?..but we yet its acceptible for the same thing to happen on the opposite end.

Thanks Makisto for writing a blog on this, I wanted to but time

i agree with GA, though am not oblivious of the race thing.

black people only know how to vote for the ANC and it's free but u can sumtyms get food parcels and emopty promises even when they're getting mediocre services y shld white people all of sunday(pun intended) vote for other blacks in talent shows. lol

to be honest the reason am voting for her is bcos she's talented.

if there was an equally talented white person on the show I wld not vote for him/her reason being that I know white people will vote for that person nomakanjani.

white people are supportive of each other and they sumtyms have the resources to do that.

am voting for her bcos a lot of white okes and black ones won't vote for her, which I think it's unfair for such a talented young lady, her vocal cords r out of dis world.

11 Oct 2010 22:48

sigh - I get so sad when I think about it (the racial profiling that is. Why can't people just recognise talent! I hope Sindi sticks around -but even if she does not a star is born anyway! Look at Zamajobe and the like (she only got as far as 9 on Idols and has carved out an amazing career; or Jacques who only got to 3 - who even won that year? does it even matter now?)!  I like Boki but been feeling that his last few performances very lacklustre. Lloyd has got alot of soul and is so likeable. THought that Pieter West did a good job with the Bruce Sprinsteen song but am not really a fan. I like Elvis Blue alot! Adeline is a good performer but she does not really have a good voice at all.

i feel i need to clear this one once and for all as we are forgetting some valuable facts about this.
Rugby and Cricket were sports for whites only due to apartheid, black people were not allowed to play in these sports, whereas in soccer it is a different tune all together whites were never restricted in plying play soccer, they were more than welcomed hence we had the Neil tovey's of this world.
The reason black people will always demand a black face in rugby and cricket is because we have talented players of these sports but coaches or talent scouts even today overlook them and prefer the white blood that is a fact.

So GA whites in soccer whites can only be there when they get intersted and show some respect for the game, their schools dont even offer soccer in their extramural activities, most  whites schools dont even want to hear the word soccer, for instance, in Centurion one school had a very bad fight with most black parents as they did'nt want to include soccer in their activities, parents had to fight and petition as the school thought the best sports are hockey, cricket and rugby.

Makisto man the demographics explanation from GA is the only thing against Sindi for now, yes maybe the will one or two whites who wont vote for her colour, it's true that balcks are stingy as i also wont spend R200 to save her , sorry man life is not that giving to just throw away money like Mbalula and Malema.  she is talented even if she doesnt win idols, she will conquer the music industry one day that is for sure.
Cnglmother- coloureds fall under blacks why hate the Bala boy for marrying one, lol..., even Andile ka-Khumbul' khaya is married to one.

If its a fact then id support any campaignn that pushes for transformation in this regard.

Perhaps i should not have argued transformation in sport alongisde transformation in showbusiness, but there is a thin line between the two. My point i repeat, is that based on the fact that people have diffrent preferances; some preferances are undoubtably influenced by background and with our fresh racial history, some preferanaces are influenced by apartheid borne stereotypes...based on that, transformation in this case should not be pushed, but allowed to fluidly happen as transformation of people's hearts and minds happen. And that i see happening a couple of generations from ours.

It took 40 yrs+ after civil rights acts or something in america, for america to have a black president, and that was a reflection of the transformed prespectives of the majority white amricans who voted for him..My opinion.
It was about politics and who presented a bteer argument as opposed to race, to the extent, there are black americans who voted fo mccain.
We will get there..espcially in the emotional and sentiments driven showbusiness world.

i have been a silent blogger for awhile only pop-in now and then. What i am about to say hopefully will not be taken too far....I know you wre explaining the name thing to Sarocks but i feel you need to take half the blame of the way you handle bloggers.

lol, it's easier this way to seperate the writer and the commenter. I miss interacting in debates on article. You know what used to happen when i would comment on the articles I wrote, people starting getting personal. Makisto can do it but I can't hence the separation of two names. Atleast some people won't make the unnecessary connections if they are new here.

Let me tell you the main reason people get personal with you:
1. You tend to reply only to people who differ with your opinions and everytime you alwsy sound like you wnt to win the argumenyt
2. Makisto have no favourites in his blog, he gets to engage with everyone that contributes in his blog, you dont, you jump a name you dont know  and reply to your favourites or enemies. new or old treat every blogger the same way.
3.  One time i read a piece you were quitting and telling people about your soulmates  and your new TV show now the honeymoon is over you are back(which i am happy too), so i am sure bloggers feel you only need them when bored.
4. I think you are an excellent writer but try to also learn to stop thinking everyone is  hating you when they dont agree with you and you get to be react wrong when put in the corner,  like a Drama Queen.
5. Lastly i know Makisto wont admit that he feels like me right now, Sarocks it was way out of line of you to come and say you you have seen this artIcle before here, even if they read the same you should have given Makisto the respect that you give Phil all the time. Phil admit it Makisto is giving you a run for your money now, hence you come and spill unnecassary replies in his blog you should have replied to the topic and talked with Sarocks on the side.

lolment...if we were to vote by sending "PLEASE CALL SINDI" Sindi was gonna be the first black Idols winner...we were gonna send all ten call backs everyday.

But I once read about former Miss SA Tatum Keshwar in Drum magazine. But I do agree that our mags have their own target audience and so they have to provide their audience with what they need and can relate to.For instance we hardly see black schlebs on YOU mags and hardly see whites on DRUM.

So our media are the ones perpetuating these racial lines

pele

So our media are the ones perpetuating these racial lines;

I will have to say YES or NO  lejazz, media is business and it is a known fact that whites and blakcs dont have the same tastes or prefernces in things. South Africans wont be united by magazines at all, we first have to reach a stage where we see eye to eye, which i think it will happen in the next generations to come as our kids are leaning more about the western kind of life..
NO because -Drum cant force blacks to relate to whites and YOU cant force whites to relate to blacks, the will be one race who wants to dominate the other ansd we all know waht are the results of  that.

Yes because we can try and research more on how to leanr to cater for all races in one mag or paper..

GA I think the point raised by Cloud9 the backlash factor will count against her, as no one will want to vote for an obvious winner.

makisto
12 Oct 2010 09:14

Similarly, on SABC TV a white person is unlikely to win because with the 90% black SA majority, white voters with their R200 dont stand a chance.
But GA, I voted for Emmanuel Castis in the finale of Strictly Come Dancing because he faired better than Trevor Noah and he won.
I don't believe most of it is consciously racist.
It is indeed not so but why do White people lie and say we vote for Sindi and "I'm White". Valid and crucial points you are raising Cloud9.

The reality is that the market is segmented into various categories and publishers are really guided by the response they get from their audience.
This is true but there magazines such as FHM and Men's Health that are aimed at but not limited to both White and Black men. A Black model once in year wouldn't hurt. True they are guided by their audience but magazines have got a responsibility to cleverly show their audience that they need to have a Black model every once in a while. They can start by having them as their second biggest feature that can be equated to a cover model but put a pic on the bottom on the cover and say something like 3 pages of Bonang's bare photos or a model who isn't on soapies or popular shows as that's what guides their covers.
They seem the same but this one is more like PR for Sindi whereas Phil's was about the show and Gareth's comments.
Tltltltltltltl, Phil, but true. This article is indeed PR for Sindi and that was the intention but at the end of the day, I still told people that if they want to vote for other contestants, they go go see the voting details and vote for their fave contestants. This article also aims to highlight race issues in the entertainment industry.
it's true that balcks are stingy as i also wont spend R200 to save her , sorry man life is not that giving to just throw away money like Mbalula and Malema
But Pele you can buy R12 airtime or even R5 airtime and vote. Or better yet, vote on Mxit for R0.02 per vote.
One time i read a piece you were quitting and telling people about your soulmates
BM you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that, but sometimes it's better if we don't say some things and just let them be.
Lastly i know Makisto wont admit that he feels like me right now,
Lol
Sarocks it was way out of line of you to come and say you you have seen this artIcle before here
I haven't seen the article maybe it was written when I was busy at work but what I do know is that even though angles may be the same, style and tone cannot be the same unless it is plagiarism, i.e Phil wrote an article about Lira's talent and I write something similar a while back but the two articles are totally different.
Phil admit it Makisto is giving you a run for your money now
But we are not in a competition. Anyway, if you need to clear your throat, who am I to sto you?
i am very sorry for this but i have been quite long enough.
You can pop in every now and agai like you are doing now.

i know it's a talent competition but how many of us have been helped by some people one way or the other, giving u transport money to go to school, helping with registration fees tsa ko tertiary, buying you the outfit for ur first job interview the list is endless, that's how we are as people especially blacks (spirit of unbuntu) ...i guess maddie we are even more apprehensive with our R1.50 s because we already in our true ubuntu spirit help out those closer to home with the things you mention, so we dont feel very bad bcos we do help out

no one will want to vote for an obvious winner. ...Very weird though pele, but i ve heard this logic it a lot...and seen it a lot,i guess then otherwise she must rest assured coz she may do well even better than the winner,if she doest win.

And i must say...i dont watch idols...lenna the apartheit legacy has dstv shortchanged me..lol. But i saw her (sindi) performance here and there, ko gae and  on youtube..and im not a fan. Will might elaborate later...

That's true. Those people pay less rent on water and electricity and some even get water for free. You may be paying for your bond, car, children education, hefty electricity and water bills. What do they pay? Car instalmentys only!!!!!!!

What do you mean pay less!! They pay niks for services and soon they will be getting free medical attention for free.

Idols is aimed particularly at white viewership, therefore you cannot blame the voting patterns.

Take Jika ma jika, who is it aimed at? Even the name will tell you who it is aimed at. The problem with us blacks is that we like to gate crash and when things don’t go our way we blame apartheid and racism.

12 Oct 2010 10:32

I have watched SA Idols since the beginning and its disappointing when the most talented does not win, which is what happens in these reality shows like SYTYCD, Popstars and Idols, its normally the favourite that wins.

I personally don't dig Sindi not because of the colour of her skin or anything like that, her singing does not appeal to me at all, I'm loving Lloyd, Boki and Elvis and colour has nothing to do with it. I could ask, why there were no coloureds in this year's top 14, why only whites and blacks but it doesn't matter to me, coloured, white, black is not an issue, I'm gonna vote for who my favourite is and right now, its Lloyd, then Boki then Elvis, if these three are safe tonight, I'm happy.

I just hope Sindi's save last week hasn't affected one of my boys leaving tonight.....

The last time we had great black singers in the Idols competition was the very first one, can't remember her name now but she sang "black velvet" pretty good, then in the second season off course, we had runner up Poseletso.
I am hoping that a black person wins this year, by time, but I'm hoping it will be Lloyd or Boki.

Here we *bleep!* go again. I think I'm gonna just blog on tvsa at night because the night bloggers seem to have some brain and a bit of sense of humour. BM that was unnecessary and totally out of order.

BM: I have been quiet long enough

Thank God for that coz you are clearly a dumbass. The comment that Phil made was in relation to a question that was supposed to be funny by sarocks hence the LOLs and HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. And what is the guy supposed to do when someone asks him a question, ignore them? If he did that you will be calling him a snob or too big-headed.

The guys were having fun with their responses last night that's it so your huffing and puffing has no ground.  These writers are too polite. I would tell you were to get off if you impose your dumbness on me. You missed the point why not just shut up and ask yourself why you are the only one who had a problem with the comments?

@Makisto. Don't let this idiot stir up things that aren't there. Last night's comments were about fun. Sorry for the language but I just had to to get the message across

Of all the "Black" finalists on SA Idols my fave was Tender from Season 4 - the girl who was HIV+  She was very powerful live without being OTT (I think that maybe that is a factor that puts many people off Sindi). - I am sad that we hadnt seen much of Tender afterwards. Anyone have an update??

Just my 2 cents worth,

This article should read, WHY SA DOES NOT NEED AN IDOL.

Personally I think this competition is a waste of time, we are never going to reach the american standards we do not have the capacity to make big stars, we have proven this several times with the idols we have produced.

Shows that must never see the light of day in South Africa, IDOLS, BIG BROTHER, POPSTARS, (i have to add this one... lol forgive and forget lol)

Reality shows do not work that well locally because the way they are franchised they are not tailor made for our audience, on top of that they go onto platforms where the audince share is not even split properly, how do you then expect these shows to be fair and represent the real south african audience?

how do you then expect these shows to be fair and represent the real south african audience?
.....i dont expect that anytime soon, a lot will have to change. A LOT.

BM...i think its the taste/preferance thing. I dond like the screams either....hence im not a Sindi fan, nor a J Hudson fan ( dont like that one night only song)...and many other "screaming" singers that a lot of people like.
PS: nexxus and i call it screaming, no offence intended, some may call it "soulfull performance"..?

I know a lot of people who dont like what Mary J blige did to the One song by U2 when they redid it with her....they argue she over screamed the song?
Its a preferance thing...i know lot of my friends haaaate my music, apparently its boring?

Ya Tizoz u r very right...we do not need MNET IDOLS to mould great singers...because after winning this competitions..the winners just vanish into thin air...look what happened to Karin Kortje,Sasha Lee Davids,Ghetto lingo,Adilah,101 etc..they are nowhere to be found.I think the best solution is "BLACK FOLKS MUST NEVER EVER AGAIN ENTER FOR MNET IDOLS PERIOD" Akere we don't buy You magazine and whites do not buy Drum mag..so that  will at least ease this racial cards that are always brought in from food, shops, court trials to residential areas, schools, varsities etc etc......

Sindi should not despair about not winning the Mnet Idols...I know some great producer is watching her and soon she will be in the studio recording the smash hit.Phela with competition like Idols is all about winning that Ford ,half a million and a chance to record one album then that's the end...so I don't want to see Sindi getting trapped in that Mnet Idols tendency.

@Makisto you are right...at my home place there are DSTV dishes on shacks(mokhukhu),RDPs and matchboxes houses...

We need Idols, Big Brother, Popstars because they provide exposure and uncover talent. If it were not for these shows we wouldn't have known about Sindi, Pam Andrews, ZamaJobe etc. These shows are not only about winning but utilising the exposure and the plartform made available to contestants, to sell themselves as much as possible. it is what you do after the show, some work hard and get record deals, connect themselves with relevant people in the industry and do very well....like Thembisile...

On Idols, there was a girl Zintle from KZN, she did not win but I think she must persue Theatre, do plays singing and acting...she will do well...

Who is the real SA audience?

pkpage
12 Oct 2010 13:00

I think since we on the race issue let me take my piece of the pie.

Mnet is more than 80% white viewed and you expect Black people to win and on top of that you talk transformation.

Transformation is not the responsibilty of the Black folk. We have been doing so much of that they have looked at us as if we are begging them now.

Well history has proved to me that winners of these competitions in SA have a very short stay in the lime light. Even if Sindi didn't win and she is as talented as you praise her, then she is gonna be spotted and will do great. Actually better than the winner (this is a view based on what history has proved).

As for Blacks not voting I'm not sure so I won't really say. But talking about me I've voted in most shows I've watched and my vote was not based on race rather than talent. I won't list but the think you have talent show, popstars, more including the Idols.

makisto

Who is the real SA audience?
Realist, I would say the real SA audience is Black people as they are the majority in this country but that doesn't mean we should marginalise the Whites as they also matter but we need to strike a blanace on thingz we do and someone said it will take us 2 or 3 generations to get there. Hence Madiba said the government must represent the colours of the nation hence you have White, Indian and Black ministers in a Black government.

Makisto, percentage wise; how many black people watches Idols since they are the real SA audience?

blaqueboi
12 Oct 2010 13:35

I know it's blasphemy in SA to say anything negative about Madiba but I will say it again. The biggest blunder in his leadership legacy was to push this rainbow nation farce on this nation. Race will always be an issue and it should be. To expect us to be colour blind and suddenly embrace each other's differences is a noble ideology but very impractical.

The race issue will always come up because our cultures are too vastly different and this is more poignant in our entertainment industry. We have black & white entertainment. We can try and merge the two but deep down in our psyche we will always lean towards our kind. Even while watching American shows you inevitably end up rooting for the black contestant.

We can acknowledge each other but when it comes to the crunch we will stick to our race.  You are not being racist when you vote for a black winner but it's the brother/sister thing that compels you to want him/her to succeed. It happens on gender issues too. That's life.

makisto

Oh, now I understand Realist.
The biggest blunder in his leadership legacy was to push this rainbow nation farce on this nation.
It's not criticising him, you are just saying what is your opinion and it is indeed a good ideology and I think it must be talked about as many bloggers say, Phil, I think it will it be achieved in three of four generations down the line but certainly not i nour generation. It isn't really a blunder per se but maybe over-ambitious.

blaqueboi
12 Oct 2010 13:58

Just curious: How many of you who insist that Idols should have a black winner own a POP albumn?

This is a pop competition for a pop loving audience. Loyiso can not even sell albumns with his mixture of pop and R&B. Denim is struggling to make a mark even with their single that are hits on pop radio stations. Whereas Louise Carver, The Parlotones, Wonderboom, Nianell, Josie Field, Heinz Winkler and etc are selling well. Idols is aimed at a white audience who are in turn the pop buying market. Now to insist that a Black person win simply because we live in a black continent is just unrealistic

Yes, Sindi can win but will she be able to crack it in the pop market? I would be just as glad if she doesn't win because the exposure will open doors for her where she wouldn't have to be dictated to when it comes to the genre of music she wants to do.

realist
12 Oct 2010 14:08

Precisely

more poignant in our entertainment industry. We have black & white entertainment.
Because our cultures are different.

The problem with black entertainment industry is that they want to make 100% profit in anything that they produce. If your production does not attract revenue from advertisers you will not make any money out of that production hence you see the Americans canning any production that does not attract revenue.

realist

blaqueboi

Jen Hud didn't win. She was in the top 10.

Ruben Studdard won and he came out with an R&B albumn. Needless to say, it was a total flop.

Jordin Sparks was smart enough to merge the two genres hence she made a mark (though small as it were).
