Africa rallies behind Ghana in the WC

It comes as no surprise that the entire continent (52 countries that is) is now rallying behind the Black Stars as they are the only remaining African team in the 2010 Fifa World Cup to have progressed this far.
Ghana flag

Accra - the capital city of Ghana - reports Fifa.com, is abuzz with euphoria about their boys having made it this far. Excuse me, it's our fellow African boys = political leaders have asked us all to rally behind them, including the Minister of Home Affairs, Nkosasana Dlamini-Zuma. As Ghana prepares to crush Uruguay on Friday 2 July 20:30 sharp, the support for the Black Stars  is gaining momentum with the entire continent hoping that a miracle may happen on the African soil.

Ghana win
Ghana started the tournament on a high pace by becoming the very first African team in the 2010 Fifa World Cup to register a win when they beat Serbia by 1-0 on their first game on 13 June. The team went ahead and had a 1-1 draw with Australia. They then lost 1-0 to Germany - which finished third in the 2006 World Cup held on their home soil - but bounced back with vigour.  With sheer determination, Ghana went ahead and enrolled for its second win when they ousted the mighty United States from the World Cup by a 2-1 victory. The US took second place in the 2009 Confederations Cup.

The Black Stars have won the Africa Cup of Nations four times and they made history last week when they became the third African team in Fifa history to reach the World Cup quarter finals. During the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, the team finished second.

man of the moment
In an articled titled Africans eye Ghanaian glory Fifa.com reports that Ghana is on the brink of writing a new chapter in the history of African football at the Fifa World Cup finals. And, as the only African side still left in the competition, reports Fifa.com,  the rest of the continent, including some of its most celebrated football stars, are united in backing the Black Stars.

As Ghana paddle down unfamiliar waters to the land of the unknown, continues Fifa.com, the streets in Accra have been gripped by the fever of expectancy. Says Fifa.com, while no-one has been underestimating the might and strength of the Uruguayans, the Black Stars have played with skill, passion, tenacity and, most importantly, they have looked like a side with a plan and a strong will to execute it.

Ghana fan flag
SA football player Tshepo Masilela told Fifa.com: "From day one, I knew that they would do well. Considering what they achieved in the African Cup of Nations with a youthful squad, I believe they can go even further. We all support them now," he said referring to their second-place finish in Angola earlier this year. Steven Pienaar also spoke with the world football body website content writers, "We hoped that there would be more African teams to play in the knock-out stages, but I guess the most important thing is to support whichever African side goes forward. Ghana are a quality side, they have some good players and they have the potential," said the Everton man.

Also Samuel Eto'o of the Cameroon squad told Fifa.com: “They are a young side and are full of potential. They are not only representing their country, but the African continent. I wish them all the best and I believe they have what it takes to advance further in this competition."

ghana coach
With a perfect and mersmerising writing, Fifa.com may just as well be predicting the outcome of the 2010 World Cup and perhaps even summed the whole thing up: "Ghana will flirt with fate and destiny when they face Uruguay in what is expected to be a pulsating quarter-final at Soccer City on Friday night. A berth in the last four at the finals would be an unprecedented feat for an African side, and the Black Stars camp and the rest of Africa are fully aware that the team are on the verge of penning their own fairytale ending with the likes of Asamoah Gyan, John Mensah and the rest as heroes. The third African side to qualify for the quarter-finals, Ghana could be forgiven for dreaming of lifting Africa's first FIFA World Cup Trophy, on 'home' soil no less."

I wish them well.

However, having seen Ghana and Uruguay play, I believe I can say Uruguay is the better side.

I went to Soccer City to watch Ghana play and I left there frustrated at their lack of urgency. I'm hoping they work on this because Uruguay is a fast paced team that knows how to move the ball forward.

I will support Ghana but at eh same time, i'm leaving room for disappointment.

We indeed do need to leave room for disappointment so we don't faint after a possible loss but we need to support these guys as you say. Let's be hopeful about it team making it further in the competition. M busy getting pictures

Thats the thing.. maybe it's an African attitude... no wonder we come up with opening ceremonies that are chaotic. Coz we somehow dont see anything wrong with displaying mediocrity. mciim.

The day I saw Nigeria play with that S.Korea thats when I decided to sell my african birthright at least until the 11th July...

I am not supporting Ghana mina... black star my black a**.

Hao, come on now Carino, they are our fellow brothers and Africans. In my article about Bafana Bafana Scores Triple Punishment, someone commented that it was easy for me to write the article and said when you are on the pitch it isn't as easy as writing that article. I'm just saying what a fellow blogger commented. I am more of the opinion that no matter how we play, a win is a win. Of course there are technical sides that must come ionto play but at the end of the day, when you won, you won. No questions about it.

@Holiday, if One and Only said that, everyone will be wanting to skin him alive. And still the threats of burning our so called brothers and sisters are circulating around. Ghana is representing Ghana as realist said.
Why must we be united by soccer? My son is for Dunga, so l will go with him as well.

Thank you Best-Achiever, a win is a win. Kana ge re phela there is this thing of a sense of belonging. A Mokwena is not only for the Mokwenas if he does something great but also for the community where he comes from. Even though you may have had quarels with people in your community, when it comes to celebrating your achievements, they all do, at least in a community that understands ubuntu and Africanism. I am all the behind Ghana and I support them shem. of course, even in those celebrations by the community celebrating that Mokwena's achievement, you will still find people with funny intentions. In essence, all I'm saying let's go back to what being an African is all about. If we understand that, we will rally behind this team. Hence people always say if you don't know where you come from, you will not understand where you are going. We come from Africa and we are going with Ghana, an African team, in these quarter finals. Sport has a way of unifying people, dark or blue((((*hides*))))! I don wanna dwell in the whole xenophobia thing but those horibble crimes were from people in squatter camps who have been disappointed by the very same people they keep on showing confidence in by voting for them time and over again. Now we need to say Ghana all the way.

Mina I'm not supporting Ghana....I admire what they have done and wish them well....but my heart is just not there.

I won't support a team simply because of their geographic location....for me it's Brazil all the way....and I have a soft spot for Argentina.

I am supporting Ghana, not only because they are an african team but because they truly played well and deserve to be in the quarter finals.

They are a young team full of potential and have everything to play for. Their challenge has been at scoring goals but in their last game they worked hard and scored 2. compared wiith Nigeria, Cameroon, Bafana, Ivory Coast, they are playing very well

It doesn't mean that you don't have to support another team, I support Argentina but we are coming together as the continent to support the only team left in the tournament, just like Europeans, North Americans will do 'family support' kinda of thing...

The reality is around the world, most soccer fans support Brazil, Spain, england, Germany etc but when home teams or a team representing the continent plays there is nothing wrong with supporting them

nice
01 Jul 2010 16:29

i will be carrying my Ghana flag at the stadium tomorrow, makisto and will hoping that they win against Uruguay.

First because they are an African team, and secondly because I want them to avenge SA. Uruguay are the reason we didnt make it to the top 16. They beat us by 3-0. Ndisebuhlungu ngesosibhaxu

Can you imagine, how happy will Uruguay be when they beat Ghana, they will think that they beat the whole of Africa. When my black star fades, then I will rally behing Argentina. When Diego's boys fail me too, then it shall be Brazil

heh heh eish but I understand where you gusy are coming from, my heart was never with Bafana Bafana at all...no matter how much I tried to convince myself....

when people were excited, calculating points for us to qualify for the next round, I was thinking of the embarassment when we meet Argentina's, Brazil so for me it was good they did not go forward I did not have confidence in them, I did not even want to watch their matches!!

But I understood the idea of uniting behind the team and supporting them

Ghana, I did not care in the beginning, never followed their team until I saw their matches and I was convinced!! I dont fear for them tomorrow, I think they have an equal chance of winning the game..

02 Jul 2010 10:26

Now we are stealing Ghana's shine bathong
But I heard one of the players on radio, at a Metro FM event last night where Ghana president and our former pres Thabo Mbeki were attending, calling themselves BaGhana BaGhana<players> = which according to me, Pele will agree with me on this one since he knows about unpacking a simple phrase= that Ghana is ready to share their glory with the rest of the African continent, be it Bafana Bafana or Cameroon lol!

Sobza
02 Jul 2010 10:30

They once again proved they are a force to be reckoned with when they walloped Germany 1-0

Uyaxoka ke makisto.....Ghana lost that game 1-0, do your research thoroughly neh? So far Ghana have won 2, drew 1 and lost 1.

I am also supporting Ghana but I don't think they have been that impressive especially when they are going forward. They are not lethal at all, Brazil, Spain and Argentina attack with vigour which is something I have not seen in Ghana's style of play, but they are composed at the back. They might make it through to the semis but I think that is where their journey will end.

pele
02 Jul 2010 10:33

Vesa, you dnt support Gahna so why the concern now? besides this is showing them they are close to our hearts like our boys, no harm or stolen moments intended. AND THEY DONT MIND TU....

hhayi I disagree they are Black Stars... actually Thabo Mbeki in another interview suggested they are called 'African Stars'....much better....why do we want to associate them with Bafana Bafana..

and the ANCYL is calling for the head of the Minister of Sports Makhenkesi Stofile...I asked after the unite for bafana parade when someone noticed the tjatjarag gauteng premier on the bus with bafana next to parreira ukuthi where is the minister of sport, is he not supposed to be playing some visible role....we know this is the FIFA gig but the GP Premier has been very visible and active, she is even hosting an event for Ghana tonite ...Sport Dept is very quiet!!.
