Stenberg shot to fame in her role as Rue in the box office hit The Hunger Games, alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. For her performance in the film she won a Teen Choice Award in 2012 with Jennifer Lawrence and was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award and a Black Reel Award.

Stenberg made her movie debut in Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too?, followed by a breakout role as the young Cataleya Restrepo (played by Zoe Saldana) in Colombiana.

In 2013, Stenberg had a guest-starring role on Fox's Sleepy Hollow and in 2014 did voice-over work in Rio 2, alongside Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway.
