BET's pulling out the stops when it comes to opening up the industry by holding open auditions for the starring role of their upcoming Lebo Mathosa biographical TV series The Lebo Mathosa Story.

BET's Africa division and the Lebo Mathosa Foundation have teamed up to create a six-part miniseries about Lebo's iconic life and the search is on for two talented performers to play her at different ages of her life (see age requirements below).

Audition must-knows

The auditions are happening this Sunday, 31 March 2019, at Sky Rink Studios.

The address: 132 Main Street, Marshalltown, Johannesburg, 2107

Auditionees must be between the ages of 10 and 14 years old as well as 20 to 30 years old to audition for the younger and older Lebo.

Doors open at 08h00 and BET's encouraging auditionees to arrive early.

Who is BET looking for?

They want an ultimate entertainer: someone with a powerful voice, eye-catching dance moves and a sense of fashion that would make Lebo Mathosa proud.

What you need to know about the series

The Lebo Mathosa Story is a drama series that tells the story of how a young, shy and ambitious girl transformed herself into a power house in the music industry at the height of South Africa's social transition.

The series is based on the singer’s incredible life story and will take viewers on a journey to the 1990s at the beginning of the country's kwaito revolution when Lebo spiralled to fame as a lead member of the pioneering kwaito group, Boom Shaka.

She went on to pursue a solo career and became a household name. She was renowned for her unapologetic demeanour, her provocative dance moves, her edgy fashion sense, her sexual confidence and her trendy hairstyles.

Lebo climbed the charts with her music and won a number of the industry’s biggest awards. She also performed at some of South Africa's most historic events, including a memorable show at Nelson Mandela’s 85th birthday party.

In October 2006 she was killed in a car accident in Johannesburg after her driver lost control of the car. She was 29.

The series is being co-produced by Ochre Media and will air on BET in September 2019.
