I am bothered. No, I am actually worried about my relationship with drinking alcohol.
Social drinking is as popular as carrying branded water bottles at a gym even though u hardly take a sip from the bottle. For as long as I can remember I hated the smell of beer and could not understand how people become addicted to such a foul smelling drink. It didn’t help that this drink made people act terribly foolish and their company tiresome. Nothing beats being in the company of drunk people who suddenly entertain the notion that they are comedians. Triple sigh!
So it was by chance that I stumbled upon an alcoholic beverage called espirit and it was love at first taste for me. Not having any kind of income meant that I only indulged during the X-mas and New Year festivities. It was no wonder then that when I started earning an income and an opportunity to drink presented itself, I wouldn’t hesitate to order my favourite drink at the time…Espirit Kiwi flavour. I was still an occasional drinker then.
Whatever it is that happened and caused the disappearance of the Kiwi flavour from bottlestores left me in a bit of a dilemma. Do I stop my association with good old alcohol forever or do I write a passioned plea to the makers of Espirit about returning my lost love? I then tried other flavours of the beverage but never really warmed to them like I did the Kiwi flavour.
Enter Brutal Fruit. Yho! Yho! Yho! At first I drank it cause I convinced myself that the bottle has a very beautiful shape. I mean I thought I could have one and just keep the bottle on my ‘dressing table’ to admire.
Anyone that is a cider drinker can agree that at the time Brutal Fruit made its entry all the other brands of cider were packaged in similar shaped bottles. Here was a drink that was both pleasing to the eye and the tongue. A taste SENSEtation, I called it! Even though it couldn’t measure up to the nostalgic memories of my Espirit days, the kiwi brutal fruit matched it in taste.
Alas, I must have been a minority drinker because this drink UNBELIEVABLY disappeared as well. No forewarning, no chance given to bulk-buy it, NADA! Like it went into some Bermuda triangle! I wasn’t sighing anymore. I was being messed up. I was fuming-even wrote a letter to which I didn’t get a response. Nxxx to the power of 10!
Then I had a brief encounter with Woolies berry cooler, then 4 cousins and quickly outdrank my familiarity with the drink. I am now sick of 4 bazala. They shouldn’t have introduced those 3L bottles!
 
So now here I am mixing Amstel and sprite (try it!) because Cosmos don’t come cheap and I am wondering if I am on the road to obtaining the serious drinker’s accessory…the phuza face!
And on the matter of the phuza face, just H-O-W does that settle in on a person’s face? I mean I understand that beer and a flat tummy are sworn enemies but how does beer cause a phuza face? My friend figures that when you’re constantly getting sloshed, your face takes on a certain expression and if you continue drinking excessively, the expression sets in you then get the phuza face.

By the time i was 14 years I was drinking Black label geez i still remember that day there was what is called Qute at my other home in MP and we drank about 3 cases. I have been a fan of Amstel though ever since I tasted the green bottle besides I drink Peroni,Heineken,Marzen Gold.
Tse di bothito i just me some KWV with Lemonade, Johnie Walker Black with Apple Tiser, Jack Daniel with Apple tiser or anything as long as i can taste Jack LOL. BTW Southern Comfort and Apple Tiser is outta this world...so sweet more than a pigs orgasm.

Oh I love my alcohol, started ngeHunter Dry, didn't like the taste so for three years I didn't touch isiphuzo. When I decided to try again, Jack Daniels was in at that time phela siphuza ngefashion, then it was Hennesy-cognac, then Savannah ngestraw make no mistake, then JC, then ABAZALA gosh thinking about it ngiyisdakwa ha ha ha, right now i am enjoying the new spirit cooler VATER ...it's smooth but nophuza face for me ngisaFRESH la la la

So now here I am mixing Amstel and sprite (try i!)> this is exactly what i did when i wanted to start drinking beer, now ngiyishaya injalo, no dilution for me thanks. Four mzalas, ungasakhulumi Tox, i could go on and on, as long as ingaphelanga i dont stop. Another nice way of drinking whisky, for coffee drinker, add a tot or two to your coffee, Lord!!!!! try it in the morning before you go to work. I hate ciders!!! dont know why coz at some stage i used be a Redds lover.

I also started by seeing my uncles drink beer, and hated the smell so much, that I knew I'd never go there. But come high school, pressures come, and all of a sudden, hunter's dry was the thing! That was my first drink. And then the brutal fruits, baccardis, and all these ciders
At varsity, the more you drank, the easier and more fun life was! That's when I was introduces to Four Cousins, in 2003!
When I started working, I made a conscious decision to only consume alchohol that tastes good. Ciders started to taste too sweet, and they filled my stomach after just two bottles. Beers were too bitter for me, so, Enter Savannah Dry...my goodness, I have found my love.
As for the Phuza face, I don't know when or how that settles in. But I do think that one has to limit themselves. Personally, I dont drink more that 6 Savannah's in one drinking binge, and I always have water after 2 savannahs.
Ok, let me answer your questions to summarize:
So, what’s your relationship with alcohol? - I'd like to think we don't have a relationship...LOL! But ya, like i said,me and savannah, and the odd cocktail now and again
What did u start out drinking and what have you graduated to? My earliest memory was of drinking hunter's dry, but now that i think about it, hunter's dry seems like such a "hard" drink to start with...LOL. But what can I say. I've since graduated to Savannah Dry. And I'm looking for suggestions for a nice wine. Not as sweet as Rose(Think four cousins), and not as bitter as Dry. Anyone?

Great article for a Friday Tox. I guess i have a sweet tooth because i love my drinks sweet, your amarulas, JC LeRoux, Cape Velvet cream. I started with strawberry esprit but i've since graduated to wines now. I unwind with a glass of Shiraz (with a dash of coke for that sweetish effect).

Ah, give me wine, wine, wine and some more wine. I can't get beer over my lips,... don't like the taste, and I hate the smell.
I have done my best work (writing reports and proposals) with a glass of wine in my hand,.. granted the next morning I usually have to re-check facts, but because of wine I yet have to write semester reports that are duplicates of each other.
And I do not have a drinking problem,... it is like my thing with caffeine,... just vice,s... only vices!

I LOVE alcohol, I used to love drinking ciders but the babaalaas just aint good for me. Wine just finishes me, so I stick to Johnny and we have been walking together in the black. And Red Bull comes along when we walk long distances.

That was shocking! Agree with you on this Lunksta. It was bad to see what people do when they're drunk. That's why you'll never see me at a club, pub or spot, cos people pick up fights with you and there's a huge chance of you getting hit by a stray bottle or something ....ndiligwala like that (am coward)
I'm an occassional drinker. I didnt like what i saw when i was young when people are under the influence. I pace myself - i never get drunk or get babalaz. if i start feeling my head spinning then i stop and drink water.
But my occassional drinks are white wine (any wine) and Smirnoff, either Storm or whatever Smirnoff cider there is.

haaibo, shlobo, njani??? ndayeka, kaloku.. But i used to be quite hotttt in my days...... My first drink was Bellingam Johannesburger... gawwddd.. It felt good... I started seeing my father's face all over the place.... Then I moved on to The Saints.... St Anna, St Bernice.. St Celine... and all of them....
Then I was introduced to Ciders and my first and only love was Hunters....Hunters Hard Lemon was the order of my day...more devine than Hunters Export...and the thing i used to like about Hunters was that, ayifane neSavannah...iSavannah makes you constipated .... whereas Hunters lives on the Coke side of life.. iyabodlisa... and ayinababalaza...
Ohh...Malome Jack....he goes with anything.... from lime to rooibos to ON THE ROCKS.... a weekend is not done until you have THE OLD No7.... gawwddd...
Have to say.. now.. this has just take me straight back to the olden days... Student days... when we used to stay drink from Thursday to Sunday night....

I started in high school with Crossbow Cider or something like that. Then i went to varsity and i got saved (yes the kinky 1 was once a bible basher, praying at street corners on Friday nyts when ppl went clubbing!!) so i didn't touch booze for a few yrs. Then i started working, u know the open bars on Fridays at work mos! Then umzalwane fell from grace! I discovered Savannah and i never looked back! Now and again i try a new drink but nothing and i mean nothing beats The Dry One- Savannah! Yes ma blokkers i'm a member of the Savannah Club and i have my mkhabanyana as proof!

For real, and I also noticed that the cousins only really became popular in 2006, and by then, it was too sweet for me...lol, i'm such a drunkard, but no one should dare say that to me!

Shoo! nice article Tox! My cousins introduced me to Alchohol, back in the days, i experimented with Crossbow cider and hunters gold, actually they didnt introduce me, i just took the cans and poured the little bit that's left in a glass. I would go home smelling like isht them my mum would bleksem me like hell, after 3 occassions my mum decided that she will not take me to my cousins ever again
In tertiary i started going to parties and clubs every weekend. i would feel it in my blood that it's friday, my body needed a drink!!! ya, those were the days!!My old time favourites were, spiced gold, brutal fruit, sminoff spin, basically all the ciders.
I guess i have grown out of my love for parties, clubs and drinking,now i just sit with 1 bottle of JC in my fridge for the whole week. (well used to)

Renegade...Try a Strawberry Decry or a Cosmopolitan and whenever you're in Cape Town make sure to pop in at Gallery Cafe in Long Street and order their Dutchboy Coctail, imnandi shem, it has that minty taste of Jack with a hint or two of Spicedgold and some other rum, completed with a slight tangy yet sweetish Redbull taste , hayi shem itsho kanye emanxebeni ....

Oh and my favourite cocktail is New Cafe's Faithful Bitch. Its R33 a glass (price of 6 pack Savannh!!) but 2 or 3 of those will make u feel like u can conquer Mount Everest!
I try and stay away from wine coz it makes me soooooo horny! Unless that is my intention anyway!

Then i went to varsity and i got saved (yes the kinky 1 was once a bible basher, praying at street corners on Friday nyts when ppl went clubbing!!) so i didn't touch booze for a few yrs. Then i started working, u know the open bars on Fridays at work mos! Then umzalwane fell from grace! I discovered Savannah and i never looked back! Now and again i try a new drink but nothing and i mean nothing beats The Dry One- Savannah! Yes ma blokkers i'm a member of the Savannah Club and i have my mkhabanyana as proof!

My fav. stash when i'm partying the entire night away is Vodka and Redbull, that mix keeps me up and i don't quite get drunk ncam........
I'll never be able to drink beer (Amstel, Heineken...etc..) the smells kills me....i'm glad tho'.........
I hate Brutal Fruit, its sweet.....i'm not big on ciders since i can't find Barcadi Breezer, will try Vawter tonight maybe.......otherwise i like some J&B or Black Label, mind you i don't drink every weekend, like maybe once a month or once in 2 months (I'm one of those plp who believe i don't need liquor all the time to have a good time).
I like to have one glass of wine with my meal once in a while (when i decide to cook up a storm), it keeps me full and i end up eating very little.
You see I have a good relationship with ma liquor, i won't be writing no "Dear Alcohol, We need to talk...." letters at any time soon............
When you bored on a friday, try pizza and red wine with ur man, it keeps the conversation flowing and nice for bonding........

Strawberry Daquiri Carino
Ingredients
8 ice cubes
½ lb (225 g) strawberries, hulled
3 tbsp (45 ml) granulated sugar
6 jiggers (280 ml) white rum
juice of 2 limes or 1 lemon
Procedure
Crush ice and place in well-chilled glasses.
Blend all remaining ingredients and pour over crushed ice.
Serve immediately.

Not really clued up when it comes to alcohol but i do drink the basic stuff, Amarula; JD& Coke ne savannah.
Its really painful for me to spend money on alcohol i just think of all the girly things i can get ngalomali. I am the type that drinks a lot at work functions and now and again with friends on a gazaat basis. I also do the St Claire; St Raphael range from shoprite yeR20.

We left and never spoke with her again but she intro'd me to ALC. To this day, I have no idea why I hung around this chic, she was mean and just plain stupid and she hated school! She got preggies in Std 7 (last year of middle school), got married to a Mzet and now has 5 children and is a staunch ZCC member. And yesssess, she’s only 31!!
In high school, I met these gals of mine that I still meet once a month and we tried Mellowwood - uuuuurgh!! - with coke. then we discovered Hunter's Gold... shoo! we got hooked to ciders...
In Tech, I discovered Barcadi Breezer Pineapple because SAB stopped making Hunter's Gold and that's when the real mathata started... Got REALLY hooked and drank this until I discovered cocktails in Pitoli... I tried some Hunters dry but that is a laxative, Tatoo (what happened to this one?), Brutal fruit, Sminnorff spin, Sminnorff storm (takes my voice away so the next day I can’t talk. Nx!)
NOW, I drink alcohol... I still love my Barcadi Breezer, Savannah Lite and Pangalactic Gargle blaster from News cafe. Will not try or drink beer... I drink wine when there’s nothing else to drink..

My experience with alcohol was a very short one.......... i started by Redds and then by the time my friends were excited by Sminoff Storm i was preggie and thanks to my lovely son my relationship with alcohol ended (by the way he is 3 yrs old) so i've been sober for almost 4 yrs.......... *is this an AA meeting*

I think the last time i drank 3 ciders it was 2005 then i was introduced to 4 cousins of course the sweet one (Rose). I never try these whiskies (not the cats food). But what i can tell u this year sendisela i think kayi two & it was only 2 glasses of sweet wine & the 2nd time i tried cocktail 4 the first time & i didnt like it. Its juice all the way guys whether its long & short journey. Mna i cant tell u why i drink bcoz i dont enjoy drinking i just drink qha. But i talked 2 my freinds that i just want 2 c myself drunk & next week its my pay day so i will tell u on Monday ukuthi what happened hehehe & dont worry we will drink kotlong sizoba-safe

I'm glad I'm about to go home in 2 hours time, then I'll have my me time and my alcohol.

Sjura J&B is nice with lemonade neh......yha That Long Island is expensive but it lasts and does the trick, but yhoo hayi it toxic, vodka , gin, tequila and rum in one glass CABANGA!!!!

I looove alcohol, but re thlalane when i fell pregnant in 2006. I started with Ciders(obviously!!) Hunter's dry was in that was in 99/2000 fesy=tive season, waitse ne re le millenium(sp) crazy ka nako eo. Then was introduced to Bernini Dry- ya mmfa blackout- that was the end of our relations.Anybody remember Gin Zing? That cider which tasted like Lemon Twist with Vodka. I loooooved it.
It just dissappeared. Then ther was a gemmer cider( ke lebetse leina). You only needed 2 bottles then o sloshed.
i then graduated to Hot stuff- ooohhhhh baby, i swear by Absolut vodka, lime + lemonade, this is still my preffered poison of choice if im not babysitting( joys of motherhood)
Not as sweet as Rose(Think four cousins), and not as bitter as Dry. Anyone? i reccomend Nederburg Pinotage...lovely.

I started to taste alcohol from my Uncle's Lion Larger, he would say "take a sip mtshana this will kill ur worms"...
Then one day one of my freinds, gave me a tod of Alaska to taste, only 2 find out that it tasted like Panado (medicine), I was 16, and all of my freinds were drinking.
From then we would drink Hunters Dry, Brandy & Whisky, but I decided to quit Brandy & Whisky bcoz their Babalaz is too much for me.....

I started in my primary school days with CROWN and then came HIGh School there was espirit, Brutal fruit, solantis, e.t.c.I went to tertiary there was SPIN..at the end of my 1st year STORM was made, and i havent looked anywhere since then..I do drink Savanna at times but STORM is my best followed by Red square energiser!!
