Frankly Speaking, Nothing and no one is above scrutiny
Race Relations 101: Muvhango & Generations
Local soapies targeted at black people have been under scrutiny in the past year with the media accusing Generations and Muvhango of being racists for not having white actors on their shows.

muvhango logo

Though it is clear Muvhango is a Venda-based drama deeply rooted in African traditions, customs and values and how they at times are at conflict with western lifestyle, still, the public somehow expect that the soapie feature some white people. This made me wonder how the show was gonna fit in whites in their storylines seeing that even board members at the show’s hub which is Mukwevho Holdings are only black. I wondered if whites have no business interest at the conglomerate.

Generations logo

On the other hand, Generations is concerned with the rich and the famous and how they fabulously live their extravagant lifestyles and somehow trying unconvincingly to accommodate other facets of the entertainment industry such as music, news and marketing, among other things. The central business district of the show is two companies which are Ezweni Communications and Mamela Media (or whatever the name). Generations does have a few whites as extras but still there is a cry by the public that whites needed be an integral part of the storyline.

generations

In the wake of the racism criticism, it appears the two soapies went back to the drawing board and drew strategies of bringing whites to also be part of the blacks on screen because it is blacks who were crying out foul on the shows’ alleged racism.

Muvhango

I understand race is still a thorny issue in South Africa but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t discuss race relations and racism that we may be possibly noticing on our TV screens.

Gen

In a bid to please the public and let racism cries die down, Generations brought in a PA. I was like, ohk!? But did really this PA have to be white? I mean a black person could have played that role. There was no fundamental necessity that required the role to be played by a white. I would have preferred the show to inject some white blood on screen in a convincing way and a manner that makes it necessary to have a white PA. Is that a major failure I see right there?

Generations Sonia

Some may dismiss the so called racism perception saying both Generations and Muvhango have whites working behind the scenes. But in reality, the general public doesn’t know that. We still have millions of people who are part of the 7 million and 4 million that watch Generations and Muvhango respectively who still don’t know the shows are filmed from 7:00 to 19:00 and that there are over 100 people working rather hard just to entertain them for just over 20 minutes each week night.

Pearl and new family

On the other hand, we all know Muvhango actress Jo-Anne Reynecke has a white father and the actress now has a fictitious white father on the show. It aint rocket science that this came under the wake of racism reports that we have seen in the media. I just want to commend Muvhango for introducing whites on the show in manner that makes it necessary for the characters to be white. Kaloku we know in reality and in fiction, it is kind of mandatory for Pearl to have a white father. Now there are at least four whites on the show including Pearl’s father who just died.

JoAnne Reynecke

What I like about the storyline is that it gave Jo-Anne a chance to feature as a lead. This way, the show is also giving young actresses a chance to shine as opposed to them being glorified supporting casts with no significance or a mere humorous storyline. Also, with this storyline, the soapie isn’t shying away from the racism that still exists in our small towns and big cities as we have just seen Pearl’s uncle disapproving of Pearl being part of her newfound white family.

Akhona

It seems Generations never learns. This time I will not recommend they learn from best soapie Isidingo but learn from Muvhango of all soapies. Some ideas for Genewhatwhat: Have a solid character description for the white PA, what’s her name again? Tjo, it now shows I watch the show on intervals. Anyway, bring on white people on the show in a more clever way than just dropping a white face on our screens.

isidingo cast

On the other hand, soapies like Rhythm City, Isidingo and Scandal! are cosmopolitan soapies which capture the essence of what South Africa aims to achieve in terms of doing away with racism. Soapies have a great part to play in building a non-racial South Africa and we are happy that Muvhango and yeah yeah, Generations, are coming to the party.

7de laan soapie

Yazi someone is really thinking this opinion piece is unwarranted. But I would like you to ask yourself this: If 7de Laan didn’t have black and coloured people on the show, can you really begin to imagine the political interference by the majority party and the general public’s racism outcry? I am not sure whether 7de Laan having a significant numbers of blacks on screen is a way of silencing racism politics.

Muvhango 2

Essentially, I think in order for Generations and Muvhango to do away with racism allegations by the public and the media, they just have to become cosmopolitan soapies like bo Rhythm City and Isidingo while still maintaining their identity. Phela times are changing ge e le ga gona bjale. We are in 2012 for crying out loud bandla! Or kanjani?

On my view on introducing them Mlungus on the show. Mo storyline sa Memela or whatever her name is they should have brought in a white family in a form of a joint venture le Mashaba for BBBEE what what. Then ba starte their own family le PA ya lekgowa. Then ngwana wa Lekgowa Du Toit a jole le Sbu and they will have coloureds kids wa bona then we are all happy with our rainbow nation.

How about a white makoti in Thathe for Mulimisi or that guy who's now the mayor.

In Generations there's also that white doctor but she's not a regular. Interesting cos come to think of it in the past Gen had oSarah Lee, Baba, Devan , Faye Peters etc it had representatives from all races and then an exodus happened and they haven't bothered with having a mix of race in their characters.

Phenyo shud have been coloured a product of Jabulani and his white makhwapheni

You forgot the Sibeko guy on Isidingo who's dating the white girl, who's kinda poor, yet the black guy is rich. It's also interesting that blacks never date whites on 7de Laan. David on Rhythm City has dated blacks and other characters. Generations honestly never succeeds at anything, y'all remember Katja? Anne was the only significant one. Muvhango is trying shem, remember the white detective who had a crush on Meme.

7de Laan also only ever has a maximum of 2 black characters. The minute one surfaces an old one disappears.
Reply from: Bedi Wednesday, April 25, 2012 12:49 PM
Generations really needs more races, introduce a white, mixed or asian family.luk at isidingo there are whites headlined by the haines(barker, kim),the le roux(cherel, ben, daniel) ,coloured(frank and calvin),indian (prada, rajesh and priya) and yes blacks the matabanes and the sibekos.thats wat i cal a soap

Yazi mna i thought Generations was meant to cater for Xhosa/Zulu speaking since SABC 1 seems 2 b specializing in those languages.

Muvhango = Venda/Sotho/Tswana etc coz they also specialize in those Lingos, and then 7deLaan for afrikaans

then Isidingo = English as there's a lot of english is SABC 3

and then Rythm City = Kasi, u all know mos how eTV rolls.

Those were my thots n opinions shame

The only whites who lasted for some time on Genrubbish was Stoffel, Baba and Sara-Lee, Paul Buckby (who is on Isidingo now). They had some coloureds in the form of Faye Peters, Glen Majozi, that orphan named Lindiwe, and the Indian guy  Max

I don't know what happened after them...Katja was boring, it seems like they were just clueless on what to do with her character.

Ok, I am not sure what you guys mean by being neutral in this article, I am examining what happens on Generations and Muvhango. I don't know if calling a show by its popular nickname equates to being un-neutral. In my opinion, this write up is neutral and I can only speak my mind the best way I know how. I cannot be any other writer, I can only be me.

Le teng, an opinion cannot always be neutral as it is guided by one's personal beliefs, likes and dislikes. This is not to say I don't like Generations, I just not watching as regularly as I used to.

Guys come on now, give yourselves a break and but each other a kit kat.

Nice read skeem...at some point on Generations i thought someone was on a mission to get rid all non-black actors cause i remember they had a mixed cast, blacks, coloureds and indians were there...and they left one-by-one.

Since Anne Devilliers they havent really had any white actor! Are  they racist? i doubt, I think it might just be a matter of writers not being able to pen storylines on white people, lots of research goes into storylining, and if you introduce an indian character, you damn sure must go out there and find out what Indians do and i doubt writers in Generations are as diverse as Isidingo and other shows, hence their daily 20:00 yawnfest!!!

I dont watch Muvhango, so i cant comment about it I watch Genewhatwhat because there isnt really nothing to watch, or maybe its culture! lol

WHAT YOU LEFT OUT CONVENIENTLY mAKISTO IN YOUR ARTICLE OR MAYBE A LACK OF KNOWLEDGE FROM YOUR SIDE. Generations has a mandate from SABC to promote African languages and you can go and confirm this with SABC. SABC IS ALSO UNDER PRESSURE FROM icasa WHO IS A BODY REPORTING TO GOVERNMENT, they have to meet a percentage of South African languages excluding English, if you remember Mfundi had white characters before. Why not now? He's not racist. It's a case of balance. You put one character, just one who speaks English, the percentage goes down, drastically. He has to answer to the SABC which has to answer to ICASA the body has to answer to government. They are not stupid not to want white characters as your article suggests. This is the problem most of the time I have with your articles, you don't get to the real reasons you go personal because you have a hatred of the show. If you had researched you would know this. So, go and blame SABC, Mfundi is just a producer assigned to do a job, to fulfil a mandate. To add to that, before you ask about other shows doing it. Muvhango doesn't have the pressure as much as Generations, it's a case of hitting hard the leading horse. They put more pressure on Generations than other shows. Isidingo is on SABC 3 which is meant for a different audience, mostly white and Rhythm City or Scandal are on eTV which the government does not give much pressure to. Read ICASA's mandates and SABC's and see what it says, writers of Generations are not stupid, they have so many pressures put on them because they are on SABC 1. And this is a fact
Reply from: biggiesmalls Wednesday, April 25, 2012 13:53 PM
Impondokazi you are right, SABC had structured their programming like that and like I say, the language promotion thing that government is pushing also pressures on Generations. Mfundi can't help it that his show is number one and government likes to make it an example. You all know, even at school when you are the clever child, every attention will be brought upon you, even if it turns out to be detrimental or not suitable for you. All I'm saying if Mfundi was racist why did he start his show with mixed cast before. Makisto should've researched before writing an uninformed article. These are bigger issues in the country taht will be on going for quite some time, it's not Generations fault. Makisto's hatred of the show blinds him...

I would love to see a white family as well, may be brother n sister.

I have always noticed that if speak to my white colleagues about Gen they dont know what i am referring to, but they know Isid n 7 de Laan.

I was also wondering why since the likes of Baba, Stoffie, Viv, Randy and Sonny left, there are no Indians, whites, coloureds but jus them blacks.

I agree 110% with those who say Generations is clueless on what to do with their characters like the story line right now ......the only interesting thing is Queen and Lungile's r/ship.

The whole point of Choppa and Matt coming back left me dumbfounded like had they run out of something to do with Mam Ruby or what. Get Dineo pregnant and let Mam Ruby go and be a gogo there and stop this nonsense toy boy story.

Khaphela and Khethiwe u can fire them I wudn't miss them cos they are just floating nje

The whole soapie is just all over right now akuqedakali what they are trying to do

uDineo they are maintaining her position as the lil tramp why cant she just find a guy kahle and not be trophy wife / uphunyuka bamphethe namadoda

@Biggiesmalls, I'm not sure I buy your argument. As a free to air channel, etv has the exactly the same mandate from ICASA when it comes to language quotas and yet their shows manage to include characters who speak other  languages. Perhaps it's the case that SABC1 as a channel just isn't as interested in non-nguni speaking audiences as etv is.
Reply from: makisto Wednesday, April 25, 2012 15:29 PM
What Biggiesmalls wrote, I have read somewhere.
It is so convinnient that after the very exact comment by Biggie had to be posted on this article after the 3rd Degree I received on my Facebook wall by my script writer friend.

Anyway, I am not sure if Biggie copied his comment on my Facebook wall from my friend if that is so, he could have noticed tha I said to my friend the government should also look into race matters when they look into languages and all that.

For the record, I do not hate Generations. I think one blogger said this article's meaning shouldn't be derailed by the Generations mediocrity.

I am of the opinion that Afrikaans is also a vernecular and mina ke I was happy to see Muvhango speak Afrikaans.

Yes, etv shows are not governed by the ruling party. For me, what a gov does has to have an impact on the poor and uplifting their lives not necessarily with handouts but by instilling values such as teaching about non-racialism.

As for Biggie's anger, *BBMTalk2TheHandEmoticon* shem. I do not have time for attention-seeking drama queens.

Rather write another article and show me how research is done by writing a perfect article. Yazi eintlike mense need to learn that the first thing about writing is putting paragraph breaks. That little "I am Debora Patta" 3rd Degree without paragraphs isn't reader friendly.

As for your problem with my writing, I am under the impression that TVSA has a lot of articles that one can choose from. I appreciate that you take your time to read my articles. However, unwarranted and possibly PR damage control stunts by Generations employees can be spotted miles away.

This is the problem most of the time I have with your articles, you don't get to the real reasons you go personal because you have a hatred of the show.
I don't remember the last time I wrote an article on Genewhatwhat. I insist that this article does get to the real reasons and for me in this case, racism is the real reason. Shouldn't the government be encouraging Generations to reflect our rainbow nation if that is the only show they have to use to achieve whatever goals?

At least show me three examples from the article that are getting personal with Generations. At least show me one sentence that dipicts my hatred for Generations.

The fact that Generations is the most watched show doesn't make it immune from scrutiny. Frankly Speaking, nothing and no one is above scrutiny. In scientific studies, there is a major difference between quality and quantity.

This article isn't about attacking Generations, it is about the pereceived racism as we have seen in the past couple of months on what has been reported in the media and since the shows seem to be coming to the party, surely this warrants some reflection on the criticism the shows have received and how they are now trying to address that. Having said that, I do not believe I do not have to write an opinion piece to scrutinise how the shows are now bringing white people into their stories

Do I hate Generations? NO. Is Generations the best show in SA? In my opinion, a resounding NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! Do they have good writers, NOOOOO.

Having said that, I am not sure what Biggie's tantrums are gonna achieve.

As bloggers were saying, Generations used to have all four races of our country on the show....
Reply from: Impondokazi Wednesday, April 25, 2012 15:39 PM
SABC had structured their programming like that

SABC 1 = Zulu/Xhosa news. That's where we find Xhosa/Zulu shows the most

SABC 2 = Afrikaans/Sotho/Tswana news. That's where we find Afrikaans/Sotho/Tswana shows the most

SABC 3 = English news. That's where we find English shows the most.

So all in all SABC caters for all S.A languages, using it's 3 diff stations. They don't have to use 1 show e.g Generations  or 1 station e.g SABC1 to accommodate all languages

Yes eTV might have the same Mandate but There's only 1 eTV, No eTV 1, 2,  3 etc hence the mix masala of all languages in 1 station.

NB: My analysis of this whole situation, plz don't shoot.

#let's go Bomyy, i need more Kit Kat#

Makisto u do not like Generations, you can deny that with literal words, but the rest of your other words say something different... well not that it is any of my problem, i like generations... and if i head biggies kakuhle she was trying to state what the generations crew is facing, It is what they are told by the government. If there is anyone you should throw your genewatwat hatred then it has to be the government. Your sugfestion from the beginning about How generations should introduce white folks in the soap were rellevant and I was enjoying, u were sounding like someone who really wanted something good for the soapi, but out of the blue you called it genewatwat and just started hating on it...

Makisto you are not getting what I'm saying you are getting emotional as usual, I said they have a mandate, you need to attack the SABC or ICASA or Government and question them... Your article, you even say Genwhatwhat, insinuating hatred of the show, it is clearly biased and attack them on something they have no control of. That is what I'm saying if your article is informed enough you would see it's not the producers or writers but what they are required to do.

And your examples of Isidingo and RC are out because they have a different mandate, that's what I am saying. Compare apples with apples. Isidingo has less vernacular because the channel doesn't put pressure on them. It's not the stupidity of Gen writers or the fact that they can't write stories for white people like you said. That is a hate comment right there but you deny it. If you are given a tender to build a street you are not going to go and buid a stadium... That's what I'm saying. The day SABC lessen their restrictions on them, surely they will have white characters. Mfundi had white characters before, why would he not want them all of a sudden... Stop being emotional and face facts...

In Vandi's cybervoise 'Oowaiii'...I'm sho bo mlungus don't give a damn. They have shows that they relate to on sabc, in full afrikaans, and a dash of english...something tells me that the character of katjia (sp) wouldn't have interested white people just cause she is white, perhaps its belond black and white characters, its about the storylines. Equaly ko mujango, the storyline of a white man abandoning his black child because of APARTHEID is probably not appealing to bo mlungus. So, I don't think they are bothered, don't think they care, PLUS...I also agree with @Biggiesmalls and mpodokazi.

Lol!!! The Genewhatwhat-ians are not impressed. All 7 million of them. Kwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!! The soapie sucks big time they must just accept it and move on. Miss the days of Archie, Priscilla le boNtsiki when Genewhatwhat was still a great show. eish but now... NOOOOO!!! I have this gr8 storyline to save Genewhatwhat... A serial killer who will kill all of the characters one by one while the SABC fires the producers, writers n directors behind the scenes. The show needs new blood from new execs right down to new make up people. Have u seen how every single character, rich or poor, has manicured nails, perfect eyebrows n expensive clothes? Let's not even get started on that flat in Newtown that is occupied by Managing Directors and Ad execs. I mean seriously. All this in Newtown right next to Bree. Hahahahahahaha!

The Generarubbish cast & crew may be number 1 in the ratings but they are number last in everything else; the storylineS, the make up, the costume design (Dinny's hair). I always see it in passing really. What I don't underStand about the MANDATE is, y do the actors speak EngliSh then???? Or is it that they don't want white people speaking EngliSh. If So then the MANDATE should be challenged as contravening the freedom charter.

Number1 I have the same question for biggiesmalls! e.g Ruby is a sowetan shebeen queen, so why akhuluma isingisi?. And Biggy u could swear usebenza ku Generubish. Do they also have a mandate to bore us to death as well? The fact of the matter is Generations is not racially balanced. No amount of emotion or neutral writing will change the facts. And when did this article change from racial issues to generations issues? Yidlani I kit kat maan and give Makisto a Bells!

Without referring to subjects I know nothing about ... Telly shows ... the race issue is a rather tricky one. We all have our identities and cultures to protect and perpetuate, however, it is equally dangerous to foment division and possible stereotyping along racial lines. I am completely a-racial until someone forces their opinion of race & sociological classification on me ... at which point I turn ... and become adamantly Zulu without the need to be defensive about my identity, I will enforce & reinforce my identity. My observation of these shows is that some of them attempt to dillute and otherwise obviate the issue of race, very unsuccessfuly I may add and systematically replace them with a flavour of Americanism, which I find difficult to digest. My opinion is the fact that these shows attempt to capture the "winning formula" as prescribed by American media and then try to infuse in the storyline, an american flavour. Which fails me, but works for the general public as seen by the viewership data. I'd prefer to keep some thing generic & true to our identity than to infuse some factors I cannot identify with as a vernacular cultural.

Isn't TVSA refreshing again without the annoying hate articles?

@Aphrodisiac....i only noticed Akhona's mom in prison her nails were done, hey.

Guys, while we busy attacking each other, Mfundi n crew and the Gov who gives mandates are not even concerned. Lets hear what Maki is saying,

Wena Maki, i know that you dont hate Gen but the story lines. I love Gen to bits such that when my hubby changes channel to SS4, i get very angry, but the stories are not interesting.

Muvhango i always forgave them for not having Whites coz the story lines focuses on Venda issues n culture, so its not too obvious.

But ke Gen yona, Ezweni n Memela (Mashaba) would not by chance employ a white worker, they are meant to be big media companies. Which would make sense to have 1 or 2 advertising execs.

and if u watch generations you would see that it is currently on fire! if you can not see that then i have nothing more to say to you except that please do what you do best, hate! amen *taking a bite on my kit kat*

hay bantu Biggie ddnt say she came up with that info by herself, she admitted she got it from the internet hay hay

the sudden turn from RACE to GENERATION'S FAILURE TO IMPRESS amazes me, m so tempted to say something but i left my bullet proof at home, so i won't take the risk.

What i also fail to understand is why so much pressure on Generations to accommodate all races n languages when News *the most important, i believe* is in Xhosa n Zulu bt no pressure on them

If u people fail to understand that SABC accommodates different cultures, races  n languages using their 3 different stations then i also give up. Have u ever seen a Sotho n i mean 100% Sotho show in SABC 1? or a Xhosa show on SABC 3? Have u seen a story line focusing 100% on Xhosa culture in 7deLaan?

I don't think when a show is meant to accommodate a certain language, promote that certain race n it's cultures, that means the other people who are interested must not understand it at all hence the English subtitles. People on generations speak their languages but they mix English like u all do nowadays. Khethiwe's gogo was there n i never heard her speak English coz she is not educated.

I so wish u all people would spare us the "Mfundi failure" talk n focus on the Race issue Makisto was trying to bring up. We all know how bad, boring n poor quality Generations is, we are interested in the Main Focus of this Article.

"Mfundi failure" KWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Well the main focus of this article IS failure. Failure to accommodate other races. GeneFAILtions stans must calm down hle. For a show that attracts almost the whole of the TV population, its viewers are very emotional.

LOL...*a good chuckle from an exhausting thursday at work*...the problem is that those who like generations call those who don't watch it haters, and those who don't like it hate on it expecting it to be like this and that. Owaiii...its soapies, not worth the passionate tussle of opinions, now please bring on the the agony uncle ntoni ntonis so the differing opinions can be invested into life altering issues. @Taz, how do the entries go, I have an issue for which I need brutal bloggers council, do we inbox u? Go thoma neng? PS: I can't wait for all u need is love.

I actually read an article on Women24.com talking about racist soapies like Generations. This matter is a tough one because if blacks want roles in former white soapies then surely it must happen vice versa. Particularly in SA where we live as the so-called rainbow nation. My only issue will be the relevance...
